Recap
Max choking and gasping for air and collapsing in Shane's arms after learning that Danny and Des lost the money he put on the horses.
No. 24
Des, Danny, Shane and Clive all help Max to the floor. Clive tells Shane to call an ambulance. He then starts examining the prone Max, checking his eyes and his windpipe. Max begins to come round and he demands to know what Clive's doing. Clive tells him to lie back: Shane's calling an ambulance. Max mutters:
MAX: I just had a bit of a turn, that's all
CLIVE: I hope that's all it was, but it could've been your heart.
Max starts trying to sit up, snapping that he doesn't want to go *near* any hospital; he's not getting into any ambulance. Clive tells him curtly:
CLIVE: Then at least go to your doctor; let *him* check you out.
Max retorts that it was just indigestion. He adds that it's hardly surprising after eating one of Madge's pies, and after hearing he's just lost a fortune. Clive snaps at him:
CLIVE: It's stupid to take risks. It could be indigestion – great, you can get medication to stop it – but at least make sure.
MAX (demands): What would *you* know about it?
CLIVE: Enough to know you shouldn't take chances with your health. I'm a doctor!
There are mutterings of surprise from everyone gathered there. Max exclaims in disbelief:
MAX: A doctor?!
CLIVE: Yeah – so I know what I'm talking about.
Danny points out that Clive knew what to do when Max collapsed. Max just splutters at Clive:
MAX: You? A doctor?!
He grabs his throat as he starts gasping for air again.
A street
Helen and Rosemary pull up to the side of a road in Helen's car. They've stopped outside a house, and Rosemary asks if this is it. Helen nods that it is. Rosemary goes to climb out of the car, but Helen doesn't move. Looking surprised, Rosemary asks:
ROSEMARY: Aren't you coming?
HELEN: I think it would be better if you go in alone. I'll wait here for you.
ROSEMARY: But I want you *with* me.
HELEN (sighs): Rosemary, I've tried to talk you out of this; I think you're making a big mistake – but if you insist on going through with it, it's your decision. Don't ask me to be a party to it.
ROSEMARY: Yes it *is* my decision and I thought you'd understand. You never hid the fact that I was adopted. Didn't it ever occur to you that one day I'd want to find my real mother?
HELEN: Not to begin with. As you got older and didn't ask any questions about her, I thought you were happy with Bill and me, not to be interested.
ROSEMARY (cries): Oh mum, I *was* happy – and then when I grew up, I was so busy with the business I just didn't have *time* for anything else. You could say I got out of the *way* of family life – but now it's different: I'm actually thinking about getting married and maybe having a family of my *own*.
HELEN (smiles): That could be the best thing that could happen.
ROSEMARY (sighs): Oh mum, you sound just like Jim: ‘the only way for a woman to be happy is to have a husband'. I thought you were *proud* of what I've achieved.
HELEN: I *am* proud of you, but I don't want to see you turn into a hard, embittered businesswoman.
ROSEMARY (coolly): You know better than that.
HELEN (admits): Yes, that was a stupid thing to say.
Rosemary looks at Helen and then climbs out of the car. Helen reluctantly does likewise. Neither of them notices a woman watching them from the porch of the house they've parked outside. Rosemary says to Helen:
ROSEMARY: I thought you didn't want to be a party to this, mum.
HELEN: I don't – but perhaps I can stop you from being hurt any *more*.
With that, the two of them head towards the house. The woman watches them and then heads inside. A few moments later, she opens the door to Helen and Rosemary and Helen says:
HELEN: Heather, this is Rosemary.
Heather Ambrose invites the two of them in. Rosemary heads into the lounge room. As Helen lingers a few paces behind, Heather says to her tersely that she didn't think she'd be staying. Helen muses:
HELEN: I thought perhaps I'd better.
No. 24
Max snaps at Clive that, for the last time, he's not going to see a doctor. Clive retorts that he doesn't understand how anyone could be so pig-headed against their own health. Des says he'll pop back later to see how Max is, and he heads off. Max glares at Clive and demands:
MAX: What you hanging around for, anyway? Waiting for me to drop dead, eh?
CLIVE: I'm hoping you'll see *sense*. Look, it's not unusual for someone to be scared to see their doctor because they're afraid of the diagnosis.
MAX (indignantly): *Afraid*? Who do you think you're talking to? I can take bad news as well as the next man. I'm not having the wind put up me by some *chook doctor*.
Shane chips in that it wouldn't hurt to have a check-up. Danny adds that Clive seems to know what he's on about. Max sighs and snaps:
MAX: All right. He's a doctor? What's he doing running a gardening business, eh?
CLIVE: I wanted to see the real world, all right?
MAX (shouts): Drop out, you mean. No sense of responsibility yous young people today. It was *my money* put you through university. Pretty damn bad investment if you ask *me*!
Heather Ambrose's house
Heather Ambrose says to Rosemary that she understands she wants to know about her mother. Rosemary nods:
ROSEMARY: Yes, anything you can tell me.
Heather, however, replies that she's always thought it was better not to rake up the past; it's the *present* that matters. Rosemary retorts that it's *her* past, too, and she believes she has a right to know. Accepting this reluctantly, Heather asks Rosemary what she wants her to tell her. Rosemary says she guesses the most important question is: would her mother be willing to meet her? Helen sits next to her daughter, looking uncomfortable. Heather hesitates before saying:
HEATHER: I'm afraid you *can't* meet her, Rosemary. Your mother's *dead*.
ROSEMARY (looking shocked): But she *can't* be—
Helen puts a comforting hand on her daughter's shoulder, but Rosemary glares at her and snaps:
ROSEMARY: No! Don't touch me! You knew all along, didn't you? How could you let me go on hoping?
Coffee Shop
Madge is standing at the counter as Daphne tells her that she'll take as many pies as Madge can bake: the customers *love* them! Des comes in and tells Madge that Max has just had a bit of a scare: he collapsed. Madge, looking worried, asks if he's all right. Des explains that he's all right *now*, but it all started when Danny told Max that he backed the wrong horse... and Shane and Clive were there... and Clive was going on about heart attacks... and Max opened his eyes and he wouldn't have a bar of doctors or hospitals... and when he left, Clive was still arguing with Max! Madge says she'd better get back. Des tells her:
DES: I think you should talk him into having a check-up; he wouldn't let Clive touch him.
MADGE: Well I can't really blame him for *that*.
DES: But Clive said he was a *doctor*.
DAPHNE (looking astonished): You're kidding!
DES (shrugs): That's what he *said*.
Madge says she'd better get home. Daphne tells her she'll give her a lift. As she heads out, Des says quickly:
DES: We haven't finished our talk.
DAPHNE (curtly): This is far more important Des. We can talk *any* time.
Zoe joins Des and remarks that he can't win, can he? Des sighs that he and Daphne just aren't meant to be together.
Heather Ambrose's house
Heather watches Rosemary as she stands in the back garden, looking upset. Rosemary then heads back into the house and apologises to Heather for crying over somebody she didn't even know. Heather says:
HEATHER: Of course, I quite understand. Now, I expect you'll be wanting to get home.
Rosemary, however, retorts:
ROSEMARY: Oh no. No. Now it's even *more* important that you tell me everything you know, seeing as I'll never be able to meet her myself.
Helen says quickly that she thinks it would be better if they *did* go. Rosemary, though, insists:
ROSEMARY: This is what we *came* for.
The then turns to Heather and asks:
ROSEMARY: Where did my parents *meet*?
HEATHER (sitting down, resignedly): At school. They'd been in the same class and they were inseparable right through High School. Your mother was still at school when she fell pregnant. It was a dreadful scandal.
