Episode 319.

          Lee Webber is hired as chauffeur to Martin Peyton.

WA:       To Lee Webber, the house of Martin Peyton is an imposing symbol
          of power and wealth.  Under normal circumstances he would never
          see this house from the inside.  But tonight Lee has seized the
          opportunity to invade a world so long denied him.
           
Intro:    In the Peyton mansion, Mary walks down the stairs and admits
          Lee Webber.

Scene 1:  Peyton greets Lee Webber and asks what he wants.  Lee wants a
          job as chauffeur.  They talks about Lee's qualifications. 
          Peyton asks Lee to get his coat out of the foyer closet. 
          Steven Cord comes in from the living room and asks where Peyton
          is going.  They are going for a drive.  Peyton tells Steven to
          ask Betty to save him a piece of pie.

Scene 2:  In the kitchen, Constance is tending Matthew as Elliot comes
          in.  She is having trouble getting Matthew to eat his cereal. 
          Constance criticizes the way Elliot treated Rachel.
       
Scene 3:  In the apartment, Norman and Rita are putting sheets on the
          Hide-a-Bed® in the livingroom.  Rachel comes in wearing her
          nightie.  Rita tells her that if she needs anything, to just
          ask.  Rachel opens the shutters and looks out the window on the
          square.  She goes to bed.
         
Scene 4:  In the bedroom, Norman and Rita argue about Rachel.  Rita says
          that is the only friend of Rachel's age she has.  The door
          buzzer buzzes.  Norman goes to answer and lets Rossi in.  Rossi
          apologizes for barging in on them.  He has come to check on 
          Rita.  They talk about Rachel.  Rossi listens to Rita's heart. 
          He says everything is ok.  He has some medicines for her to
          take.  He wants her to come in to the office at 2:00 tomorrow. 
          Rossi asks Norman why Rachel left the Carsons.  He goes into
          the livingroom and talks with Rachel.  Rachel asks what is
          wrong with Rita.  He asks how she is.  Rossi says he would like
          to help.  She asks him not to talk to her like a child.  He
          says that Elliot is his friend.  He asks her why she left the
          Carsons.  She says that Elliot doesn't trust her.  She says she
          can't go back.  He tells her good-night and leaves.  She
          doesn't respond.
   
Scene 5:  Outside, Rossi walks down the stairs.  The Glover street sign
          is prominent.  He gets in his car and leaves.  Chandler is
          watching.
   
Scene 6:  View from top of the stairs.  Peyton comes in the front door. 
          Steven asks if he enjoyed the ride.  He asks if it was worth
          it.  Peyton says Lee is a good driver.  Steven says he doesn't
          want Webber in the house.  Steven insists.  Peyton says for a
          trial period, Webber will work for him.  Steven says they both
          know that Lee killed Ann Howard.   Peyton says, "I know that
          Webber killed my grand-daughter.  Now we'll have to make our
          own justice, won't we steven."
     
Scene 7:  In the General Store, Elliot and Eli argue about Rachel.  They
          drink coffee.  Eli says she is a poor, scared kid.  Eli
          compares her to Allison.  They argue.  Elliot leaves.
     
Scene 8:  On the street, Elliot meets up with Chandler.  Chandler says
          that he was on the way to the Clarion to tell him he liked the
          articles on the fishing industry.  Chandler says it is cold and
          he is headed to his boarding house.  Chandler tells Elliot to
          say goodnight to Rachel. 

Preview:  Betty talks to Steven.  Sandy talks with Lee.  Constance talks
          to Elliot.

Episode 320.     
03-20-67
         
          Lee Webber, chauffeur.

WA:       Tonight, Lee Webber was hired as a chauffeur by Martin Peyton,
          the grandfather of the girl he was accused of murdering. 
          Martin Peyton may have had other more devious reasons aside
          from Lee's skill as a driver and mechanic.  But Lee has no
          thought of this only he has gotten a job with a good paycheck
          and whatever future he can make of it.  Lee is in the mood to
          brag.  And the audience he craves is Sandy, the wife who has
          fled from him and filed suit for divorce.
   
MEL:      In episode 316, Peyton tells Steven and Betty that Thomas has
          tendered his resignation as chauffeur to get married.  Peyton
          asked Steven to place an ad in the Clarion for a replacement. 
          Betty volunteered to do it for him, but Steven wound up with
          the errand because Peyton wanted Betty to Boston with him.  In
          episode.

          In episode 317, Lee read the ad for chauffeur while in the
          Pharmacy.

          In episode 318, a manicured, cleaned-up Lee Webber, goes to the
          bar in the Colonial Post Inn and tells Chandler that he is
          going to get a job as chauffeur for Martin Peyton.  They make a
          $5.00 bet.  Bartender Frank is rude to Lee.

          In episode 319, Lee shows up at the mansion to interview with
          Peyton and is almost thrown out by Steven Cord.  Lee and Peyton
          go for a test drive.

          In episode 322, Lee drives the limousine over to the Shoreline
          garage to get gas and minor service.
     
Intro:    Lee walks along the wharf and walks into Ada Jacks Tavern.

Scene 1:  Steven comes into the tavern to talk with Ada.  Lee comes over
          and tells Ada that he is now Martin Peyton's chauffeur.  Ada
          inquires why Peyton hired him.  Lee asks for congratulations
          and receives them.  Ada says his time is up and he should
          leave. 
   
Scene 2:  Steven complains to Betty about what Peyton said to him
          regarding Lee Webber.  It was Stevens fault that Lee Webber
          went free.  Betty says that Steven will have to meet Peyton
          half way.
       
Scene 3:  Rita comes in the kitchen as Rachel is preparing breakfast. 
          Rita says that Norman is still asleep.  [Breakfast with a king,
          dine with a footman, and sup with a pup, per Rachel's Aunt
          Lucy.]  Norman comes in and sits at the table.  Rachel           
          says that she is planning on leaving the next day.
     
Scene 4:  Elliot is sitting at the breakfast table and Constance is
          brooding at the sink.  They argue about Elliot's treatment of
          Rachel.  Elliot says that he will ask Rachel back.  Elliot
          admits he failed.
   
Scene 5:  Leslie is working at the mill as Norman is announced and
          comes in.  Leslie greets Norman and Rita.  Leslie got a
          letter from the guidance office of the college.  They
          wonder why the son of the mill manager needs a student
          loan.  Norman asks his father for a job.  Leslie says he
          doesn't have a position open.  Norman tells Leslie that
          Rachel is the niece of Jack Chandler.

Scene 6:  Rachel Welles walks over to the courthouse, where the bus
          by the big BUS STOP sign and gets on an interstate bus with
          one suitcase.  The destinations on the sign are as follows:
   
             HASTINGS VALLEY, WHITE RIVER and MILL JUNCTION. 
   
          The bus pulls out.
     
Scene 7:  Chandler drives up in his panel wagon anbd honks.  He asks
          Rodney for gas.  Rodney asks if he has cash.  Rodney checks his
          oil and water.  They are okay.  He says that he is going out to
          see a man about buying his farm.  Rodney said that the oil and
          water are ok.  The tank was half full.  Rodney asks for 2.50
          and is paid. [$5.00 fills the tank].
     
Scene 8:  Elliot goes over to the apartment and is told that Rachel left
          Norman and Rita's and has not returned.  Norman said that she
          may have gone back to the farm.  Norman said they'll call him
          when they find out any thing.  Elliot leaves.  Norman asks Rita
          if she knows more than she is telling.

Scene 9:  At the farmhouse in Hastings Valley, Rachel breaks a window and
          unlatches the door.  She gets a candlestick from a cabinet. 
          She puts in a candle and lights it.  She goes down in the
          basement.  She is looking for clues.  She finds a belt buckle
          with the initials JF.  She says, "J F."  She puts the buckle in
          her pocket.  She opens a drawer and peers in.  She looks around
          and is startled by Chandler.  Chandler says, "Homesick, honey?"

Episode 321.
03-21-67
     
          Elliot searches the farmhouse.

WA:       Rachel Welles has returned to the farmhouse where she was
          raised, the farmhouse owned by Jack Chandler.  She has returned
          out of a driving determination to find something that will lead
          to certain knowledge of Chandler.  His life and his habits and
          throw light on the disappearance of Elliot Carson's daughter,
          Allison.  Now having broken into the house, she finds a belt
          buckle, an initialed belt buckle.  Perhaps it is the sort of
          thing that can open up Chandler's past.
     
Intro:    Rachel walking around carrying a candle in a candlestick.  She
          searches in drawers and boxes.  She finds a belt buckle.

Scene 1:  In the basement, Rachel holds the buckle near the candle and
          reads the initials, J F.  She starts back up the stairs and
          Chandler appears from out of almost nowhere.  She asks him what
          he is doing there.  He says that he lives there.  He asks her
          to come back up stairs to talk.  She tries to get away from
          him.  He tells her that she is not going back.  When she gets
          the chance, she hits him on the right side of his head with the
          candlestick and runs away.  [see episode 325].
       
Scene 2:  Rachel Welles apparently ran over to the Burrows farmhouse as
          Mr. Burrows is now driving her back to town in his old car. 
          Rachel is sobbing.  As they are chatting, Mr. Burrows allows
          that he has heart trouble and his wife was upstairs in bed,
          too sick to move when they heard her.  He says that the Carsons
          are fine people.
       
