WA:       Rachel Welles has walked out of Doctors Hospital, leaving the
protection of Dr. Michael Rossi, fearful she is about to be
returned to the custody of her guardian.  To Rachel any sight
of a policeman could mean the flight from her guardian is over.

Intro:    Late that night, Rachel sneaks over to the center of the square
          and hides under the bandstand.

Scene 1:  Two police officers meet up in the square and talk briefly.

bandstand.  When the police leave she comes back out.

Scene 2:  Next morning, from his General Store, next door to the Clarion,
Eli walks to the curb and waits for a Clover dairy truck to
pass. [good camera shot of the fire station].  He then goes on
over to the bandstand to feed the pigeons and finds Rachel
hiding.  Eli wishes Rachel "good morning" and asked how she
slept.  He speaks of old people feeding pigeons.  When the
police are gone, he tells her when it is all clear.  Eli pets a
large scraggy dog called Girl.  The owners left town
abandoning the dog.  People take turns feeding her.  Rachel
mentions Al Shafer and a dog named Rusty.  Eli and Rachel
head over to the General Store.  [If you ever need to hide from
the police, the writers would probably recommend a town square
just a few steps from the police station.]

Scene 3:  Steven has been putting in the living room and puts his putter
in the golf bag as the scene opens.  They talk further.  He is

client who likes to go sky diving.  Steven says he must leave
the house his mother paid for.  He can afford a house now.  He
doesn't want to owe his mother anything.  The chimes ring.

Rossi is admitted and says he understands that Steven is about
to leave to play golf.  Betty serves the doctor a cup of
coffee.  Rossi tells them that both of Rachel's parents are
dead.  Rossi tells Steven about the warning he got from Mrs.
Burrough's that Chandler will come to claim her.

Steven leaves with his golf bag and Rossi stays.  The two
chimes are seen on the wall by the front door as Dr. Rossi
          leaves and the scene ends.

Scene 4:  Walking with two canes, Martin comes in the livingroom and
warns Hannah about testifying.  She must stand strong, not
crumble, and not mention Catherine.  Peyton says that Hannah
may have driven Ann to her death.

Scene 5:  Eli and Rita go into the Eli's General Store.  Rachel has
cleaned up the store room in the back of the General Store.
Eli thanks her effusively.  Rita has fixed some bacon and fried
egg sandwiches and coffee for Rachel.  Rachel asks how Norman
is.  Rachel is worried about what Mrs. Burrows had told Dr.
Rossi.  Eli gives Rachel his handkerchief.

WA:       Since Allison Mackenzie has disappeared, there has been no
clue.  The police investigation has been reduced to routine.
But in the mind of Allison's father, Elliot Carson, every day
that passes without a trace of her builds a private agony.

Intro:    Two policemen come out of the side door of the Town hall, get
in a black and white patrol car, and drive off.

Scene 1:  Inside the courthouse, Elliot is talking to Steven.  Elliot

Lee had talked to Allison while out on bail.  This caused Lee
to have his bail revoked.  Steven says that Elliot is asking
him to handle his own client.  [Handle is legal argot or
jargon for manipulate.]  Steven insists that he will not
          compromise his client.

Scene 2:  Norman and Rodney drive up to the square in Rodney's light blue
convertible, and talk briefly before going into the General
Store.  Norman uses the word pop, referring to an orange soda
drink.  [Some areas of the country use the expression soda, or
soda pop.  They decide to go into Eli's General Store.]

Scene 3:  Norman and Rodney go into the General Store where Rachel is
hiding in the back room.  Norman opens two bottles of orange
soda which he has gotten out of the refrigerator.  Norman
mentions Mr. Jefferson who occasionally works for Chandler
as a handyman.  Rodney calls Jefferson, Chandler's handyman / foreman.
Rachel tries to hide but accidentally knocks a pan off the wall.
Norman sees her.  Rachel tries to run.  Rodney restrains and
manhandles her.  Rodney wants to know about Allison.  Rachel
breaks free and runs out of the store with Rodney in hot pursuit.
Rodney escorts Rachel into the Police Station.

Scene 4:  Inside the Police Station, Sgt. Edward Goddard talks on the
phone to a Mr. Jefferson, Chandler's erstwhile handyman.
Goddard tells Rachel there is no problem because Chandler will
be there in a couple of days.  Rachel breaks loose briefly and
runs into Lee Webber who grabs her.  Lee is being escorted back
to his cell by a policeman.  Rachel is now in the custody of
          the police.