ROSEMARY: So you knew her even *then*?
HEATHER: Oh yes, I knew her when it *happened*. It destroyed her life.
ROSEMARY: Why couldn't they have got married? I mean, wouldn't one of their families have supported them until my father left school?
HEATHER: That was over thirty years ago. People didn't have the same understanding that they have now. Both families were horrified. They were more worried about what the neighbours were going to say than about their children – or the baby.
ROSEMARY: So she *had* to give me away?
HEATHER: She had to do much more than *that*. Her family put her into a home for unmarried mothers and said they never wanted to see her again. They sent some money, but that was where their support ended.
ROSEMARY: My father – I mean, didn't *he* stand by her?
HEATHER: And lose the chance of his tailor-made place in the family business? Not likely.
ROSEMARY (sighs): She must have *hated* me when I was born.
HEATHER: Oh no. No. No, she really loved you – and she desperately wanted to keep you; but with the pittance her family sent, she had to get a job; and how could she look after *you*?
ROSEMARY (sadly): What an awful predicament to be in. At least she had *one* friend.
Heather looks at Rosemary, who clarifies:
ROSEMARY: *You.* I mean *you* obviously stood by her.
Heather nods weakly. Rosemary goes on:
ROSEMARY: The only thing I *don't* understand, then, is why my mother didn't keep in touch. She knew who'd adopted me.
HEATHER: She had to make her own life. Bosses and potential husbands didn't look too kindly on illegitimate children in those days.
ROSEMARY (persists): But I mean, when we both got older--
HEATHER (curtly): And destroy everything she'd *achieved*?
Rosemary stares at Heather and remarks pointedly:
ROSEMARY: You seem to feel very strong about it, Mrs. Ambrose.
HEATHER (quickly): Oh, well of course. I was her best friend.
ROSEMARY: So strongly, in fact, you'd think you'd experienced it *yourself*.
HEATHER: Don't be so ridiculous.
Helen stands up and suggests to Rosemary that they'd better go. Rosemary, however, just stares at Heather and says:
ROSEMARY: That's *it*, isn't it? You *have*. You've been talking about *yourself*. It's *you*. You're my mother.

Recap
Des walking into No. 22 to tell Daphne how he feels about her, only to find her in an embrace with Shane.
No. 22
Daphne pulls away from Shane and stands up and glares at Des. He just stands there and growls at Shane:
DES: You don't waste any time, do you, mate?
Daphne demands of Des:
DAPHNE: Did you come here to see me or Shane? If you've got something to say, say it to me for a change.
Des, however, retorts pointedly:
DES: I don't think this is the time – and I don't think it's really *relevant*.
He turns to leave, but Daphne snaps:
DAPHNE: That's right: make up your own mind. Don't bother discussing anything with the person it might actually concern.
Shane suggests that he'd better go. Daphne, however, tells him to stay where he is. She adds:
DAPHNE: Des hasn't got any claims on my time – and besides, I want you to hear what I've got to say.
Both men stand and listen as Daphne tells Des:
DAPHNE: I thought you'd have realised by now that when I say something, I mean it. There's no point in pursuing things, Des.
DES (looking wounded): But I *love* you...
DAPHNE: And *I loved you*, but you decided that didn't mean anything.
DES (insists): That's not true.
DAPHNE: Then why didn't you ‘phone me after the church fiasco? No, you call your *mother* first.
DES: I *tried* to call you--
DAPHNE: There's no relationship without trust. It's got to be mutual.
DES (glaring at Shane): Yeah, well, *that's* for sure.
DAPHNE (coolly): This hasn't got anything to do with Shane.
DES: You really loved me, you would've given me a second chance – but I was right: you're just like all the rest: I try to explain but you just don't understand.
DAPHNE (retorts): Oh yes I do: you've never grown up, that's *your* problem. It's over, Des; there's no other way to say it.
Des stands there looking heartbroken.
No. 24
Max and Danny are sitting at the kitchen table and Max asks Madge, who's preparing food in the kitchen, how much longer tea's going to be. Madge reminds him that she's preparing something special for him. She puts a plate down in front of him, but Max stares at the food on it and exclaims:
MAX: What's *this* muck?!
Madge explains that it's steamed fish with sesame sauce, pureed spinach and carrots julienne. Max splutters that it's really come to something when a bloke can't even sit down to a good feed of steak and chips! Madge sighs at him that he may decide that he *likes* it. Max goes to pour tomato sauce all over the food, but Madge grabs the bottle and tells him:
MADGE: Oh no, no more commercial products for *you*: too much salt and sugar.
Danny tells Max to eat up, adding that preventative medicine is better than a bypass operation. Max, however, just snaps:
MAX: That con-artist next door's behind all this, eh?
MADGE (sighs): He has no reason to lie, Max.
MAX: Yeah, got kicked out of Med School, I reckon – yeah... for being a quack. A chook quack!
Danny suggests to Max that he think of it like a stockmarket: investing in his future. Max, though, tells Danny that *he* can eat it. With that, he heads for the front door, saying he's going to get some decent tucker: a hamburger with the lot!
No. 28
Des is sitting on the couch, staring at a bunch of flowers that he bought for Daphne, when Zoe comes in. She sees the glum expression on his face but, giving Des a smile, beams:
ZOE: Ah, beautiful, my favourites. How did you know?
She takes the flowers from Des, saying she'll put them in water, but he grabs them back and snaps that they're not for *her*. He then throws them down angrily onto the floor and yells:
DES: What's the use?
Zoe tells him to take a deep breath. Des, though, retorts that he's sick of being used. He tells Zoe:
DES: You and your rotten advice. I wouldn't be *in* this mess, only ‘cos of you.
ZOE (realises): You've been to see Daphne.
DES (bitterly): Yeah. Too right. *Shane* was there.
ZOE: Well that's not *my* fault, is it? There'll be another time. You give in too easily.
DES (angrily): Oh look, don't you start, for--
ZOE: I'm only trying to help.
DES: Yeah, OK, but *don't*, all right?
ZOE: Do you want to tell me what happened?
DES (snaps): Isn't it obvious? She doesn't want me back – not now, not ever.
No. 24
Max is lying back on the couch, reading in the medical book about the function of the heart. He checks his pulse and a relieved smile crosses his face. He then stands up, but appears slightly unsteady on his feet. He picks up a small mirror that's lying nearby and checks his eyes. He then declares to himself:
MAX: Anaemic!
He lies back down on the couch, puts his left hand on his forehead and starts taking deep breaths. Danny and Madge join him and Madge offers him breakfast. Max declines, though, saying he's not very hungry. Madge mutters that it's all that junk food he ate last night. Max, however, murmurs that he can't remember: he's too dizzy. Shane emerges from his bedroom and asks his father if he's crook again. Madge suggests to Max that he take the day off work, but he snaps that he can't afford it. Shane says *he* can take over. With that, Max stands up and snaps furiously:
MAX: I'm not dead *yet*.
He then appears faint and sits back down. Madge tells him to bend his head down to his knees. Max, however, says curtly:
MAX: Stop acting as if I've got one foot in the grave, or I *will* blow a gasket.
Shane insists that he needs a job, and so Max sighs at him that maybe he *can* give him a hand – but *he's* got to keep moving because the body degenerates. Madge tells her brother that she'll pack him a special lunch. Danny adds that he thinks they should call Clive again. Max, however, roars:
MAX: What, *that* mongrel? You trying to *kill* me?!
He then clasps his hand to his chest and takes some more deep breaths. Shane, Danny and Madge stare at him in concern. He tells them coolly:
MAX: All I need is peace and quiet, right?