Scene 3:  Elliot Carson shows up at the farmhouse with a flashlight and
          begins looking around.  There is a photograph with presumably
          Chandler and aunt Lucy in the foreground.  Elliot finds the
          candlestick on the floor and notices that the candle is still
          warm.  But Chandler is nowhere to be seen.
       
Scene 4:  Mr. Burrows drops Rachel off at the front entrance of Doctors
          Hospital.  [Mr. Burrows looks like the stereotypical farmer. 
          He looks a bit like Pa Kettle and a little bit like the one
          armed man in "The Fugitive."]  Rachel graciously thanks him for
          the ride and he wishes her good luck. 

          She runs up the main steps of the hospital and goes directly to
          Dr. Rossi's office.  Rossi asks Rachel if she had gone to Jack
          Chandler's farm.  Rachel wants him to call the social worker,
          Mrs. Franks.  She tells the doctor that she has been to
          Hastings Valley.  Rossi thinks that she did go to the farm.   
          The Burrows were too sick to stay with.  Rossi hugs and
          comforts her like a daughter, but almost like a girl-friend. 
          He says she can sleep on the couch in his office.  He gives her
          a sleeping pill and water.  She lies down and he covers her with
          a blanket.  She pleads for him to stay.  But he won't.  He tells
          her good-night and leaves.  Outside he asks Miss House the duty
          nurse for a file box. 
       
Scene 5:  Elliot pounds on Chandler's door at the Boarding house.  No
          answer.  Eli opens his door.  Neither knows where Rachel is. 
          Elliot goes in Eli's room and has coffee.  Elliot says that
          Norman suggested that she might have gone back to the farm. 
          Elliot tells Eli that he went to the farm and that somebody had
          been there.  Constance calls Eli's room to say that Rachel is safe. 

Scene 6:  At Ada Jacks Tavern, Rodney comes in and asks for half a cup of
          coffee.  Black will be fine.  Ada advises Rodney to be careful. 
          She refers to Sandy Webber.  She says that Lee can't give up his
          desire for Sandy.  Sandy comes in the bar wearing an attractive
          turquoise blue dress.  Rodney tells Sandy he wants to go to White
          River instead of the Shoreline because he's had a rough day.

Scene 7:  Dr. Rossi is sitting on a couch outside his office.  Rachel is
          still sleeping inside his office.  Elliot walks up and says that
          someone had broken into Chandler's farmhouse and made a real mess. 
          He tells Rossi that his house will be Rachel's home.  About this
          time Rachel screams and Elliot and Rossi go into Rossi's office
          to calm and comfort her.  Rachel falls asleep again and Elliot
          leaves.  Rossi continues to wait outside his office.

Episode 322.
03-28-67
     
          Rachel shows the belt buckle to Rita.

WA:       The long night for Elliot Carson is at an end.  He has received
          word from Dr. Michael Rossi that Rachel Welles has awakened
          from a sedated sleep.  The night began when Rachel left. 
          Determined to avoid his interrogation on the subject of his
          missing daughter Allison.  He grew more concerned when he
          realized that Rachel, too, had disappeared.  Rachel's reasons
          for leaving and exactly what happened to her while she was gone
          are known at this moment only to her.

Intro:    Elliot drives up in front of the hospital.

Scene 1:  Rossi is talking to Rachel in his office as they hear a knock
          on the door.  Rossi goes outside and warns Elliot not to
          question or pressure her.  Elliot toes in and apologizes to
          Rachel and strongly encourages her to come home.  She says that
          she can't come home with him because he doesn't understand.  He
          wasn't honest with her.  He wants her to understand.  Elliot
          tells her he mistrusts people because of the 18 years he spent
          in prison.  Elliot admits he was responsible for driving
          Allison away also.  He pleads with her to come home.
       
Scene 2:  Constance is in the living room looking out the window, waiting
          as Elliot and Rachel arrive home.  Constance is delighted to
          see Rachel.  Elliot asks for coffee but Rachel doesn't.  She
          just wants to go up to her room.  Elliot says the room is hers
          for however long she wants it.  Rachel says it may be a long
          time.  Rachel shows Constance the bracelet and tells her that
          Elliot says it is hers now.  Rachel goes up to her room. 
          Elliot stokes the fire.  In front of the fireplace, Elliot and
          Constance talk.
     
Scene 3:  In her bedroom, Rachel pulls the belt buckle out of her pocket
          and examines it.
       
Scene 4:  Betty is kneeling in her marvelous red dress in front of the
          safe, as Peyton comes up behind her.  He says open it Betty. 
          Betty guesses that it is Catherine's necklace.  She tells
          Peyton that he wants a portrait to substitute for the portrait
          of Catherine.  Peyton finally admits it to some extent.
   
Scene 5:  In her room, Rachel takes the belt buckle out of her pocket and
          looks at it.  She has a worried look on her face.

Scene 6:  In the upstairs studio, Peyton tells Betty how to open the
          safe.  He tells he to remove a box from the safe.  He tells her
          to open it.  Betty finds Catherine's necklace.  Betty says that
          she is not Catherine.  Peyton says he is fully aware who Betty
          is.  Betty turns around and Peyton puts the necklace around her
          neck and fastens it.  Peyton says they are good for each other. 
          They leave the room.

Scene 7:  Elliot goes over to the Peyton mill.  He goes into Leslie's
          office and asks about Jack Chandler.  He asks Leslie why he
          hired Chandler.  Leslie says he owes Elliot a favor.  Elliot
          wants to see Chandler's personnel file.  Leslie says that
          Elliot has a lot of questions.  Leslie says that Elliot can see
          the file if Chandler okays it.  Leslie asks miss Nolan, his
          secretary, to send for Jack Chandler.  She calls back with the
          word that Chandler hasn't clocked in today.
   
Scene 8:  Back at the Pharmacy, Rachel is talking with Rita.  Rachel
          shows Rita the belt buckle and tells Rita how she came to hit
          Chandler on the head.  Rachel says that she called the mill and
          Chandler hasn't come in today.  She says she may have killed
          him.  A breakfast customer interrupts, asking for his eggs,
          before they freeze to death.
       
Scene 9:  In his hospital office, Rossi tells Norman that Rita can get
          better if she gets enough rest.  Rossi says it is important. 
          Norman thanks Rossi and leaves.
     
Scene 10: At the Shoreline Garage, Rodney is washing his hands as he
          hears a horn honking and he hollers that he is closed.  Lee
          wants the limousine filled with gas, and the water checked. 
          Lee tells Rodney that he has been hired as Peyton's chauffeur. 
          He says that he started this morning.  Lee is obnoxious.  Lee
          says that they seem to share a lot of people.  Steven Cord,
          Peyton, Sandy.  Rodney says it is a small world.  Rodney says,
          "There is nothing you can tell me about Sandy that I don't
          already know."

Episode 323.
03-28-67
     
          Rachel Welles returns to the Carson house.
     
WA:       Rachel Welles has returned to the sanctuary of the Carson home,
          carrying with her, the secret fear that Jack Chandler is dead. 
          Jack Chandler, the man she thought she escaped when she came to
          Peyton Place.  Chandler followed her to the old farmhouse.  In
          a moment of terror, she struck out at him hitting him with a
          heavy candlestick.  She watched him fall to the floor.  In
          Rachel's mind the idea of self-defense has not yet taken shape. 
          All she knows at this moment is that because of her, a human
          being may be dead.

Intro:    Rachel walks across the snow covered square.  In the window
          of the Book Gallery is displayed a copy of a classic Russian
          novel, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, by Fydor Mikhailovich
          Dostoyevsky, published in 1866.

Scene 1:  In the Book Gallery, a sign is posted:

                       Read a good book, lately? 
                         Special on Classics 

          Rachel comes inside the Book Gallery and asks Constance what
          a "classic" is.  Constance tries to explain to Rachel what a
          classic is.  Rachel looks out the window and sees Chandler
          watching them.  He has a bandage on the right side of his
          forehead from the candlestick blow he received from Rachel.   
       
Scene 2:  Martin Peyton is looking at himself in a mirror.  Steven Cord
          knocks and comes in.  Steven says that he has no idea of riding
          in the same car as Lee Webber.  They are going to the Peyton
          Mill.  Lee offers Steven a ride.  Steven tells Webber that he
          is not not to come upstairs.  Webber goes downstairs.
     
Scene 3:  At the Peyton Mills, Leslie is dictating a letter to miss
          Nolan.  He asks her to send Chandler in.  Leslie asks Chandler
          if he has anymore to say before he is fired.  Chandler has a
          bandage on the left side of his forehead.  Chandler leaves. 
          [Others who had bandages in the series were Rachel, miss
          Choate, Norman, Rodney, Joe Rossi, and Eddie.  Betty's only
          injuries were the car wreck with Rodney, and her mis-carriage. 
          Constance cut her finger on a broken ornament.]
         
Scene 4:  Two ladies coming out of a store.  Chandler gets up and walks
          into the Book Gallery.  He greets Constance.  He picks up
          Rachel's dog.  He wants a copy of a hunting and fishing
          magazine.  Cost, 35 cents.  Chandler wants to know what he did
          this morning to upset Constance and Rachel. 
       