Scene 5:  In Eli Carson's General Store, Norman is on the phone with the
hospital.  Leslie rudely interrupts to try to talk to Norman
about his returning to college.  They talk briefly and Leslie
leaves.  The hospital nurse finally tells Norman she can't find
Rossi.  Norman tells her to let Rossi know that Rachel is in
the police station.  Leslie says he's wasting his time and
          leaves.

Rita shows up, and Norman tells her about Rachel.  Norman tells
Rita that he had been to Hastings Valley to find out about
Rachel.  Rita has food for Rachel.

Scene 6:  On the wharf, Sandy meets up with Betty.  She compliments Betty
on her dress.  She asks if Betty is slumming.  Betty says that
she is admiring the quaint atmosphere, and that she is giving a
dinner party.  Betty asks her about her involvement with Rodney.
Betty asks Tommy Magnuson about keeping the lobsters over night.
He says it would be better to cook them right away and then warm
them up the next day.  Sandy says, "Bon appetite," and then leaves.

Scene 7:  Dr. Rossi bursts into Peyton's library upstairs, at the behest of
Hannah, and attempts to examine the old man.  Rossi tells Peyton
that he may check out.  Peyton asks what the doctor means.  Die.
Peyton refuses to be examined.  Rossi goes downstairs and talks
with Hannah.  He refers to her as his prospective mother-in-law.
He asks why she never spoke to him about Ann.  Martin comes down
the stairs as Rossi is leaving.  The workmen are hanging the
replacement portrait of Catherine Peyton Harrington.  Peyton asks
Hannah her opinion of the portrait.  The original portrait had
been done by Brian (Cord) Colby. You can slash this painting just
as you did the original.  I'll simply have another made.  And
another and another.  Martin says, "My daughter is back.  Nothing
          has changed."

Scene 8:  Elliot is working in the Clarion as Eli comes in to talk about
Rachel.  He says that the town has been treating her as a witch.
Eli tells Elliot that he had provided her sanctuary at the General
Store.  [Eli was never charged with harboring a fugitive].  Elliot
says, "That's a terrible choice to have to make.  But we have to make it."

Scene 9:  In the Carson house, the phone rings as Constance is coming
down the stairs.  It is a harassment phone call.  A girl talks
with Constance pretending to be Allison.  There is a boy sitting
by the girl.  The girl asks if that is her baby brother crying.
The girl hangs up.  Constance drops the phone.  Elliot comes in
          the front door.

Constance is disturbed and Elliot tries to comfort her.  Matthew
is heard crying.  Then Constance goes upstairs.  Elliot hangs up
the phone.  [There was never a follow up on this phone cameo.]

panel wagon and going in the side entrance of the police
station on the east side of the Town Hall.

Fowler relents and talks with Chandler.  The farmer wants to
see his niece, Rachel.  Chandler says he doesn't want to cause
any trouble. He further says that he is her only living
relative.  Fowler asks Marianne to get Dr. Rossi at the
hospital.  Using a pencil, she dials 6 digits on a rotary dial
          phone.

Scene 3:  In John Fowler's outer office, Chandler asks the secretary
where a barber shop would be.  She says, "Two blocks to the
          right, one to the left."

Scene 4:  Betty is talking with Steven as he prepares for the day.
Steven can't find his wristwatch.  He had left the watch on the
table by the couch.  Evidently he hadn't lusted after Betty the
          night before.

Scene 5:  Norman, wearing a suit, is waiting for Rodney, wearing a white
shirt and tie, as their father, Leslie, joins them.  Leslie

thinks the three Harrington men should make an appearance
          together.  They agree to go.

Scene 6:  In the Peyton mansion, Hannah is waiting.  She looks hatefully
at the portrait of Catherine.  One can only imagine what her

as to her knowledge of the death of Ann Howard.  Elsewhere in

different sort of witness stand by the man who calls himself
          her uncle, Jack Chandler.

Intro:    The limousine drives up and Peyton and Hannah get out and go
into the courthouse.  [A very brief shot of the building across
the street east from the Pharmacy is seen.  In the early part
of the series it was the Interstate Bus station and later on it
          was the PEYTON movie theater.]

Scene 1:  In a private room, Rachel tells Chandler that she is not coming
back to the farm with him, ever.  She threatens to tell the
police that she found Allison's bracelet on the floorboard of
          his car.

Scene 2:  As he is leaving the police station, Chandler speaks to Dr.
Rossi and tells him to thank Mr. Fowler.  Rossi tells the
officer to take Rachel back to the hospital.  The interested
townfolk file back into the courtroom.