Ramsay Street
Paul is about to climb into his car in the driveway of No. 26 when Rosemary drives up, parks in the street and gets out. Paul walks over to her and Rosemary tells him that she's glad she caught him. She asks:
ROSEMARY: Have you decided on a secretary yet?
PAUL: No, not yet. I've got some more interviews at nine. I just thought I'd get into the office and go over the applications before they start beating at the door.
ROSEMARY: Hm. Well, actually, you know, there's a person right for the job under our very noses: Zoe Davis.
Paul glances across at No. 28, but doesn't look convinced. Rosemary goes on:
ROSEMARY: Why not? She's attractive, she's intelligent...
PAUL: Intelligence is a matter of definition, I think. I want somebody to *solve* problems, not *create* them.
ROSEMARY: Well *I* think you're selling her a bit short. She's got charm, and that'll work wonders with difficult clients. Seriously, Paul, I'd like you to consider her for the job.
PAUL: Yeah, well, thanks all the same, but I think I'll make my *own* decisions.
ROSEMARY: *I* think she's got all the appropriate qualifications.
PAUL (demands): Are you saying this is fait accompli, because if it is, I think you should reconsid--
ROSEMARY: Paul, take a tip from an old hand: I've done all this before, remember?
PAUL: And *I'm* the one who has to *work* with her, remember?
ROSEMARY: That's why you should pick the best person for the job, not the one you *like* the best.
PAUL: I intend to.
ROSEMARY: Paul...
PAUL: Now look, wait a minute – I know what you're going to say: that I take directions from the top and there's no argument; but unless you let me use my own initiative, then I think you've picked the wrong man for the job.
ROSEMARY: OK, OK, calm down. The man that I want to run my operation here must be *able* to make his own decisions. Now I know he can. I'll leave it up to you!
No. 28
Des is ironing a shirt when Zoe emerges from her bedroom, wearing office attire, and smiles at Des:
ZOE: Well, what do you think? Would you hire me?
DES (muses): I'd be practicing my shorthand and typing, if I was you!
Zoe retorts that her speed's OK – and the interview's just a formality. Des, however, tells her that she and Paul might have a special *business* relationship, but *this* is a whole big deal. Zoe points out that Jim and Rosemary are on her side. She turns to head out. Des, looking surprised, asks what the hurry is: she's got hours yet. Zoe tells him:
ZOE: I've got to start shopping for my new executive wardrobe. I won't have time when I start!
Before she goes, Des tells Zoe that he's sorry for yelling at her before: he just lost control.

Recap
Paul introducing Zoe to his new secretary, Sue Wright.
No. 26
Nikki, Scott, Jim, Helen and Rosemary are sitting around the kitchen table, eating dessert. Jim asks Rosemary if she's going to be flying straight back to the States, but Rosemary says she might stop over in Honolulu. Paul arrives home and Helen tells him that his dinner is in the oven. Rosemary asks him how his day went, and he smiles that it was terrific: he hired a secretary. Jim says:
JIM: I'm sure you won't regret it.
PAUL: So am I!
JIM: Zoe seemed very keen – I bet she's pleased.
Paul, however, retorts:
PAUL: Dad, I didn't hire her.
JIM (looking surprised): Why not?
PAUL: Because I employed somebody *else*.
Jim points out to Paul that Zoe has excellent qualifications – and she needs a job desperately. Paul, though, says coolly that he prefers to keep his personal business *out* of the office. He heads off through to the lounge room. Scott stands up and says he has four assignments to do before tomorrow. Jim, however, tells him to do the washing up. Helen and Rosemary also head through to the lounge room and Nikki tells Scott that she'll give him a hand. Scott just mutters that he'll have to ask Danny to do another assignment for him if he's going to fit everything in.
No. 24
Max is sitting on the couch. He finishes his dinner and Madge tells Danny to bring his father his dessert. Danny offers Max more coffee, but Madge says she thinks a little hot milk would be best. Max asks for a little tot of rum in it! Madge and Danny head into the kitchen and Max immediately pulls out a book from under the cushion of the couch. It has a large picture of a heart on the front. He has a quick look inside, then hides it back under the cushion as Madge returns with dessert. Danny comes in with the warm milk and rum. Max holds out his plate of dessert and pleads for a little dollop of cream to go with it, and Danny heads back through to the kitchen to get it, just as Scott comes in through the back door, holding some sheets of paper. Danny sighs at him:
DANNY: Not *more* homework?! I don't know why you don't just give up school!
SCOTT (bitterly): I feel like it – believe me!
DANNY: You're better off, you know? – as long your old man doesn't charge heaps for rent!
SCOTT: I still want to go to uni, though.
Danny takes the papers from Scott and asks when they're due. Scott tells him that it's the day after tomorrow. He adds that he really appreciates it. Danny heads back through to the lounge room and hands Max a pot of cream. He exclaims in delight:
MAX: Ha-ha! Any fitter and I'd be dangerous!
Madge, looking annoyed, stands up and announces that she's going over to the Robinsons'. As she heads out, she warns Max that he's eating himself into an early grave.
No. 26
Scott and Nikki are doing the washing up, but Nikki complains about the state Scott is leaving the dishes in. Scott mutters at her that he's not in the mood for this, but Nikki just retorts that if he stopped whinging, they'd be finished by now. Jim comes in and warns them both to cut it out. He then tells Scott that he had a word with his Maths tutor today and he's very pleased with Scott's progress. Nikki glares at Scott knowingly. Jim adds gently:
JIM: Look, I know you've been under a lot of pressure lately, but you keep up the good work and you won't have to go to him for long.
He then tells Scott and Nikki that they can finish the washing-up later: Rosemary's about to leave. The three of them head through to the lounge room, where Helen is saying to her daughter:
HELEN: I wish you didn't have to go.
ROSEMARY: I'll be back again soon – I promise.
NIKKI: Before or *after* the wedding?
HELEN: Probably after, Nikki: Gerard wants us to get married as soon as possible.
There's suddenly a knock on the front door and Jim opens it to let Madge in. Rosemary turns to him and says:
ROSEMARY: You know, you should take the plunge again too, Jim.
There's a surprised silence. Jim eventually just says a muted:
JIM: Yeah.
He then asks Scott to help him take Rosemary's bags to the car, and everyone starts saying their goodbyes. Paul joins them and tells Rosemary that he'll hear from her soon. Rosemary replies:
ROSEMARY: You're sure to!
PAUL (coolly): I can handle it.
ROSEMARY (smiles): I know!
Rosemary and Helen then step outside. As they stand by the front door, Helen says softly
HELEN: You *will* be all right, won't you?
ROSEMARY (sincerely): Thanks for *everything*, mum. I love you so much.
HELEN: I love you too.
The two of them share a fond hug and Rosemary turns and goes.
No. 24
Max is sitting on the couch, getting stuck into his dessert, smiling that there's nothing like a bit of cream after a hard day's work! Danny, however, points out that *Shane* did all the hard work! Max then asks Danny what *he's* eating. He points to Danny's plate. Danny tells him that it's bean shoots, and he asks Max if he wants some. Max, however, retorts:
MAX: No fear! Tried to make me eat that stuff in Vietnam!
Danny hesitates before then asking:
DANNY: You feeling all right now, dad?
MAX: Oh yeah, why? [Pauses, then asks suspiciously] All right – what do you want?!
DANNY: Nothing! I was just asking!
MAX: Strewth, if it's not one woman, it's another!
DANNY (blankly): What are you talking about?
MAX: If you want to go and see Nikki, go ahead – I could *do* with some peace and quiet.
DANNY: I won't leave if you don't want me to...