Scene 5:  As Chandler is leaving the Book Gallery, Rodney almost runs
          into him.  Rodney is on his way up to see Norman in the
          apartment.  Rodney tells Norman that he has come to whine a
          little bit.  Leslie came to see him.  That Rodney is hiding. 
          Running away from life.  Rodney says he is glad to be out of
          the Peyton house.  Norman tells Rodney that he is the executive
          type.  Norman asks Rodney what he wants out of life.  Norman
          says the Rossi told him there is something wrong with Rita's
          heart.  And that she could get worse.  Rodney tries to
          re-assure Norman.  Norman cries.

Episode 324.

          Peyton meets with attorney William Robert Kennerly at the
          airport.
     
WA:       Tonight, in the bitter cold of a New England winter, Martin
          Peyton has come to a nearby airport to meet one of his Boston
          attorneys, William Kennerly.  A gentleman who has spent more
          than 40 years in the fine print of the Peyton empire.  Kennerly
          has been summoned to Peyton's side on an urgent matter.  A
          legal means of manipulating the surviving members of the Peyton
          family.  Peyton's purpose, to achieve exactly that arrangement
          of human life and human chemistry that suits him.  His means, a
          driving intelligence, and a huge fortune.

Intro:    Lee Webber is driving Martin Peyton in the limousine toward the
          White River Airport.  The limousine stops and Webber gets out
          and walks toward the unloading ramp to the airplane.  Old
          William Kennerly and his secretary miss Wilson walk down the
          stairs from the plane.

Scene 1:  Lee escorts old William Robert Kennerly and his secretary,
          miss Wilson, to the limousine.  Peyton asks miss Wilson to give
          them a moment alone.  Kennerly gets in the limousine and tells
          Martin that this is the very last time he will fly down for Peyton. 
          Kennerly says he can't abide planes.  They discuss the new will. 
          Miss Wilson and Webber witness the new will.  Peyton tells Webber
          that he doesn't have to read it.  Miss Wilson shows Lee Webber
          where to sign.  They sign.  Peyton tells Webber to close the
          privacy window.  Peyton tells Kennerly to have a good trip back. 
          Kennerly and miss Wilson get out of the limousine.  Webber closes
          the door and gets back in the driver's seat.  Peyton tells Webber
          to drive home.
       
Scene 2:  Betty is manipulating a yo-yo in Steven's law office.  Steven's
          secretary [not seen, probably miss Nolan] buzzes to announce
          that Peyton's chauffeur is there to see him.  Steven tells
          Betty to look out the window.  This is Lee Webber's first visit
          to Steven's new office.  Lee Webber tells him that Mr. Peyton
          invites Steven and Betty to dinner.  Lee says that Kennerly
          hates to fly.  Webber says that he made it back from the
          airport in 19 minutes.  Steven is wearing a class ring on his
          right hand.  Betty accepts the dinner invitation for herself
          and Steven.  Webber leaves.  Steven and Betty continue to talk. 
          Steven tells Betty that they will pretend that they are not the
          least bit interested in his new will.
       
Scene 3:  Sandy, coming out of her house, encounters Rodney on the wharf. 
          Rodney invites her to dinner, her choice.  He mentions the
          Shoreline Cafe, Mamasitos, the Shan-gri-La, and fo course, the
          fabulous Colonial Inn.  They go to his hard top convertible and
          head to the Colonial Inn for dinner.  She wants to change
          clothes, but he insists that it wasn't necessary because it is
          so dark in there you can't even read the menu. 
       
Scene 4:  The Carson house chimes have evidently rung and Constance comes
          down the stairs to admit Dr. Rossi.  He says that he is there
          to see how Rachel is doing.  Constance says that Rachel is
          upstairs tending to Matthew.  Rossi has brought a college
          catalog.  Rossi goes upstairs to see Rachel.  She is changing
          Matthew as Rossi knocks. 

Scene 5:  Rossi begins talking to her about her education.  Rachel is
          wearing an apron.  Rachel says that she is busy with Matthew. 
          Rossi says she can spare one or two nights a week.  He leaves a
          school catalog with her and leaves.
       
Scene 6:  Lee Webber drives up to the Colonial Post Inn and goes in. 
          Rodney and Sandy drive up and Rodney gets out.  He walks around
          the car and opens the door for Sandy.  Lee comes out, sees them
          and is agitated.
       
Scene 7:  Norman is stirring a pot as Ada rings the bell.  She has come
          to have dinner with Norman and Rita.  He is preparing supper
          for the three of them.  Ada has brought left-overs.  Norman
          says that Rita won't have to cook for a month.  She would like
          to do more for them.  She tries to hand him a check from
          Leslie.  Rita comes to the door.  Norman goes to the door and
          carries Rita into the apartment.  This is their 424th day
          anniversary.  It has been one year and two months.  They were
          married 01-24-66.  This day is 04-03-67.
     
Scene 8:  Chandler goes up the stairs at the boarding house.  He goes in
          room 5.  There he finds Elliot waiting for him.  Chandler asks
          how he got in.  He offers Elliot a drink.  Chandler says it is
          cold on the loading dock.  Elliot insists on Chandler answering
          a few questions.  Elliot wants to know what happened at the
          farm house.  Chandler went to the farm to get it ready to sell. 
          Elliot leaves.

Episode 325

          Rodney takes Sandy webber to dinner at the Inn.

WA:       Lee Webber is a man who believes in the concept of ownership.
          Despite the fact that his wife, Sandy, has filed for divorce,
          he's convinced that she still belongs to him.  That she is
          still private property.  He knows that some months ago Sandy
          and Rodney Harrington met, while he sat in a jail cell.  Now,
          Sandy is dating Rodney Harrington openly.  The private property
          is no longer his.
     
Intro:    Lee Webber, chauffeur, is pacing up and down beside the Peyton
          limousine as Rodney Harrington drives up in his white-over-blue
          rag-top convertible, tag no. 691-352.  Rodney parks in front of
          the limo and escorts Sandy into the Colonial Post Inn.

Scene 1:  Inside the Inn, Rodney asks the hostess for a table for two.
          She says it will be just a moment and seats them at a table,
          not far from Martin Peyton.  Rodney's grandfather Peyton is
          hosting Steven and Betty after meeting with his Boston
          attorney, William Robert Kennerly, at the airport.  Peyton
          sees Rodney and his date, stands up, goes over to Rodney's
          table and invites Rodney and the charming young lady,
          Sandy, to sit at his table with Steven and Betty.  Peyton seats
          Sandy to his left.
       
Scene 2:  Rachel, not properly dressed for the cold, is outside whistling
          for her puppy.  Chandler had snared the puppy a short time
          before.  Rachel does not find her puppy.
     
Scene 3:  Elliot is talking to Constance in the kitchen as Rachel comes
          back in, carrying a doggie dish of milk.  Constance admonishes
          her to put her coat on before going out again.  Rachel goes
          outside one more time and comes back inside.  Elliot puts on
          his coat and goes for a drive with Rachel. 
       
Scene 4:  Chandler sees Leslie going into the Clarion carrying a manila
          envelope.  Inside the Clarion, Rachel and Elliot are composing
          a lost dog advertisement.  Elliot gives Rachel the number,
          555-3251, the telephone number of the Peyton mansion.  Leslie
          comes in.  Rachel takes the phone number to Jerry, the
          composing room Linotype® operator.  Leslie tells Elliot he
          has decided to share the personnel records on Chandler.

Scene 5:  Rodney and Sandy go into the Colonial Post Inn and talk a
          little while.  Rodney wants to make a call so Sandy goes
          outside for some fresh air.  Outside Lee girlhandles his
          estranged wife, Sandy.  Sandy tells Lee, "What I do, and
          who I do it with, is none of your business."

          Rodney comes outside and slugs Lee.  Lee brushes off his
          chauffeur's cap, gets back in the limousine, and drives off. 

          Rodney asks Sandy if she is all right.  He spots Chandler,
          across from the General Store, and helps Sandy in his car. 
          Rodney calls to Chandler and walks over to him.  Rodney says,
          "Hey, Chandler, Hey Chandler."  Chandler says, "Get lost kid."
          Rodney goes in the Clarion.  Leslie is inside, talking with
          Elliot.
       
Scene 6:  Inside the Clarion, Rodney informs Elliot, Leslie, and Rachel
          about Chandler hanging around.  Sandy Webber honks the horn on
          Rodney's convertible and Rodney leaves the office.  Outside, it
          is apparent that Sandy has driven the car around the square to
          the front of the Clarion. 
       
Scene 7:  In Steven and Betty's bedroom on the second floor of the
          mansion, they roll around on the bed and discuss the events of
          the evening.  She asks Steven why he didn't set up a practice
          in Boston.  Steven says that he wants to be his own man.
       
Scene 8:  Peyton is writing at his small bedroom desk as Betty brings him
          a tray with his medicine.  He gives her the written combination
          to the safe and she dials with her right hand.  Martin gives
          her the key to the strong box and she inserts the papers and
          puts them in the safe.  Peyton says that he doesn't need the
          medicine.  Peyton opines that Betty has remarkable
          self-control.  That she didn't look at the papers, once.  Betty
          wishes Peyton a goodnight.
       