Scene 3:  The court reconvenes.  Rossi, Rodney, Elliot, Fowler, and many
other citizens of Peyton Place are there.  The court clerk
calls the court to order.  Hannah identifies a photograph of
her daughter, Ann Howard.  [Ann Cord Colby Howard.]  Hannah
says that she gave away the girl to her father, Brian Cord.
She kept the son, Steven.  Hannah says that Ann was accused of
pushing Chris Webber off the bluff, at Sailors' Bluff.  The
next time she saw Ann was 28 years later, only a few months
ago.  Ann came to the Peyton door unannounced.  She had just
found out that Hannah was her mother.  Hannah asks Steven for a
moment to collect herself.  Judge Chester recesses the court
          for one hour.

Scene 4:  In the police station, Elliot talks with Sgt. Edward Goddard.

          anymore."

12-12-66

Steven learns of his true parentage.

WA:       Elliot Carson has taken advantage of the long court recess to
satisfy his curiosity about Jack Chandler.  He has questioned
Chandler's niece, Rachel Welles, and found her deliberately
vague and evasive.  But her attitude has only strengthened
Elliot's determination to learn all he can about the man who
seeks permanent custody of this frightened girl.

Intro:    Leaves on the ground.  Car drives up in front of the
courthouse.  Elliot gets out and goes up to the entrance.  He
watches as a Police car drives up and Rachel gets out and goes
in the courthouse.  Elliot follows her in.  This is possibly
the only good view of the north side of the bank building and
          Doctors Hospital.

Scene 1:  Constance is inside waiting.  Constance and Elliot talk briefly
with Rachel.  Rossi walks up and talks briefly with Rachel.
The police had brought Rachel back to the police station to be
interviewed by a Mrs. Franks, Child Protective Bureau agent.
Elliot and Constance talk with Rossi.  Constance asks Elliot if
Chandler may retain custody.  Rossi talks with Rachel.  Rossi
goes inside the courtroom and sits.  He turns around and sees
Rachel.  He gets up and takes her to the jail waiting area.

Scene 2:  Back in the courtroom, Lee is sitting at the defendant's table.
Steven continues to question Hannah Cord on the stand.  Peyton
interrupts the proceedings.  The Judge, Irwin A. Chester, tells
Ralph, the bailiff, to remove Mr. Peyton.  Ralph starts to
remove the old man, but the judge relents and lets Peyton stay.
Hannah says, "I would have been Mrs. Martin Peyton except for
Catherine."  [Hannah Cord's testimony monopolizes the majority
of this episode].  Steven ends the examination by saying,
          "Mrs. Cord, no--further--questions."

Episode 295.
12-14-66

WA:       Catherine Peyton Harrington.  Born 1918.  Died 1964.
Catherine's father, Martin Peyton, has rushed to the cemetary
as Hannah Cord completed her testimony in the Lee Webber
hearing.  Shocking testimony, that disclosed publicly that
Catherine was the mother of Steven Cord and Ann Howard.  And
that Martin Peyton spent the past 28 years of his life
          concealing this fact.

MEL:      Norman is at the cemetary because Catherine was his mother and
Ann Howard was his half-sister.  Martin is there because
Catherine was his daughter and Ann was his granddaughter.
Rossi is here because Ann was his fiancée and Catherine
          was Ann's mother.

Intro:    In the cemetary, Norman is standing at Catherine's grave.
After a while, Norman walks away.  Martin Peyton, a cane in his
right hand, flowers and a cane, in his left hand, walks to the
headstone of his daughter, Catherine Peyton Harrington.  The
Peyton family plot is enclosed by an iron fence.

Scene 1:  Rossi calls out rudely and walks up to Peyton.  He berates
Peyton concerning his daughter, Catherine, and his
grand-daughter, Ann Howard.  Rossi says he doubts if Peyton
knows the color of her eyes and if he ever heard her laugh.
Martin says her eyes were blue.  He never heard her laugh.
Rossi says that he had heard her laugh.  Peyton asks if Rossi
wants an apology.  He promises Rossi that Lee Webber will pay
for the murder of Ann.  [One of the many predictions in the
series few of which actually came true].  Peyton starts to
leave and almost collapses.  Rossi comes over and helps him
walk to the limousine.  The chauffeur is not shown in this
          scene.

Scene 2:  With piano music in the background at the Colonial Post Inn,
Leslie is drinking as Rodney walks up.  Rodney is concerned
about Norman, who is missing.  Rodney says that he checked with
Rita and Mrs. Carson.  Leslie asks if Rodney wants a drink.
Leslie tells Rodney to sit down, he is making him nervous.
Rodney sits at the table and says that he would like Leslie to
help search for Norman.  The waitress brings Leslie another
drink.  The hostess hands Rodney a menu.  Leslie explains why
he and Catherine had to get married.