MAX (patting his chest): Fitty as a fiddle!
DANNY: Sure?
MAX: Yeah!
Danny puts down his plate and heads out. When he's gone, Max stands up, heads through to the kitchen and picks up a leaflet from a shelf. He puts it down on the counter, looks at it and then starts exercising! He swings his arms above his head and then down to the ground and behind his back, repeating this several times! He then checks his pulse. He starts running on the spot, but that only lasts a couple of seconds before he puts his hand to his chest, looking worried. He sits down at the kitchen table and takes a deep breath.
Clinic
Sometime later, Max is sitting in the waiting room at a nearby clinic, looking at a pamphlet, when an old woman sits down next to him and comments:
OLD WOMAN: You don't look very well, do you, dear?
MAX (murmurs): You can say *that* again.
OLD WOMAN: Had another attack, have you?
MAX: Pain's something wicked.
OLD WOMAN: My husband was exactly like you.
MAX: Plumber, was he?!
OLD WOMAN: Oh no – he never worked; his heart couldn't stand the strain. I couldn't *tell* you the suffering that man went through. His heart never left him *alone*.
MAX: Didn't the doctors do anything?
OLD WOMAN: *Them*? Huh!
The door to the consulting room opens and a nurse sees a pregnant woman out. Max and the old woman look at the nurse and the old woman goes on:
OLD WOMAN: *They* don't know anything. Poor old Ernie: he started off on pills... little did he know. He could hardly get out of bed. We've got ten children, you know?
MAX: Well I got two boys.
OLD WOMAN: Lucky it's not *more*.
MAX: They're pretty worried.
OLD WOMAN: Of course. *You're* only at the *book* stage. [She indicates the pamphlet Max is holding] You wait until they get their hands on you with their needles. Useless, all of it!
MAX (frowns): But they can do heart transplants and *everything*, these days.
OLD WOMAN: I know. They were going to experiment on my Ernie, but nothing worked.
MAX: Cripes!
OLD WOMAN (distantly): Ernie... he was so brave. A braver man I've never met. He says to me, “Else,” he says, “there's only one thing to do to beat this thing.”
MAX: And what's that?
OLD WOMAN: To forgive them their trespasses those who trespassed against him – including the doctors. He made his peace with the world.
MAX: Strewth!
OLD WOMAN: Did more for him than any doctor did! You take my word for it, dear – and I'm an expert on these things – the doctors can't do anything for you. Only the good Lord can.
MAX: Worked, eh?
OLD WOMAN: Like a charm. Fit as a fiddle when he went!
MAX (mumbles): I'm sorry. I didn't know he'd died
OLD WOMAN: He didn't. He ran off with the next-door neighbour!
The woman then tells Max that she thinks he's next. Max, though, looking suddenly worried, gets up and dashes out. The woman muses:
OLD WOMAN: Oh. No. It's *me*!
No. 26
There's loud music on in the lounge room. Danny and Nikki are sitting on one couch while Helen and Madge sit on the other, Madge telling Helen that Max needs his head read. Helen asks if he's seen a doctor, but Madge retorts that wild horses wouldn't drag him there. The two of them decide to head to the kitchen so they can talk. Jim is working at the desk. Scott emerges from his bedroom and snaps at Danny and Nikki:
SCOTT: Will you turn that down?
He goes and reduces the volume on the stereo. Danny asks what's up. Scott mutters that it's Biology. Nikki suggests to him that he bring his books out and they can help him. Jim calls across to warn that Scott has to learn to stand on his own two feet, and Scott tells Nikki coolly that he can look after himself. Danny, however, insists that Nikki was only trying to help, and he tells Scott to go and get his stuff. Scott heads back to his room. There's suddenly a knock on the front door and Jim opens it to find Max on the step. He comes in and he and Jim sit down on the empty couch. Max smiles at Nikki and Danny:
MAX: How are yous two getting along, eh? [To Nikki] He asked you out, yet?
DANNY: Cut it out, dad!
MAX: Life's too short to beat around the bush, Danny!
Jim offers Max a beer, but he declines. Paul tells Jim that he'll get some for the two of them. He heads through to the kitchen, where Madge and Helen are seated at the table, Madge saying:
MADGE: Charlene's no *better*. Heaven knows what trouble the girl's got herself into.
Paul tells the two women that Max is there, but is acting pretty strange. Madge mutters that nothing would surprise her! Paul heads back through to join Max and Jim, leaving Helen to ask Madge:
HELEN: Why don't you go back home?
MADGE (sadly): I don't really *have* a home anymore. Fred's quite happy with his floozy; he doesn't want *me* around.
HELEN: Charlene's still quite young.
MADGE: Oh, she prefers her father to me, I'm afraid. It's my own fault, really: I was too busy trying to turn ducks into swans.
HELEN: Well, we all have high expectations of our children.
MADGE: You know, I never really approved of one-parent families, but Max and Jim seem to have made a pretty good fist of theirs.
HELEN: Oh, they've made their share of blunders.
MADGE: I wish I had Jim's tolerance. He always seems so kind... understanding...
In the lounge room, Max is smiling:
MAX: There's nothing like a mate, is there?!
PAUL (looking bemused): No, I suppose there's not.
MAX: And it's great to see it passed down, like, from father to son. Gives you a sense of sort of, well, eternity, like, eh?
JIM: I've never looked at it like that!
Helen and Madge come through and Max stands up. Looking surprised, Madge asks him what the matter is. Max retorts that he was just talking about being mates. Madge asks why. Max tells her:
MAX: Well, I mean, Scott couldn't find a better mate than young Danny here.
JIM (points out): They've had their share of scraps.
MAX: Yeah, but Danny can always forgive, see? I reckon we all ought to take a leaf out of *his* book.
DANNY (sighs): Cut it out, dad. You're *embarrassing* me.
MAX: I mean, how many kids would sit home night after night doing a mate's homework, eh?
Scott, who's kneeling at the coffee table, looks down guiltily. Jim glares at Max and demands:
JIM: What did you say?
MAX: We're talking about *mates*.
DANNY (standing up): Shut up, dad. I think we'd better be going.
JIM (coolly): Danny, have you been doing the assignments from the tutor? And don't lie to me.
MAX (warns): Hang on – my son's not a liar.
JIM: No, but *mine* is.
DANNY (quickly): I can explain, Jim.
JIM (retorts): I don't want to hear from *you*.
HELEN (warns): Jim...
MAX (quickly): Why don't we just forgive and forget, eh?
JIM (angrily): Why don't you go home, Max?
Madge grabs Max's arm and hauls him out, muttering that she doesn't know what's got into him. As she, Max and Danny leave, Jim demands of Scott:
JIM: Have you any idea how much those lessons *cost*?
NIKKI: *You're* the one who put the pressure on.
JIM: That's no excuse for cheating.
Jim then snaps at Scott:
JIM: How could you take the credit for other people's work?
NIKKI: Danny was only going to do the work ‘til Scott caught up.
JIM (glaring at Scott): What have you got to say for yourself?
Scott doesn't respond. He just stares down at the coffee table. Jim snaps:
JIM: There's nothing you *can* say, *is there*?
NIKKI: He just couldn't cope with the workload.
PAUL: Dad, you wouldn't listen to him.
JIM (furiously): Well I'm listening *now*. I don't hear anything. [To Scott] You're not going to get very far in this world, lying and cheating. I'm *talking* to you.
Scott looks up suddenly and yells at his father:
SCOTT: Listen: I don't give a damn about *you* or anything else.
With that, he storms off to his bedroom.