Scene 9:  Rodney is driving Sandy home.  He talks about Chandler hovering
          over Rachel.  Sandy says Rodney is treating her like a
          wharf-rat.  Rodney reminds her of her no-strings promise. 
          He says that he doesn't want to argue and takes her home and
          kisses her goodnight.

          Lee Webber finds Rachel's puppy.
       
WA:       The slow and quiet turn of the season from winter to spring has
          gone unnoticed by at least one resident of Peyton Place.  Today,
          Jack Chandler holds Rachel's small dog in his hands.  He has held
          the dog in his possession for some time, ever since he picked him
          up outside the home of the Elliot Carsons.  Exactly why he picked
          him up is locked deep inside his instinctive feelings about Rachel. 
          Feelings which are now shared by Lee Webber, for an entirely
          different reason.  Webber is determined to win back his wife, Sandy.
       
Intro:    Chandler walks west along the street past Les Femmes and the Book
          Gallery, holding Rachel's puppy.  He is about to pass the Clarion
          as a police car drives by.  He quickly puts the puppy through the
          front right window of Peyton's limousine which Lee Webber has parked
          in front of the Clarion.  Lee Webber, whistling, comes out of the
          General Store with a brown paper sack full of purchases.  He almost
          brushes shoulders with Chandler.
           
Scene 1:  Lee puts the sack through the middle window and finds the puppy
          on the front seat of the Peyton limousine.  He talks briefly to
          the puppy and gets in the limousine.  Chandler is seen watching. 
          Lee gets in the limousine and drives off headed east past the Book
          Gallery.
       
Scene 2:  Dr. Rossi without his medical bag goes in to see Peyton.  He tells
          Peyton that since he is now Chief-of-Staff of the hospital, he has
          decided to turn Peyton's case over to Dr. Fielding.  Peyton
          threatens to withdraw support from the hospital.  Rossi tells him
          not to make threats.  He asks Peyton why he hired Lee Webber, the
          man who killed Ann Howard, Rossi's fiancйe and Peyton's granddaughter.
       
Scene 3:  In the Carson home, Rachel picks up the phone and answers it.  Lee
          Webber is calling from the Peyton mansion, to say he has found her
          puppy.  He asks her to come over to the Peyton house, where he works
          and lives, to get it.  He tells her that his name is Lee Webber. 
          He again tells her to come over and he will give her the puppy.
         
Scene 4:  Leslie drives over to the Shoreline Garage and goes in.  Rodney has
          one foot on his desk and is reading the sports page.  Leslie asks
          Rodney to go have lunch with him.  Rodney says that he has already
          eaten.  Rodney asks Leslie if he needs his gas tank filled.  Leslie
          asks Rodney to go to New York with him to learn how the mill business
          is run.  Leslie says he wants to share what he has learned with Rodney. 
          They talk about Martin Peyton, Sandy Webber, and Steven Cord.

Scene 5:  Norman comes into the apartment, with the brown paper sack full of
          groceries, and finds Rita asleep on the sofa.  Rita wakes up and offers
          to fix lunch for him.  Norman says he doesn't want her to strain herself. 
          Constance, carrying baby Matthew, knocks and Norman lets her in.  Rita
          holds the baby for a short while and hands him back to Constance.  Rita
          agrees to baby-sit Matthew that night about 7:00.  Rita says she is not
          ill, she is just tired.  Constance says she should probably talk with
          Dr. Rossi first.  Rita thanks Constance and Constance leaves.  Rita
          says to Norman, "Thanks a lot." 
     
Scene 6:  At the General Store, Eli is checking out Mrs. Linden, the saleslady
          from the Les Femmes botique.  She has purchased $7.31 of merchandise
          including a mop.  Elliot peeks through the window.  Mrs. Linden leaves. 
          Elliot comes in to ask Eli to help in investigating Chandler.  Elliot
          has gotten the personnel records on Chandler from Leslie.  Eli first
          says to leave it alone, but eventually agrees to help.
     
Scene 7:  At the mill, Leslie comes into his office and his current receptionist,
          miss Harris, tells him Mrs. Cord is waiting to see him.  He tells Betty
          that he will not release the reports without a written request.  Betty
          says she will tell Peyton and she starts to leave.  Miss Harris tells
          Leslie that the reports are on his desk.  He gives the reports to Betty
          and she leaves.  Leslie dictates memo number 424 concerning Kennerly
          and the Peyton estate.  He asks miss Harris to get all the papers on
          the Peyton estate and bring them to him.
       
Scene 8:  At the mansion, Lee Webber is tending the puppy as there is a knock on
          the front door.  He goes upstairs through the livingroom and opens the
          door.  It is Rachel, who has come for her puppy.  He points to the door
          bell button and tells her to ring, not knock.  Lee sits on a footstool
          in the livingroom and brushes the tips of his shoes.  She tells him that
          if he gets that on the rug, it won't come out.  Lee says that they can
          get another rug.  She asks if Mr. Peyton is there.  Lee tells her that
          Peyton is getting some sack time.  She asks where the puppy is.  They
          talk.  He asks if she is Rodney's girl.  Rachel says she is not Rodney
          or anybody's girl.  Lee says he wants to take her out on a date.  She
          asks for her puppy.  Lee opens the door to the basement and they go
          down where the puppy is.  Rachel sees the puppy and runs over to it. 
          Rachel tries to give Lee the $10.00 reward from her purse.  He doesn't
          accept it.  He wants to go out on a date with her.  Rachel is frightened
          and tries to run out.  Lee stops her and forcefully kisses her.  She
          runs up to the livingroom through the double doors.  Lee vaults the sofa
          and catches her. 

          Betty comes in the front door which helps Rachel to get away from Lee. 
          Lee offers to give Rachel a ride home.  Rachel declines.  Betty comes
          in and Lee grabs her chin with his right hand putting his thumb on the
          center of her chin.  Lee tells Betty that nosy girls are ugly girls.

          Rachel visits Jack Chandler at the boarding house.

WA:       Steven Cord, as a young man who lived most of his life unaware
          of his true heritage, now that he knows he's the grandson of
          Martin Peyton, he's determined to claim the dignity that comes
          with the Peyton dynasty.  The authority, and the money to use
          the authority.  But Steven saw Martin Peyton crudely put down
          another grandson, Rodney Harrington, as a means of placing
          Steven in favor.  Steven is determined to make sure that Rodney
          understands the rules of war.  His rules of war, not Martin
          Peyton's.
       
Intro:    Steven walks along the wharf toward the Shoreline Garage. 
   
Scene 1:  Steven goes in the Shoreline Garage to talk with Rodney. 
          Rodney sits down at the typewriter to make out a bill.  Steven
          apologizes for what their grandfather said to Rodney the
          previous evening at the family dinner at the Colonial Post Inn. 
          Steven says that Peyton was rude.  Rodney says that Steven
          doesn't have to act as mediator.  They talk about living at the
          Peyton house.  Steven says he always gets a kick out of just
          dropping by the garage.  He leaves.
     
Scene 2:  Lee Webber sees Steven and asks if he can take him somewhere. 
          He tells Steven that he dropped the old man off at the mill. 
          They swap barbs.  Steven tells Lee to get off his back.  Steven
          walks off.
       
Scene 3:  Betty comes in the Book Gallery and speaks to Matthew, calling
          him Slugger.  [Later in the series Susan Winter calls Fred
          Russell Slugger.]  Rachel is running the store and introduces
          herself to Betty.  She tells Betty that this is Matthew.  Betty
          warns Rachel about Lee Webber.  Rachel asks Betty if Lee killed
          Ann Howard.  Betty says she thinks so.  Betty said that she was
          never close to Allison. 
       
Scene 4:  Lee sees Chandler on the wharf and asks for the five dollars he
          won on the bet about becoming chauffeur to Martin Peyton. 
          Chandler says he's short right now.  He evidently didn't know
          that Lee was the driver of the car that he left the puppy in. 
          Chandler asks Lee how he met Rachel.  Lee said that somebody
          left a puppy in the car.  Lee invites Chandler in for a drink. 
          Lee asks Chandler if he put the puppy in the limo.  Chandler
          leaves.  Chandler calls Lee a jailbird.  Lee wants Chandler
          to set up a date for him with Rachel.  Chandler grabs and threatens
          Lee.  Lee says that Chandler has awful strong feelings for just
          her uncle.
   
Scene 5:  In the bedroom, in a rented Tux, Elliot Carson is practicing a
          chamber-of-commerce speech.  Rachel's puppy, named "Puppy,"
          brings the "JF" belt buckle to Elliot.  Rachel said that she
          had found it and that the puppy liked to play with it.  Rita is
          now watching.  Constance is wearing a snazzy black evening gown. 
          Elliot examines the belt buckle.  Rachel takes the puppy in the
          nursery.  Rita is staring at Rachel.  Rachel had found the belt
          buckle in Chandler's farmhouse, in Chandler's work clothes.

Scene 6:  Mary admits Leslie into the mansion and asks him to wait while
          she checks to see if Peyton will see him.  Peyton is in the
          livingroom wearing his red smoking jacket.  Leslie asks Peyton
          if he has changed his will, dis-inherited his sons.  They
          argue.  Leslie says that Rodney will grow with his influence. 
          Peyton says, "My chauffeur's wife has more influence over your
          grease-monkey son than you do."  Leslie is furious.  Lee comes
          in and asks if everything is ok.  Peyton asks Lee to escort
          Leslie to the door.  Lee ushers him out.  Peyton dismisses Lee,
          "Goodnight, Webber."
   