Leslie says that he had to elope with Catherine because Peyton
had threatened to run him out of town if he came within 40
miles of his daughter.  He says that it is possible that he was
married by the same man as Norman and Rodney were when they
eloped.  The man looked like an undertaker.  [Not likely
because Rodney and Betty went to White River, Massachusetts and
Norman and Rita went across the state line to Owens Ridge,
state not specified.]  He wasn't good enough for Peyton's
daughter.  Catherine married Leslie to spite her father.
Catherine lived in the same house as Steven and ignored him.
Leslie talks about Rodney's legacy.  Leslie tells Rodney he
wants him to leave the Peyton house.  Leslie wants to throw the
bargain back in Peyton's teeth.  Leslie wants Rodney to leave
the mansion and go away with him.

Scene 3:  Betty is pacing in the courtroom.  She pounds the gavel and
tells Steven that she is hungry.  She is deliberately being a
pest.  He suggests she go to the inn (on the same block).
Steven says, he's not hungry.  She asks him to go watch her
eat.  Ralph, the bailiff, brings Steven some papers.  He
apologizes to Steven for keeping him waiting.  Betty continues
to annoy Steven.  She says they have an appointment to see the
          Tobin house.

Scene 4:  At the mansion, the chimes ring.  Mary greets and admits
Leslie.  He asks her to tell Peyton he is there.  She goes to
get Peyton.  Leslie goes in the livingroom and helps himself
to a drink.  He looks at the portrait of Catherine and takes a
drink.  Hannah comes in the front door.  Leslie greets her.
Leslie asks Hannah what she will do now.  She says that she
never received anything from Martin except her wages as
housekeeper.  Leslie accuses Hannah of possibly pushing that
poor unfortunate girl.  Leslie says that he expects Martin to
close down the house and return to Boston.  Martin comes down
and tells Leslie he intends to stay in Peyton Place.  He asks
Hannah to excuse them and leave Leslie and himself in private.
She leaves, apparently back out the front door.  Martin says
that he supposes Leslie has a great deal to say.  Leslie does.

Scene 5:  Rossi is in his office as Rachel knocks and comes in.  Rossi
apologizes for not bringing her back from the police station to
the hospital [a block and a half].  Rossi asks Rachel what
happened in the meeting with Chandler.  He wants to know what
Chandler said.  The meeting lasted over five minutes.  Rachel
tells him that Chandler wants her to come back to the farm.
She is his only living relative.  She told him that she would
run away if she had to go back with him.  She asks for
permission to go back to her room.  Rossi says no.  About then,
Constance knocks and comes in with Matthew.  She is here for
Matthew's checkup.  Wide eyed, Rachel asks if this is Matthew.
Constance and Rachel talk.  Rachel asks to hold Matthew and
Constance hands him to her.  Rachel says he is a fine baby.
Rachel talks about taking care of babies.  That she is good
          with babies.

Scene 6:  In the Clarion, Elliot is talking with Jerry, the composer.  He
says he just doesn't like it.  He wants more two column heads.
And more graphics.  Jerry says no problem and goes back in the
composing room.  Eddie, the postman, brings Elliot a package.
Eli comes in and greets Eddie.  Elliot is not in a hurry to
open the package.  Eli starts to grab the package when Elliot
grabs it.  The package is old newspapers from the state prison.
Elliot is looking for the name Jack Chandler.  Eli mentions the
rocky soil in Hastings Valley.  Elliot says that her aunt went
to visit a cousin in Charlestown, the state prison.  She came
back with Chandler who had only the clothes on his back.  Eli
says that Elliot is not a newspaper man.  He is a father and a
husband.  He looks at the prison paper headline:

deal.  Martin asks if Leslie would like to resign from the
management of the mill.  Leslie says he never felt comfortable

John for not removing Cord from the trial when he over stepped
the bounds.  But it would have been unfair to the defendant.
The decision is not to bind Lee Webber over for trial.  John
argues with the Judge.  He says that the judge has made a
serious mistake.  Judge Chester says that John can file for
another preliminary hearing.  Or wait for a grand jury.  The
judge says he deals in the law.  He also says that Cord doesn't
care about Lee Webber.  He asks how Cord was able to defend the
man who was accused of killing his own sister.  He says that
setting Lee Webber free may weigh on his conscience.