Ramsay Street
The next morning, Danny is fixing some equipment to the rack on top of Max's van. When he's finished, he wanders over to where Scott and Nikki are walking up the road towards No. 26 and asks them how it went last night. Nikki tells Danny that Jim gave Scott heaps. She turns to Max and mutters that it was all *his* fault: why did he have to dob on them? Max retorts that it was an accident. He asks if he should go and see Jim to sort things out, but Nikki, Scott and Danny all say ‘No!' in unison! Max tells Scott:
MAX: He only wants what's best for you, mate.
SCOTT (bitterly): Yeah. It's a pity I'm such a failure, isn't it...

Scott crossing out and throwing away his assignment in frustration.
Back garden of No. 26
Jim is watering the back garden when Zoe calls over the fence from No. 28. She's hanging out the washing and Jim remarks that Des has got her working for a living! Zoe, however, mutters that there's no need to rub it in. Jim apologises, saying he'd forgotten about the job with Paul. Zoe suggests brightly that maybe *Clive and Shane* need a new secretary. Jim, however, tells her:
JIM: Zoe, you don't have to limit yourself to Ramsay Street – Paul said your typing and shorthand surprised him.
ZOE (sighs): I know; it's just that... I *know* Paul. I get uptight with strangers. Applying for jobs makes me nervous. Even *thinking* about it makes me nervous!
JIM: If you're fishing for compliments, you can forget it! You know you're intelligent and attractive: you'll find something.
ZOE (smiles): Thanks!
No. 22
Daphne sits down with Shane at the table as he comments that the Robinsons are really laying the heavies on Scott. Daphne, however, points out that Danny didn't exactly help Scott by doing his homework for him. Shane calls across to where Clive is looking through the telephone directory:
SHANE: What do *you* reckon, Clive? You're the doctor!
CLIVE (tersely): *Was* the doctor.
SHANE (laughs): My old man's *still* trying to figure out why they chucked you out!
Daphne comments to Clive that there must be *some* reason why he's not practising. Clive retorts:
CLIVE: For the record, I wasn't *kicked* out, I *walked* out.
He then adds coolly:
CLIVE: Oh – for what it's worth, I've seen kids under less pressure than Scott suffer complete nervous breakdowns. Happy now?
Daniels Corporation
Paul is sitting behind his desk when Sue walks in. He comments to her tersely that the ‘phone was ringing when he came in and it stopped just as he got to it. Sue tells him he should have an answering service. Paul, however, leaps up from his desk and snaps:
PAUL: I don't *need* one if my secretary comes to work on time.
SUE (shrugs): Not *my* fault the trains were late.
PAUL (splutters): It's a quarter past nine. By now you should have the mail done and be into that typing I asked you to do.
SUE (snaps): I don't have to put up with this, Mr. Robinson.
PAUL (aghast): What?
SUE (tersely): You don't want a *secretary*, you want a *slave* – and I think the Equal Opportunities Board and the Workers Harassment Tribunal will be very interested to hear that.
PAUL (gasps): What are you talking about? All I'm asking you to do is the job I'm paying you for.
SUE (sighs): If *that's* your attitude...
With that, Sue walks across to the door. Paul demands:
PAUL: Where do you think *you're* going?
SUE: Get someone *else* to put up with your petty male chauvinism – not that you'll find too many qualified secretaries prepared to do *that*.
No. 26
Helen pours mid-morning tea for Jim and Max at the kitchen table and asks if she should take Scott something. Jim tells her that he'll come out when he's hungry. Helen asks Max if he'd like more cake, but Max replies that he's got to watch the arteries. Jim comments that he supposes the booze is out as well, but Max tells him:
MAX: Oh no, no. No need to overdo it, Jim! Moderation, that's the go – as I was saying to Danny this morning.
HELEN (looking surprised): Danny wanted a *drink*?
MAX: No, no, it's all this business with Rosemary finding her real mum, you know?
Jim asks Max what he means, and Max explains about Danny wanting to find his real dad. Jim says:
JIM: And that upsets you?
MAX: Well sure. I mean, I brought him up. He might be a bit of a pain in the you-know-what at times, but he's still a Ramsay; at least, I've always *treated* him as a Ramsay. I'll *miss* the little tyke.
HELEN (smiling): You can handle it, Max. I'm sure Danny isn't going anywhere.
MAX: No, it's not *him* I'm talking about, Helen, it's *me*: *I'm* the one likely to pop off. I mean, the writing's on the wall; me days are numbered, you know?
JIM (looking surprised): Is that what the *doctor* told you?
MAX: Put it this way: he's made me face the hard facts. He's given me a chance to think about what time I've got left.
HELEN: Don't you think that's being a bit morbid?
MAX: A man's got to face realities, Helen. Gives you something to think about – like old friends, for instance.
Max then says he wants to ask a favour. Jim asks suspiciously what *sort* of favour. Max replies:
MAX: Like I say, I've been made to face the realities – so I've drawn up me last will and testament, Jim. You'd do me proud if you'd be executor of my estate.
No. 26
Sometime later, Shane knocks on the front door of No. 26 and Helen lets him in. He comments that Max said she wanted to see him, and he asks if there's something she wants done. Helen replies that there isn't, but Max told her that he's out of work again. Shane muses that Clive's schemes never seem to last for too long. Helen asks him if he's disappointed. Shane replies:
SHANE: It was great for when I wanted to keep fit, but not as a future. The chauffeuring job was *fantastic*; guess I'm just unlucky, though.
Helen then muses:
HELEN: Suppose you owned your own limousine?
SHANE: Suppose I won the lottery?!
HELEN (chuckles): That isn't very practical!
SHANE: No, I'm saving every cent I can. That's what it amounts to: cents. It'll be about ten years before I even get a deposit.
HELEN (sitting down on the couch): All right, I'll make you a business proposition: *I'll* buy the limousine and *you'll* do the driving. Fifty-fifty as far as the profits are concerned and you'll always have the option of buying me out if you're successful enough.
SHANE (looking astonished): Are you serious?
HELEN: Hm. It was fortunate that I was able to get all the money that Douglas Blake owed me, and it's just sitting there in the bank; and I'd rather invest it in people – *real* people – this time.
SHANE: But the cost – you're talking *thousands*.
HELEN: Yes, well, that's ten thousand for registration, and then there's the monthly lease payments...
SHANE (looking impressed): You *have* gone into it.
HELEN: ...plus on-road costs, setting up the company, wages... It *can* be done.
Shane hesitates before sighing:
SHANE: It's incredibly generous, but I can't accept charity.
Helen, though, insists:
HELEN: It's *not* charity! I'm counting on you to make profits for *both* of us.
SHANE: I'm grateful, Helen, I really am, but I can't accept it.
HELEN: I do have *another* reason. I had an offer to think about, recently: Rosemary wanted me to run the Australian end of her business. Like you, I said to myself: ‘is she just being kind?'
SHANE: Why didn't you take it?
HELEN: Jim and the children. No regrets – but I'll never have that opportunity again; one never does, you know? That's why your decision is so important to me. I want someone to have the kind of chance that *I* had.
Shane hesitates again. He then sits down next to Helen and sighs:
SHANE: Suppose I blow it?
HELEN: I think you're a good risk!
Shane pauses before then saying.
SHANE: I won't let you down.
Helen gives him a grateful hug.

Recap
An intruder entering No. 22, hiding in the pantry and watching Daphne.
No. 22
Daphne is lying asleep on the couch, the book she was reading still in her hands. A pair of feet creeps around the couch behind her and then reaches out and grabs the book. Daphne wakes up – to find Clive standing in front of her. Looking at the book, he smiles:
CLIVE: Oh yes – very intellectual!