Scene 7:  In Mrs. Hewitt's boarding house, Chandler is packing his
          suitcase as he hears a subdued knock at the door.  It is Rachel
          carrying three books.  She says, "Hello, Uncle Jack."  She asks
          if she can come in.  She says she can only stay for a minute. 
          He says that she can stay as long as she likes.

          Harrington pressures Betty to steal Peyton's will.

WA:       The wharf in Peyton Place.  A frightened Rachel Welles heads
          for a meeting.  A dangerous meeting with Jack Chandler in the
          room of his boarding house.  She is convinced she will learn
          something about Chandler's involvement with the missing
          Allison.  Tonight, she is determined to get to know Jack
          Chandler.
       
Intro:    Rachel is walking on the wharf.  Carrying four textbooks,
          Rachel climbs the steps to the room of Chandler's
          boarding-house.
       
Scene 1:  Rachel knocks on the door of room 5 of the boarding house. 
          Chandler lets her in.  She mentions hitting him on the head. 
          She wonders if he was hurt bad.  She asks why he didn't let her
          see other people when they lived on the farm.  She said that he
          never gave her a chance.  He says that he didn't think the
          other people were good enough for her.  She complains that he
          never told her where he was from.  Chandler says that he trusts
          her.  She leaves and walks on the wharf.  Norman sees Rachel on
          the wharf and calls to her.  She either doesn't hear him or at
          least doesn't want to answer.
       
Scene 2:  Norman and Rita arrive at the apartment and he offers to fix a
          meal.  Norman tells Rita that he saw Rachel coming out of Jack
          Chandler's apartment house.  She says that Eli lives there,
          too.  Norman doesn't want her to get involved.  Norman tells
          Rita that she doesn't have any sense.  She has too much heart,
          that she is too gullible.  Rita says, "If I'm going to die, I'm
          going to die."
       
Scene 3:  Still carrying the four textbooks, Rachel brings her school
          schedule to Rossi's office for him to look at.  She is enrolled
          in Basic English, Fundamentals of American History, and General
          Math.  Rossi says it looks fine.  They talk.  She complains
          that everything seems so basic and fundamental.  Everything has
          prerequisites.
       
Scene 4:  At the mill office, Rodney has brought Leslie's repaired car
          back and returns him his car keys.  He says that he will bill
          him at the end of the month.  Leslie asks if Rodney has seen
          Betty lately.  Rodney says he doesn't see Betty.  And that he
          will always care about Betty.
       
Scene 5:  Elliot and Rachel are eating at the breakfast table in the
          Carson kitchen with Constance standing in the background.  They
          read the story of Matthew's christening in the paper.  Elliot
          mentioned that he had called in the story to Jerry the
          previous night.  The door chime rings and Lee is there at the
          door.  Lee says he wants to take Rachel out sometime.  Elliot
          tells Lee that he is not good enough for Rachel.  Lee says thet
          he and Elliot were both dealt a bad hand.  Elliot gives him 10
          bucks and sends him on his way.  Lee asks if Rachel lets him
          call her "Allison."  Lee puts his hat on and strolls back to
          the Peyton limousine.
       
Scene 6:  At the mill, Betty responds to Leslie's summons.  He pressures
          her to find out what is in the will.  Betty says that she
          doesn't know what is in the will.  He wants her to get the will
          from the safe in the upstairs bedroom.  Leslie says he wants
          her to do it for Rodney.  Leslie says Rodney is preeocupied
          with girls and gasoline.  He says that she owes it to Rodney. 
          Leslie threatens her with the Blaine report about her escapade
          in New York.  She says that the Blaine report was a lie.

Episode 329.

          Betty almost steals the will.
       
WA:       There was a dark side to the life of Betty Anderson now that
          has come back to haunt her, now that she is Mrs. Steven Cord. 
          A private detective's report which stated she was immorally
          involved with an unknown man while she lived in New York City. 
          The report was false, but it exists, and Leslie Harrington has
          threatened to reveal it to her husband, if Betty does not bring
          him Martin Peyton's will.

Intro:    Betty stands a while and then walks up the stairs in the Peyton
          mansion.

Scene 1:  Betty opens the door to the bedroom and studio.  She approaches
          the safe and kneels down.  Steven Cord calls to her from
          downstairs.  She comes down the stairs.  He is excited about a
          career opportunity.  Steven says he is sitting on top of the
          world.  Steven grabs Betty's chin and kisses her.  Steven
          mentions a Judge Fischer.  Betty goes back upstairs to fix her
          face.
       
Scene 2:  In the Pharmacy Betty is drinking coffee as Leslie comes in and
          walks over.  The waitress asks Betty How the house is coming. 
          Harrington put pressure on her some more.  Leslie mentions the
          Blaine report.  Leslie says that he is doing is for Rodney.  He
          wants the will tomorrow.
       
Scene 3:  Rossi is talking to his 5 inch reel-to-reel tape recorder when
          a nurse, on the intercom, interrupts him.  He tells her he
          doesn't have any appointments at that hour.  She tells him that
          Rita Harrington is there to see him.  Rita comes in and is
          asked how she feels.  She is there to try to convince Rossi
          that she is healthy enough to take care of Matthew while Rachel
          is in school.  Rossi doesn't want her to take on the extra
          strain because she is working at the Pharmacy.  He calls it the
          drug store.  Rossi mentions Dr. Lyons.  Rita says it looks like
          she never will have a child of her own.  Rossi mentions that
          she had rheumatic fever when she was a child.  It can be
          completely cured and she can have a child of her own in time. 
          He assures her that mitral stenosis is not hereditary. 
          Rossi says that none of us is born with a written guarantee. 
          Rita leaves to go back to work.
       
Scene 4:  Betty drives up to the Shoreline Garage in a rag-top
          convertible with the lame complaint that the car radio doesn't
          work.  Rodney tries to beg off.  He is not a radio expert. 
          Rodney puts the wire back in jack that Betty had pulled out. 
          They talk quite a while.  Betty asks if Rodney ever thinks how
          it would have been if she had not lost the baby.

          As Betty drives off, Leslie drives up and walks over.  He talks
          with Rodney about Betty.  Rodney says, "I don't want to hear
          that kind of talk from anyone.  You included.  And I'm telling
          you something.  I've had enough of your sermons on morality.
          Leslie goes back to his car and drives off.  Rodney goes back
          in the garage.

Scene 5:  Betty walks on the wharf.  She walks on one of the docks.
       
Scene 6:  In the rooming house, Eli is tying a May fly when
          Chandler walks in carrying a bottle.  They start out being
          quite civil to each other.  Chandler offers to buy Eli a drink. 
          Chandler pours himself a drink.  He asks if Eli ever goes
          fishing in the valley.  Chandler mentions the stream behind
          Fred Barney's.  He asks if Elliot has any hobbies.  Chandler
          mentions prison and the conversation goes downhill really fast. 
          Chandler talks about when Elliot blasted into his room to talk
          about Rachel.  Chandler asks what is will take to get Elliot
          off his back.  He mentions fishing near Fred Barney's place. 
          And Mr. Jefferson.

          Betty steals Peyton's will from the safe.
       
WA:       A portrait commissioned by Martin Peyton.  A bright symbol of
          Betty Anderson Cord's future.  Now threatened by a tarnished
          image, out of her past.  A frightened disheveled girl in the
          hallway of a New York apartment, accepting money from a strange
          man.  Leslie Harrington has an eye-witness account of the
          incident.  The Blaine report.  And now he has given Betty an
          ultimatum.  A glimpse of the will, now locked in Peyton's safe. 
          Or a copy of the Blaine report will be delivered to her
          husband, Steven.  There is a third choice, to reveal the whole
          truth to Martin Peyton.

Intro:    Betty uncovers her portrait on the artist's easel.

Scene 1:  Betty is peeking at her portrait.  Martin comes over and covers
          it up again.  The artist is named Barrett Costa.  Peyton asks
          Betty if she thinks the artist is doing her justice.  Betty
          says that she can't tell yet.  Peyton tells Betty to open the
          safe to get the necklace.  Betty says that she dropped out of
          school.  Betty goes into the next room and opens the safe. 
          They talk.  Peyton says that Brian Cord was a novelty to
          Catherine.  The artist rings the mansion chimes.
   
Scene 2:  In the Clarion office, Elliot seems to be admiring himself in
          the mirror.  He is actually trying to use a paperclip to
          simulate a collar stay.  The displayed newspaper is still
          PEACE.  Eli says that Chandler came into his store to fish for
          information.  He and his father talk about investigating
          Chandler.  Elliot didn't know that Eli had already been to
          Hastings Valley to ask about Chandler.  He talked with mailman,
          Walt Bristow.
   
Scene 3:  Rita comes in the front door of Ada Jacks' Tavern.  Ada says
          that she has just made a fresh pot of coffee.  Rita says she
          has already had hers.  Rita says that Rachel has started night
          school.  Rita says that she heard that Chandler was an old
          customer.  Rita asks if Chandler was a friend of her father's. 
          Ada refers to Eddie Jacks as Rita's daddy.  Ada asks when Rita
          last saw Dr. Rossi.  She talks with her mother about inherited
          diseases.  Specifically mitral stenosis.  Ada says that you
          get rheumatic fever from a germ.  Not inherited.  Rita says
          that her daddy and Chandler sound like two peas in a pod.
       
Scene 4:  At the Colonial Post Inn, Betty knocks, and then goes in to see
          Leslie.  Leslie asks Betty if she has had lunch.  Leslie says
          that Betty is dominated by ambition.  Betty promises to get the
          will.  Betty asks if Leslie believed what was in the Blaine
          report.  Betty slaps Leslie and leaves.
   
Scene 5:  Steven charges his meal at the Inn and notices Betty.  He asked
          the desk clerk what Betty was doing there.  He was told she saw
          Leslie Harrington.
       
Scene 6:  In the Book Gallery, Elliot tells Constance that Eli had been
          checking up on Jack Chandler.  Elliot argues with Constance
          about Rachel.  Elliot talks about the belt buckle.  They talk
          about Allison.
     
Scene 7:  Betty returns to the mansion and goes upstairs.  She knocks,
          then goes through Peyton's studio room to the room with the
          safe.  She opens it with her right hand.  She takes the will. 
          Lee Webber has been watching and sees her do it.  She closes
          the safe and leaves.

          Lee Webber observes Betty taking Peyton's will.
       
WA:       To a young woman whose daily life consists of maintaining a
          world for her husband, the idea of blackmail is so foreign, so
          repugnant, that, like sudden death, it is something that
          happens to others.  Today, Betty Anderson Cord has been
          blackmailed.  Leslie Harrington has threatended to make public
          the Blaine report.  A seemingly sordid moment in Betty's past. 
          In order to force her to take Martin's will from the house and
          deliver it to him.  Betty has tried desperately to avoid
          submitting to this crude maneuver.  She has tried and failed. 
          But in the shadows, Lee Webber watches, waiting for his moment
          in time.

Intro:    Hallway of the Peyton mansion.  Betty walks to the bedroom
          portrait studio.  She opens the safe and looks at the will.

Scene 1:  Lee watches Betty take the will and put it in her purse.  She
          leaves the safe room and Peyton's studio.
       
          Betty goes goes downstairs and calls Steven.  She tells Steven
          she is running an errand for Peyton.  The maid, Mary, inquires
          of Betty if Steven likes okra.  She says that Peyton likes it
          and than some people do not.  Betty says that she doesn't know. 

Scene 2:  Outside the mansion Betty gets in her hard-top convertible. 
          She reads the will.  Lee Webber watches her from a second story
          window.

                LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of Martin Peyton

                I appoint William Kennerly of Boston,
                Suffock County, Massachusetts executor.

                I appoint my son-in-law, Leslie Harrington,
                trustee of all my properties until
                the principal beneficiary shall reach
                the age of thirty,
                Betty Anderson Cord.

                I give devise and bequeath all the rest,
                residue and remainder of my property,
                of whatsoever nature,

Scene 3:  At the mill, Leslie's secretary, miss Nolan, has brought him
          some papers.  She mentions the Heywood contract.  Betty's
          shadow is seen through the translucent windows of Leslie's
          office.  Betty comes in the office and gives Leslie the will. 
          In return he gives her the Blaine report.  Leslie congratulates
          her.  She tells him that he is the trustee.  Leslie says, "I've
          got my orders."  He says that Peyton is worth between 10 and 15
          million.  Leslie says that Betty, high school dropout, has
          always loved his son and that she always will.  Leslie says
          that he never thought he would be glad to see Betty and Rodney
          back together. 

Scene 4:  Elliot searches Rachel's room.  Constance comes in.  Constance
          says that he will drive her out of the house again.  He finds
          the Belt Buckle.  He remembers that in prison, belt buckles
          were made out of license plate tabs.  He is going to find out
          what state prison the buckle was made in.

Scene 5:  Rita is in the Cider Barrel and Sandy comes over to talk and
          ask questions.  Rita asks Sandy for more coffee.   Rita spots
          Rachel and at the foot of the steps to the boarding house and
          warns her not to go up to see Chandler again.  Rachel tells
          Rita she should be home resting.  From the pay phone by the
          stairs, Rita calls for Dr. Rossi.  Rita is told that Dr. Rossi
          is busy so she asks to wait on the line.
       
Scene 6:  In his room, Chandler tells Rachel that he went all the way to
          White River to get chocolates for her.  Rachel asks about
          Chandler's mother.  She asks Chandler where he was born.  He
          evades the question.
     
Scene 7:  Steven drives up to the mansion and uses a key to get in.  He
          asks maid Mary if Betty is upstairs.  Mary says, no.  He asks
          if she is home.  is home.  Mary says, not yet.  He asks if she
          has called.  Steven comes in the front door and tries to take
          the tray from Mary.  Steven asks Lee what he is doing.  Lee
          says that he is trying to earn his eagle scout badge.  Lee
          offers to fix a drink for Steven.  He says he has a story to
          tell Steven.  Steven says he doesn't want to hear it.  Lee
          asks, "Even if its about your little wife?"

          Rita collapses in Rodney's garage.

WA:       Steven Cord could have had just about anything he asked of his
          grandfather Martin Peyton.  Steven chose this house.  The house
          on the hill.  The Peyton house.  Steven moved in with his wife,
          Betty, across the corridor from Martin Peyton himself.  But the
          Peyton house has never been just a residence.  Martin Peyton
          has brought someone else into this ancient battleground.  A
          young man named Lee Webber to serve as his chauffeur.  A young
          man who would do anything.  Anything to hurt Steven Cord.
     
Intro:    Steven drives up to the Peyton house.
     
Scene 1:  Lee Webber imposes himself on Steven Cord.  He tells Steven
          that Betty took the will from Peyton's safe.  He saw her.  He
          knows that it was the will, because he signed it at the
          airport.  Lee wanders off into the livingroom.  Lee tells
          Steven that Betty took the will from Peyton's safe.  Lee tells
          Steven about Peyton meeting with Kennerly at the airport.  Lee
          tells about Betty going to the mill to see Leslie Harrington. 
          Steven accuses Lee of lying.
       
Scene 2:  Having received the emergency phone call, Rossi meets up with
          Rita at the steps below Chandler's room.  Rossi tells Rita to
          wait at her mother's.  Rossi rushes up the steps and busts into
          room 5, Chandler's room.  He finds Rachel with Chandler.  They
          are looking at some pictures and maps.  Chandler tells Rachel
          to tell Rossi that she is there of her own will.  Rossi tells
          Rachel to stay from Rachel.  He tells Rossi to leave.  Chandler
          tells Rachel to stay.  Rossi takes Rachel and leaves.  Chandler
          yells, "You're no good, Rachel."  Rossi tells Rachel that she
          must tell all she knows about Allison.  As they are driving
          off, in Rossi's open convertible, Rita calls after them, but
          she is not heard.
       
Scene 3:  Rita is strolling on the wharf.  Rodney calls to her and takes
          her into the garage and sits her down to rest.  Rita tells
          Rodney about Rachel, Chandler, and Dr. Rossi.  Rodney gives her
          a drink of coffee.  Rodney is talking to Rita as she falls over
          in a faint.  She is taken to the hospital.
       
Scene 4:  At the Clarion, Elliot is on the phone taking notes, as Eli
          enters.  Eliott tells Eli that he thinks that "the buckle with
          the initials JF," was made in a prison metal shop.  It was made
          from metal license plate tabs with a serial number on the back. 
          In a Texas prison in 1956, there was a man named was Jack
          Forrest, who worked in the metal shop.  He had been convicted
          of criminal assault.  Eli says that Forrest and Chandler may be
          one and the same man.  Wes Newtson did the search for him.

Scene 5:  Dr. Rossi brings Rachel to the Carson house.  Constance pulls
          the curtains aside and watches.  Rossi brings Rachel in and
          asks where Elliot is.  Thay talk in the livingtoom.  Constance
          says he is at work.  Rossi explains to Constance why they must
          keep Rachel away from Chandler.  Rossi says that Chandler is
          obsessed with Rachel.  Constance talks about Ann Howard.  She
          says that Matthew came along for her and Rachel came along for
          Dr. Rossi.
     
Scene 6:  Betty lets herself into the Peyton house, goes upstairs, and
          unexpectedly finds Martin Peyton in the bedroom portrait
          studio.  Peyton arouses and asks, "Betty, is that you?"  He
          tells her that Mary is fixing dinner.  Peyton asks her to stay. 
          He asks her to tell him about her day.  She excuses herself. 
          Shes says she hasn't seen Steven yet and she must change.  She
          leaves.

          Steven accuses Betty of lieing.

WA:       Tonight, Steven Cord has been informed that his wife, Betty,
          opened Martin Peyton's safe and removed a copy of his amended
          will.  He has been informed further that Betty took the will to
          Leslie Harrington.  He must also consider the source of his own
          deep feelings about the manipulations of Martin Peyton and the
          truth of his wife's love.  Steven's wife, Betty, did take the
          will, but taking it was only half the struggle.  She must now
          return it to the safe.  Unfortunately, her first efforts, this
          evening, were blocked by the presence in the room of Martin
          Peyton himself.  The will thus remains in Betty's purse and she
          must find a way to replace it as quickly as possible.
       