Daphne gets up and heads to the kitchen area to make some toasted sandwiches for supper. She gets some ingredients out of the ‘fridge. As she does so, Clive tells her that he's had a terrific idea – a licence to print money; but before he can reveal more, the ‘phone rings and he goes to answer it. He listens and then sighs:
CLIVE: Hell.
He adds quickly:
CLIVE: Sorry, Father! When? ... No, I saw him this afternoon ... Well he seemed a *bit* unsettled, but that was to be expected ... OK, I'll see what I can do. Thanks, Father. Bye bye.
With that, Clive hangs up the ‘phone and turns to Daphne. He tells her that that was Father Barry: Mike shot through. Daphne suggests that he must have gone for a walk or something, but Clive tells her that he's taken his gear, too. He suggests they get out and find him; supper will have to wait. Daphne goes to the pantry and opens the door – to find Mike standing in there, staring out at her. After she gets over her astonishment, she turns and says:
DAPHNE: Clive...
Mike just grins meekly and says:
MIKE: Hi guys!
No. 26
Nikki and Scott are sitting at the kitchen table, doing their homework. Nikki completes a Maths assignment, muttering that it's so painful. She asks Scott how *he's* going, but he retorts:
SCOTT: Don't ask.
Nikki says she feels as though she should be helping him. Scott smiles:
SCOTT: Go for it – it's all yours!
Nikki, however, tells him warily:
NIKKI: I would if I could, you know that; it's just that the marks are going towards...
SCOTT: ...our final assessment. I know, I know. I just can't for the life of me get into this stupid thing.
Nikki suggests to Scott that he should put it aside and go onto something else. Scott, however, tells her that he wants to finish it tonight – then it'll leave him Saturday and Sunday to get on with a few other things. Nikki, standing up, insists:
NIKKI: Just stick with it, Scott. You can do it.
SCOTT (mutters): Yeah, sure. Easy.
With that, Nikki heads off to bed.
No. 22
Mike is sitting on the couch. Clive sits down in the adjacent armchair and says tersely:
CLIVE: OK, you had hassles with the people you were staying with, but what on earth were you doing in the cupboard?
MIKE: I wanted to talk to *you* first; I didn't think Daphne would understand.
CLIVE: And you thought impersonating a broom was going to make it easier?! The thing you've got to understand is, there's only so much other people can do to help you.
MIKE (sighs): I *know*.
CLIVE: So you've got to start doing something to help your*self*.
MIKE (standing up, mutters): I didn't *ask* for their help; they *offered* it – but I don't think they meant it: they were just trying to make themselves feel good.
Daphne joins them and tells Mike to sit down. She then asks:
DAPHNE: What exactly went wrong? Father Barry told me the Burtons were *good* people.
MIKE (snaps): They treated me like a thief.
CLIVE: You don't think, maybe because you're feeling a bit lost, you were seeing things that weren't there?
MIKE (bitterly): Yeah, *lots* of things that weren't there. They had everything locked away. They wouldn't even give me a key to the house. I've never nicked anything in my life.
CLIVE: I suppose they're used to the sort of kids who *do* steal.
MIKE: Yeah, but they knew I wasn't like that.
DAPHNE: So maybe they just needed a few days to get used to the fact that they could trust you?
MIKE: I couldn't even *talk* to them. Every time I walked into a room, they just stopped whatever they were saying. I could never feel comfortable there. Living with *them* would be worse than being at *home*.
CLIVE: Fair enough. I suppose you know what's good for you. You can crash here for the night.
MIKE: Thanks.
CLIVE: But then what?
MIKE: I don't know. I'll think about it in the morning. All I want right now is a good night's sleep.
Daphne looks at Clive in concern.
No. 26
Scott has fallen asleep at the kitchen table, his books still in front of him. Jim arrives home and finds his son there. He puts a hand on his back and says gently:
JIM: Come on, Scott, time for bed.
Scott, however, stirs and murmurs that he can't; he can't afford to; he just needs to give his eyes a rest. Jim, though, tells him:
JIM: Listen. I know I've been giving you a hard time about not studying hard enough, but you're going to the other extreme. You have to learn to pace yourself.
SCOTT: That's what I've been *doing*.
JIM: Really?
SCOTT: Yeah, really. If I get this finished, I'm going to give myself tomorrow morning off. I've got to push myself, dad, otherwise I won't get through.
JIM: Scott, you're a bright student. You'll do well if you just *apply* yourself.
SCOTT: Yeah... I need to do well at Maths, though.
JIM: Yeah, well, you need to give your body and your mind a chance to rest. Now put this away ‘til tomorrow – and that's an order. Bedtime. You're going to sleep-in tomorrow: it's Saturday.
Ramsay Street
The next morning, Jim is packing fishing gear into the back of his car when Zoe wanders over and smiles that she didn't know he was into the ancient art of angling; she thought he'd be into more *active* pastimes! Jim explains that he was up all night trying to figure out a way of getting Scott to relax: fishing came to him in a blinding flash at about 3am. Shane walks past them as Jim tells Zoe that Scott is worrying too much. Zoe nods that it's terrible the pressure they're under; there wasn't *nearly* that much competition when *she* was at school. Jim muses:
JIM: And that would have been, what, four years ago?
ZOE (smiling, shrugs): Well, maybe I wasn't the competitive type!
JIM: I don't think Scott is, either – but he wants to go to university, and the places are limited, so he hasn't got much choice, really.
ZOE: Guess so. Well, I'll have two flathead and one kilo of yabbies, thank you!
JIM: Come with us and catch them yourself!
ZOE (grins): It's a lovely thought, but us working women have things to do on the weekend: washing... cleaning... ironing! It's never ending!
JIM: Fair enough!
ZOE: But if you're going again...
JIM: ...I'll let you know!
With that, Zoe walks off. Jim watches her, a smile on his face.

Recap
Daphne declaring that she and Shane should celebrate their engagement.
No. 24
Several of the neighbours are gathered at No. 24, enjoying glasses of champagne. Max asks Shane when he decided to pop the question. Shane replies that it was only yesterday. Danny chips in to ask if he can be best man! The hubbub in the room quietens down as Max says:
MAX: Hey, listen: Shane, Daphne, I want yous to know: anything you need, come to me, right?
SHANE (looking embarrassed): Calm down, dad!
MAX: No, no, I mean it! Gonna be a big bash. Better than anything *Des* could bung on.
SHANE (glancing at Daphne, warns): Dad...
Clive then proposes a toast to Shane and Daphne, and everyone raises their glasses and offers the happy couple their congratulations. Madge tells Shane that she wants him to know that she has his blessing – but he'll have to put his loose-living past behind him! Zoe suddenly starts blubbing:
ZOE: Oh, I just *love* weddings. I hope you'll both be really happy!
Madge tells Shane that she hopes he realises the responsibilities he's taking on. Danny tells his brother that he'll have to burn his little black book! Daphne says to Shane in surprise:
DAPHNE: Have you *got* one?
SHANE: Actually, I *have*, but I'll burn it; I don't need it anymore.
CLIVE (quickly): Don't burn it, mate; give it to *me*: I could *use* a bit of help!
The neighbours start chattering again and Shane takes the opportunity to pull his father to one side to say:
SHANE: Dad, is it all right if I go and ‘phone mum?
MAX: Oh yeah, yeah – but don't keep her yakking: *I* want to talk to her.
Shane heads off. Max stands there, looking slightly worried – as does Daphne...
No. 28
Des is working under the kitchen sink, becoming increasingly frustrated at his inability to fix the dripping tap. He bangs his head suddenly and snaps:
DES: You rotten--!
A giggling voice suddenly laughs:
VOICE: What are you doing down the trap?
It's Lucy! Des turns to her and asks how long she's been standing there. Lucy grins:
LUCY: I missed you. Did you miss *me*?
DES (‘innocently'): Why – have you been away?
LUCY: You *know* I've been visiting Julie – and I've been away for a long time and I've just come back--
DES (interrupting and laughing): Of *course* I missed you! Did you have a good time?
Des gives Lucy a hug as she enthuses that she went horse-riding and swimming and fishing. She then asks seriously:
LUCY: Is Daphne talking to you again?
DES: Ah yeah, but just to be polite. You know. Well, I suppose you don't know the full story. She's... um... I think she's going to marry Shane.
LUCY (exclaims): *Shane Ramsay*?! Why didn't anyone tell me? Are you gonna let her?
DES: Well I can't *stop* her; I don't have any claim on Daphne anymore.
LUCY (frowns): That's mean. He's supposed to be your *friend*.
DES: Yeah, well, I don't blame Shane *or* Daphne.
LUCY: Well *I am*. It's mean of them *both* to do that to you.
DES: Yeah, well, the best man won.
LUCY: Well *I'm* not talking to *either* of them.
With that, Lucy puts her hands on her hips, determinedly!
No. 24
Shane has finished talking to his mother on the ‘phone, and Daphne tells him that she's so glad Maria was pleased. Shane smiles that of course she was. Max comments that Maria probably wishes she was there *with* them. He adds that *he* wishes she was there. Madge points out that he and Maria always used to *fight*, but Max retorts that it was only now and then; families ought to get together for special occasions. Shane chips in that Max is right. He then adds:
SHANE: And don't you worry about me not taking this seriously, Aunty Madge. There's only one girl in the world for me, and that's Daphne.
MAX (warns): All the same, I hope you were listening to your Aunt Madge. It's time you faced up to your responsibilities. I hope you're gonna work hard; make something of yourself.
SHANE (sighs): Dad...
MAX: All the same, there's a bloke not very far away, not much older than you, branch manager already.
SHANE (retorts wearily): I am *not* in competition with Des Clarke.
MAX: No, but the rate *he's* going he's going to be Federal Treasurer in no time, and I mean, how's Daphne going to feel if you're still driving a taxi?
Daphne points out that she made a choice between Des and Shane and she chose Shane. Shane mutters coolly:
SHANE: I am not a flamin' taxi driver, dad, and even if I was, so what? It's a damn good living.
With that, he marches off to the kitchen. Danny, who's been talking to Maria on the ‘phone, hangs up and follows him. Daphne tells Max and Madge that she and Shane are both taking the marriage seriously. She adds that she doesn't want Shane to be like Des: she's marrying him for what he is; she's not out to change him. Max nods reluctantly.
No. 28
Des is still trying to fix the kitchen tap, as Lucy watches. She tells him:
LUCY: You should get Mr. Ramsay to fix it, because, Des, as a handyman, you score a zero!
DES (rolling his Eyes): Thanks for the vote of confidence, Lucy!
There's suddenly a knock at the front door and Des goes to get it. Lucy follows him. He opens the door to find a woman standing there; it's the woman who picked up her son from the stables. She says to Des:
WOMAN: Hello, Des – it's been a long time.
Des stares at her and recalls:
DES: Anne... No. Annie?
WOMAN (corrects): Andrea.
DES: Andrea! This is incredible! It must be ten years!
ANDREA: Nearly eleven. I thought for a minute you weren't going to *remember* me!
DES: *Remember* you? How could I *forget* you? That, um, hallowe'en party...
ANDREA: *And* the next three months!
DES: Yeah, well, um, come in, Andrea. Andrea...?
ANDREA: Townsend.
DES: Townsend. Still?
ANDREA: Yeah, I'm still me! And you: you haven't changed at all!
Des steps inside and introduces Lucy, who asks:
LUCY: Can you fix a leaking tap? Des can't!
Des suggests to Lucy that she run along home. Bradley walks into the house at that moment and Lucy looks at him and asks Des who he is. Andrea says:
ANDREA: Oh Des: meet Bradley.
Bradley smiles at Des!
No. 28
A short time later, Des, Lucy and Andrea are sitting on the couch and Bradley is standing next to his mother as Des says to her:
DES: So, you saw my relatives in Perth?
ANDREA: Yeah, that's how I found out where you were – and how well you've done for yourself.
DES: I didn't know the news of my fame had spread so *far*! But I'm not the *only* one; *you've* had some changes in your life as well.
Des looks at Bradley and asks:
DES: What sort of things are you interested in, Bradley?
BRADLEY: Women!
A smile crosses Lucy's face! Des just sits there looking discomfited! He then asks Andrea whether this is a holiday for her. Andrea nods that they might stay in town a while – and she was hoping they might spend some time with *him*. She adds quickly that she doesn't want to impose. Des just assures her:
DES: I can't get over *seeing* you after all this time. You're looking *great*!
ANDREA: It's really good to see you, too, Des.
DES: So where you staying?
ANDREA: Oh – I couldn't expect *you* to put us up.
DES: You haven't got anywhere? Well, you're more than welcome to stay *here*.
ANDREA (gushes): Oh how *sweet* of you, Des. Thank you.
DES: I've only got one spare room.
ANDREA: That's all right – we can make up some sort of spare bed for Bradley in *your* room.
Des raises his eyebrows in slight astonishment! Andrea goes on:
ANDREA: You'll enjoy staying here for a little while, won't you, Bradley?
BRADLEY (grumpily): Not unless that tap stops dripping.
Des starts to explain that he was going to fix it when they arrived. He adds that he might just turn it off at the mains and take the tap right off. Andrea suggests that Bradley can help him. Bradley just frowns at Des, though! Lucy leaps up and announces that she's coming too. As the three of them head outside, Andrea remains on the couch, looking pleased with herself...
No. 24
Madge serves mid-morning soft drinks for everyone. Shane tells Max that he doesn't want him getting excited, because he's got to consider his health. Max, however, assures Shane that he'll take it easy because *Madge* is going to do all the work! Clive chips in that, before the wedding, there has to be an engagement party! He suggests they have it on a yacht or a double-decker bus. Max, however, says:
MAX: Clive... if I were you, sunshine, I'd keep well out of it. I mean, after all, it was you and your daft ideas spoiled Daphne's *other* wedding.
Madge asks Shane and Daphne what sort of party they'd like. Daphne says she'd like something unusual; something different. Zoe suggests they have a costume party and all come dressed as famous lovers from history: Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde... Max suggests gruffly:

Madge gets up and sits him down on the sofa and makes him put his feet up while Shane pours him a drink and she goes off to get him a cake that she's baked.
MADGE: You know what they say, Max. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow...
Ramsay Street
Clive and Mike are having a chat in the street. Clive thinks that Mike should sort things out with Nikki, but Mike doesn't want to - he's too nervous to ask her out. Clive says that Mike just needs practice and gets Mike to practice on him(!)
MIKE:(to Clive) Nikki...I'm not doing anything tonight, would you like to go out somewhere?
CLIVE:(in a girly voice) What did you have in mind, Mike, the opera or the ballet?
They both laugh. Mike tries again.
MIKE: Nikki, uh...I would be honoured if you'd let me be your escort for this evening.
CLIVE: Gee, Mike, I don't know...
Clive tells Mike to just say what he feels, but Mike says it's worse than going to the dentist(!)
No.26
Shane is telling Jim and Helen about the joke on Max and they all laugh. Helen gives Nikki a list of things to get at the shop to get her out of the way - when she's gone, Helen tells them that Nikki's mother Laura is arriving tonight as a surprise.