Intro:    Steven drives up to the Peyton house and goes upstairs.

Scene 1:  In the upstairs hallway Steven accuses Betty of lying.  She
          talks about her friend, Kay Ramsey.  She came to look at the
          old homestead.  She is going to teach in San Francisco.  Betty
          says that Steven is angry.  He says disappointed.  He says,
          "Betty, let's talk."  He saw her at the Inn.  Lee Webber told
          Steven about Betty stealing the will.  Betty is shocked and
          tries to explain without admitting anything.  Steven grabs
          Betty's chin. Without looking in her purse, Steven walks off
          angry and disappointed.
       
Scene 2:  Rita awakens in the hospital being prepared to get an EKG.  She
          is lying on a gurney while Rossi explains how an EKG
          works.  A nurse is assisting Rossi.  Rossi threatens to spank
          her if he finds out she is disobeying doctor's orders.  Rita
          asks if she had a heart attack.  Rossi says that he doesn't
          think so.
       
Scene 3:  Rossi returns to his office to find Elliot waiting.  They talk
          about Rachel.  Elliot leaves.  Rossi shuts the door.
       
Scene 4:  Back at the mansion, Lee Webber knocks and enters Martin
          Peyton's bedroom studio.  Peyton is lying in bed in his his
          smoking jacket.  Peyton does not welcome him.  Lee reports to
          Peyton what he has done.  Peyton offers Webber some brandy. 
          When Webber reaches for it, Peyton hits his right hand with his
          cane.  This is to emphasize that Webber is a servant, not a
          partner or confidant.  The tap indicated that the bell had not
          yet rung.  He compared Lee to Pavlov's dog.
   
Scene 5:  At the hospital, Ada Jacks walks to the Information desk and
          asks for Rita.  Rodney walks up and comforts her and gives her
          a status report on her daughter, Rita.  Rita is resting. 
          Rodney suggests that they sit.
       
Scene 6:  On the wharf, Elliot starts to go up the stairs to Chandler's
          room.  Ada sees him and invites him in to her tavern.  They
          talk about Chandler for a time.  Then Elliot leaves. 
   
Scene 7:  At his boarding house, Chandler comes out on the stair landing
          and surveys the scene.

          Chandler asks Leslie for $2000 for a trip.

WA:       Rachel Welles exists in a trap of her own making.  When she
          first came to Peyton Place she lied about her knowledge of the
          missing daughter of the Elliot Carsons, Allison.  She lied to
          prevent the man, who calls himself Jack Chandler, from harming
          the Carsons and their infant son in any way.  Her lies about
          Chandler and the missing Allison multiply, until this
          18-year-old girl felt herself strangling on a deceit, that was
          intended to help, not hurt, the people who care so much for
          her.
   
Intro:    Elliot is walking on the wharf at night.  He walks by Ada
          Jacks' Tavern.  Overhead shot of Rachel in a red dress on her
          bed in the Carson house.   
   
Scene 1:  In her bedroom in the Carson house.  Elliot demands that Rachel
          tell him everything she knows about Chandler.  She tells him
          that she found the bracelet in Chandler's car.  She found the
          buckle on the farm in Chandler's work clothes.  He asks her
          about people with the initials JF.  He asks her if she ever
          heard the name, Jack Forrest.  Rachel suggests that Chandler
          might have changed his name.  Constance joins them in the
          bedroom.  Constance asks some questions.  Rachel said that she
          thought she might have killed Chandler.  Elliot says it was a
          very brave and very foolish thing she did.  Constance wants
          Elliot to call the police.  But he leaves.  Constance is
          concerned when Elliot leaves the house to look for Chandler. 
          She doesn't want to lose him again.  He says, "I'll be back."
     
Scene 2:  On the wharf, in front of the Arcade, Rodney calls to Elliot,
          runs, catches up with him, and talks about Chandler.  Rodney
          catches up with Elliot.  He talks to Elliot about Chandler. 
          Rodney tells Elliot that a lot of people depend on him.  Rodney
          says he doesn't trust Elliot and he doesn't trust himself.
       
Scene 3:  Norman knocks on Rossi's door and comes in to talk about Rita. 
          Rossi has been running tests.  He knows she has a heart
          problem.  He says that Rita will need at least two weeks rest. 
          She is ordered to bed.  She must not get excited for any
          reason.  Rossi says, "You can't touch her for a long time."
       
Scene 4:  Norman goes in to visit Rita in room 116 of the hospital. 
          Norman talks about pink elephants.  Rita says she feels like a
          pin cushion.  Rita says that she is a lot stronger than Rossi
          thinks.  She wants to have a baby.  She says that she wants to
          have Norman's baby.  She says that if something happens to her
          that Ada will take care of the baby.
       
Scene 5:  Chandler goes to Leslie's room at the Colonial Post Inn.  There
          is no number on the door.  He knocks and Leslie reluctantly
          lets him in. Chandler recalls that Leslie wanted him to
          murder Elizabeth Carson.  Chandler insists that Leslie loan
          him $2000 for a trip.  Chandler says he has collateral, his
          farm, and promises to pay him back.  Leslie suggsests that
          Chandler go to the bank.  Chandler talks about the time that
          Leslie wanted him to get rid of his wife, Catherine.  Leslie is
          sarcastic about the value of Chandler's farm.  Leslie says
          he'll let him know.  Chandler leaves.
   
Scene 6:  At the Peyton mansion, Betty starts up the stairs when Martin
          Peyton summons her.  Peyton tells Betty he wants to talk to
          her. He says she looks tired.  Peyton says, "I think it is time
          you returned my will to me, please."  Peyton tells her to ask,
          not steal, if she wants something.  Peyton tells her he is fond
          of her.  He says that heredity is impossible to overcome.
          Peyton says that Brian Colby is the foulest man he ever met. 
          Peyton suggests that Betty tell Steven the truth.  Betty asks
          Peyton if he played with puppets as a child.
       
Scene 7:  Chandler meets up with Elliot on the wharf and Elliot calls to
          him, "Forrest."  Elliots demands to know what happened to his
          daughter, Allison.  A fight ensues with Chandler throwing the
          first punch.

          Elliot has a fight with Chandler on the wharf.

WA:       Jack Chandler pleaded with Leslie Harrington to give him money
          to leave town.  Harrington put him off and tonight Chandler is
          on a collision course.  His feelings for young Rachel Welles
          are now almost uncontrollable.  Cornered by those feelings and
          by the intense pressure of Elliot Carson, Chandler at this
          moment sees only one way out.  Flight.
   
Intro:    At night, Chandler is walking on the wharf.   
   
Scene 1:  On the wharf, Elliot calls to Jack Chandler, but calls him
          Forrest.  He responds.  Elliot says, "You got two names,
          Chandler and Forrest?  They're one and the same, aren't they?" 
          They talk then fight.  Chandler throws a block at Elliot and it
          misses.  Chandler swings an oar.  Elliot takes it away from
          him.  He bangs Chandler against a post and the fight ends. 
          Elliot says, "Tell me where she is.  Tell me or I will kill
          you."  Chandler collapses.
   
Scene 2:  In a darkened examining room, Rossi is looking at Elliot's
          eyes.  Rossi apologizes to Elliot, "I'm sorry you had to wait
          so long for treatment, Elliot, but first we have to treat
          the losers."  Rossi says Elliot has quite a collection of
          splinters.  He says, "I'd say you should be feeling like the
          luckiest fool in the world.  Because Chandler is not in a coma. 
          He has no concussion or any brain damage."  Rossi fusses at
          Elliot for fighting.

Scene 3:  In an examining room in Doctors Hospital, the police interview
          Elliot concerning the fight on the wharf.  They ask him if he
          wishes to file charges.  They tell him since there was no
          weapon used and the injuries were minor that he can charge a
          misdemeanor.  Elliot laughs at the idea of filing a misdemeanor
          complaint.
   
Scene 4:  In room 127 of Doctors Hospital, the police interview Chandler
          concerning the fight on the wharf.  They ask if he wishes to
          make a statement.  Chandler says that Elliot jumped him.  He
          charges that Mr. Carson assaulted him.  He is asked to sign a
          complaint.
           
Scene 5:  Rachel talks to Constance about Allison.  The phone rings and
          Elliot says he's okay.  But he would like her to call Steven
          Cord to come to the jail.
       
Scene 6:  Martin Peyton talks to Betty about her escapade in New York
          City and her theft of his will.  Steven comes in to request
          that Peyton not use Betty as an errand boy for Leslie
          Harrington.  Peyton agrees to comply with that wish.  Peyton
          says that Steven despises him and properly so.  Steven would
          hold the marriage together just to spite Peyton.
 
Scene 7:  Elliot calls Constance to tell her that he is in jail.  He
          wants her to call Steven Cord. 
       
Scene 8:  In their bedroom, Betty talks to Steven who is doing paper
          work.  Steven says that Lee Webber is up to something.  Mary
          knocks and comes in to tell Steven he has a phone call.
       
Scene 9:  In a police station lawyer-client conference room, Steven tells
          Elliot that he will be arraigned in the morning.  That he has
          been charged with assault.  They found splinters matching an
          oar in Elliot hands.  Elliot said he took the oar away from
          Chandler.  He could get one to twelve years in prison for
          felonious assault.
       
Scene 10: Betty goes in to talk to Steven.  Mary knocks and says Elliot
          is on the phone.
         
Scene 11: In the Peyton County Town Hall jail, Elliot is led to his cell. 
          The guard shuts and locks the door.  Elliot is wearing his suit
          and a loose tie.

          Elliot is arraigned for fighting with Jack Chandler.

WA:       Constance Mackenzie has made this walk before.  Years ago she
          visited the old courthouse building to see a man named Elliot
          Carson who had been jailed on a charge of murder.  Then an
          eternity passed.  Elliot Carson served 18 years in the state
          prison.  He was released and returned to her, married her, and
          picked up his life.  Tonight, a bare two years after that new
          life began, Elliot and Jack Chandler met on the wharf and
          fought.  Elliot has been arrested once again, and must somehow
          get through the long night to await tomorrow morning's
          arraignment.
     
Intro:    A jailer is sitting.  Constance comes to visit Elliot in jail.
                                     
Scene 1:  Elliot and Constance hug.  He says he didn't want her to come
          at all.  They talk.  He tells her to go home and get some rest. 
          Elliot talks about Rachel finding Allison's bracelet on the
          floor of Chandler's car.

Scene 2:  Rodney comes to the Carson house to talk with Constance.  She
          is gone so he talks with Rachel.  He tells her that Elliot is
          being arraigned at 10:00.  Rodney says to tell Constance not to
          mention the phone call unless she is directly asked.  Rodney
          doesn't want to testify against Elliot.
       
Scene 3:  Walking on the narrow walkway to the right of the courthouse,
          Steven and Elliot are leaving the police station.  Elliot is
          out on bail.  Elliot asks how much it cost to spring him. 
          Steven says it been taken care of.  They pass in front of a
          parked chevy and the parked Peyton limousine with Lee Webber at
          the wheel.  Steven leaves and Elliot goes in the Clarion.  Eli
          is trying to get out the paper.  Elliot sits and types.  A
          printer comes out and talks with Elliot.  Elliot says he is
          proud of what he did.  He had no other choice.  Eli says,
          "Maybe not."  This scene shows that the Peyton Professional
          building is at least three stories.
     
Scene 4:  Steven looks out his office window.  Lee is polishing the
          limousine.  Steven gets in the back seat.  Steven tells Lee to
          quit following him.  Steven gets out.  Lee tells Steven about
          his surprise birthday party at the mansion.  Steven is 28 years
          old this day.  His twin, Ann Howard, was 28 some months ago at
          the time she plummetted from Sailors' bluff.

Scene 5:  Lee comes to see Sandy at the Cider Barrel.  Charlie tells Lee
          not to give her a hard time.  Lee tells Sandy about the
          surprise birthday party for Steven.  Charlie goes in the back
          room so Lee and Sandy can talk in private.  Sandy likes the job
          except for the customers.  Lee says he might be able to get her
          a gig at the Peyton party as a server.  It pays $25.00.
   
Scene 6:  In the hospital, Rachel visits Chandler in his room, 127. 
          Chandler makes threats against the Carsons.

          Betty poses for her portrait.

WA:       Rachel Welles disappeared from the Carson house this morning
          and sought out Jack Chandler at the hospital.  Chandler,
          bruised and bandaged from his fight with Elliot Carson, ignored
          Rachel's plea that he leave the Carsons alone.  That he leave
          Peyton Place.  Instead Chandler promised only one thing, to
          strike back at the Carsons, and Rachel.

Intro:    Rachel walking slowly across the square.
       
Scene 1:  Rachel goes into the Book Gallery.  Constance fusses at Rachel
          for leaving and visiting Chandler.  Rachel says that she had to
          try to convince Chandler to go away.

Scene 2:  Rossi is talking to Rita in her hospital room.  Norman and Rita
          are observing.  Rossi tells Rita to spend one week in bed.  He
          writes a prescription and puts her on a low-salt diet.  He
          suggests a practical nurse, also.  Rodney takes the
          prescription and leaves.

Scene 3:  Betty, in her marvelous red dress, is posing for the artist,
          Barrett Costa.  Peyton observes.  Peyton receives a telephone
          call from Rodney.  Peyton tells Rodney to come over and they
          will talk about it.
       
Scene 4:  Back at the hospital, Rossi visits Chandler.  Chandler's right
          arm is in a sling.  Rossi is told that Rachel visited him. 
          Chandler brags that in spite of what Dr. Rossi and others had
          done, Rachel still came to visit him.  Chandler complains about
          the pain in his ribs.  Chandler tells Rossi he has filed
          charges against Elliot.  Chandler threatens to tell them about
          Rossi and that young girl, that he buys things for and takes
          care of.
       
Scene 5:  At the boarding house, Elliot is searching Chandler's room as
          Steven Cord comes in.  Steven tells Elliot he can't break into
          Chandler's room.  Elliot found a framed picture of Rachel. 
          Elliot says that Rachel found Allison's bracelet on the floor
          of Chandler's car.

Scene 6:  Leslie comes in Ada Jacks' Tavern and takes his hat off. 
          Leslie asks that the juke box be turned down.  Leslie tells Ada
          how Elliot almost killed Jack Chandler.  Leslie asks her what
          she knows about Chandler.  Ada says she doesn't know much.  Ada
          says that she never knew him as Jack Forrest.  Only as Jack
          Chandler.  Leslie says she knows that Elliot doesn't frequent
          waterfront bars.  Ada asks what Chandler has on Leslie.  Why is
          Leslie so concerned?  What does Chandler have to do with
          Leslie?  Leslie tells her to forget it.
   
Scene 7:  On the street, Leslie tells Elliot that he heard about the
          fight.  Elliot tells Leslie that Chandler has another name,
          Jack Forrest.
     
Scene 8:  At Peyton's request, Rodney comes to talks to Peyton.  Rodney
          wants to know if Peyton will help Norman.  Rita is seriously
          ill and Norman is broke.  Peyton asks Rodney to stay to lunch. 
          Peyton tells Rodney to wait, he'll find Mary.

Scene 9:  Rodney talks to Barrett Costa, the portrait artist.  Costa says
          that he thought Rodney was the husband and that would spoil the
          surprise.  Costa talks briefly and leaves. 

          Betty glides down the stairs in her marvelous red dress and
          speaks with Rodney.

          Rossi wants Rachel sent away to boarding school.
       
WA:       Betty Anderson Cord was once married to Rodney Harrington.  The
          marriage was brief and unsuccessful.  Today, Rodney's
          grandfather, Martin Peyton, begins the crucial phase of his
          master plan to split Steven and Betty, and pair off Rodney and
          Betty in order to maintain a Peyton heritage that he thinks
          will do honor to his name.
       
Intro:    Betty comes down the stairs wearing the gorgeous red dress once
          worn by Catherine Peyton.  Peyton peeks around the corner.

Scene 1:  Rodney talks to Betty about the portrait.  He allows that it
          will cover the bare spot over the fireplace in the livingroom. 
          Rodney says that Steven is now Peyton's favorite grandson. 
          Rodney says that he is very fortunate that she is no longer his
          wife.  Betty tells Rodney that he is a coward.  She says that
          he never fights for anything he wants.  Rodney tells Betty that
          she is greedy.  He leaves.  Peyton talks with Betty for a
          moment.  He asks if Rodney isn't staying for lunch.  He invites
          her to lunch with him.  Betty runs up the stairs.

Scene 2:  The current mill secretary, miss Harris, ushers Chandler in to
          talk with Leslie Harrington.  Chandler says that he just had
          his ribs taped.  Chandler mentions that Leslie picked up the
          hospital tab.  Chandler says that his ribs will mend and that
          he can be back at work in a week or so.  Leslie tells Chandler
          that he won't be needed back.  Leslie gives him a week's
          severance pay.  Leslie tells him to leave town.  Leslie says
          Elliot knows that Chandler's name is Forrest.  Leslie offers
          Chandler a good deal of money to leave town.  Chandler refuses
          it.  Leslie again tells him to get out.  Chandler asks Leslie
          if he can use his name as a reference. 

          Chandler is leaving as Lee Webber storms in.  Lee tells Leslie
          that Martin Peyton wants to see him.  Leslie says he has a
          couple of matters to attend to first.  Leslie tells Lee to wait
          at the front gate.  [The front gate is never seen.  The
          entrance appears to be an ordinary door on an ordinary street.]
     
Scene 3:  Dr. Rossi comes to talk with Constance and Elliot at their
          home.  Elliot tells the doctor that Rachel went to see Chandler
          at the hospital.  Elliot says that he doesn't have any control
          over Rachel because he is not her father.  He has tried to keep
          her away from Chandler.  Rossi thinks she should be sent off to
          school in another town.  Elliot says he wouldn't think of
          sending her away now.
       
Scene 4:  Norman is now driving an old red convertible.  Rita is
          obviously great with child.  Norman carries her up the stairs. 
          and across the threshhold.  He places her on the bed and puts a
          blanket over her legs.  They talk and they kiss.  They talk
          some more.  And they kiss some more.

Scene 5:  At the park, Lee drives up in the limousine tells Leslie this
          is the end of the line.  He helps Leslie out of the car. 
          Leslie asks what Peyton is doing.  Peyton greets Leslie