Front garden of No.28
Des is trying to start his lawnmower when Max comes across and tells Des that he's his only friend(!) He reckons none of the family can wait until he's dead! Max threatens to tell everyone that Bradley is his son if he doesn't tell him what's going on. Des is forced to admit that Shane and Danny found out from his doctor that there was nothing wrong with his heart!
No.22
Max storms around to Clive's place to confront him. Max reckons that Clive set him up but Clive points out that he didn't - he just told Max to see a doctor! It's his fault that his family got involved!
No.24
Des has come to confess that he's told Max what's going on. Danny isn't chuffed but Madge reminds him that Des is his boss, so he'd better not say too much! Shane says Des isn't his boss so he calls him week-kneed! Madge doesn't think the rest of the street will be thrilled with Des's behaviour either.
No.26
Max is confronting Jim, but Jim says they were just paying him back in kind! Helen says that Max should have told the truth in the first place, but Max reckons he was enjoying being treated with respect, and not the "local flaming idiot".
HELEN: I've never called you the local flaming idiot.
JIM: Well, certainly not to your face.
Helen tries not to laugh and Max turns on Jim and says the joke's over - Des is the only friend he's got left. Then he storms out.
HELEN: Des? So that's how he found out!
Ramsay Street
Clive is cleaning his car when he sees Nikki coming up the street with groceries, so he send Mike over to chat to her. He chats about exams but can't get up the courage to ask her out. Clive hisses at Mike to help Nikki with her groceries, so he runs after her. They chat again and Mike asks her out tonight - but Nikki is already going out with Danny. She thanks him for asking, though.
When Nikki has gone into the house, Mike goes back to Clive.
CLIVE: How did it go?
MIKE: Danny beat me to it.
No.22
Clive and Mike come in through the back door. Clive tells Mike not to give up after a knock-back - Clive himself has had plenty in his time! He jokes that a lot of girls he's been out with were put off men for life after one date with him!
CLIVE: Boy meets girl...girl gets all giggly...boy asks girl out...
MIKE: Girl says "rack off"?
CLIVE: Sometimes, yes.
He goes to answer the door. It's Jim, come to talk to him about a client of his who is overseas - Jim has offered to hold a 10th birthday party for his daughter. Clive tells him not to worry - he'll organise clowns and games. Jim is a bit overwhelmed by Clive's enthusiasm, but Clive says he'll draw up a quote and let him have it tonight!
No.24
Madge, Danny and Shane are washing up. Max storms in and rants at them, but they rant back that he used his imaginary illness to take advantage of them - he even tried to take Madge's share of the house away! She tells him just to quite while he's ahead. They're curious as to how they got the truth out of Des, but Max isn't talking.
No.26
Nikki is all dressed up to go out to see a band with Danny in town, much to Helen's dismay. She tells Nikki that she has a surprise for her, so Nikki reluctantly agrees to miss the supporting band.
No.24
Shane, Danny and Madge are making up a list for Shane's engagement party. Danny says to put Clive on the list, but Max says Clive isn't welcome, and neither are Uncle Tom and "his brats"! He demands an apology, and reckons he won't speak to them again until he gets one. They don't look very concerned(!) Then he shouts that the engagement party is off!
No.22
Clive tells Des that he's not worried that he told Max, but the rest of the neighbours may not be so generous. Mike asks their advice about how to talk to women. Des reckons that girls don't like to be taken for granted, and advises him to open doors and generally be a gentleman. Clive thinks that's a bit over the top - a girl just wants a guy to be himself. Des and Clive start to argue over which of them has more success with women!
No.24
Danny is on the phone to Nikki and tells her he'll wait until she's ready to go. Madge tells Danny that she has an idea for getting the engagement party back and tells him in a loud voice that they can have it at the Robinsons. Max overhears this in the living room and is incensed. He shouts that no party will have his blessing. Madge and Danny giggle. Max reckons he wants all his property back from them, like the war medals and his swimming cup. Madge and Danny dissolve into giggles.
No.26
Nikki is moaning that she's late for the concert, but just then, her mother Laura arrives. Nikki is shocked.
LAURA: Well, don't just stand there. Haven't you got a kiss for your mum?

MAX: Yeah, too right!
No.26
Laura comes back from jogging and finds Nikki there with Helen and Jim - Nikki has decided not to go to play tennis after all. Nikki asks Laura to go for a swim and she says that'll be fine - Max said they could use his pool. Jim thinks that Helen should be up for the Nobel Peace Prize!
They talk about the engagement party - Helen is going to get a Maid Marian costume for Lucy, but apparently she isn't too chuffed that Bradley couldn't go as Robin Hood! No.26
Nikki apologises to Laura when she gets back from swimming. Laura is not happy and says she has to accept people for how they are. No.24
Danny is moaning that he doesn't have a date for the dance. Max says he's going on his own. Daphne suggests that he and Madge go together - after all, they are the hosts. Max reluctantly says that he might as well - as long as the costume isn't too embarrassing.

In the kitchen, Helen, Madge and Laura come in through the back door and Laura tells them that she's going with Bradley. Helen doesn't think it's a good idea and Madge tells her that Bradley is a devil child(!) Madge also tells them that she's gone on strike because Max said that her place is in the kitchen. Helen doesn't think it's a good idea to leave Max on his own with the organisation, but Madge just smiles and says that's just what she's going to do!
No.24
Chaos reigns in the Ramsay house. Scott, Danny and Shane try to help him as best they can, but Danny says their only hope is Madge coming back! Just then, Madge arrives back and Max greets her gladly. She tells him she'll come back, but there are two conditions - he moves the chairs where he tells her, then makes himself scarce until the party. Also, that he won't argue about the costume she's chosen for him.
MAX: That's not fair!
MADGE: Fair or not, they are my conditions.
Max is silent, but finally relents and asks to see the costume. He grimaces at the Napolean hat. Madge says she thought a bossy emperor was quite appropriate for Max(!)
No.22
Zoe and Daphne are fitting a costume to Mike. Mike is feeling down that he doesn't have as much money as Danny so he can't show Nikki a good time. Just then, Clive comes home with a hired costume for Mike, and he's chuffed!
No.24
Max has cheered up and is wearing his Napolean costume. He wants to know what Shane and Daphne's costumes are.
DANNY: Well...I think they've decided to go as Adam and Eve.
MAX: They what?! That Daphne's behind this! Once a stripper, always a stripper!
He storms off to confront them.
No.22
Shane and Clive are having a quiet beer when Mike storms in. He drags Shane outside.
Outside No.22
Max tells Shane that he has a problem with Daphne and Shane is not impressed. But they're not actually going as Adam and Eve - they're going as Tarzan and Jane. The wind is taken out of Max's sails and he says he'll kill Danny! But it's too late - Shane is not happy.
SHANE: You don't really want me to marry Daphne, do you? Tell me the truth, Dad - you can't forget that Daphne was a stripper.
MAX:(quietly) No, I can't. I mean, how am I supposed to feel, introducing her to me mates, knowing that they've probably seen her starkers!
SHANE: Well you'd better get used to it, Dad. I'm not giving Daphne up for anyone. And you say or do anything to hurt her, it'll be the last you see of me.
MAX: You're putting that girl before this family?!
SHANE: Before an old bigot like you, yes. And don't say I didn't warn you, Dad.
Later at No.24
The party is in full swing and everyone is dressed up. Well, everyone except Des! Clive and Paul vie for the attentions of the same girl.
Danny introduces Cathy Morgan to everyone and Nikki cringes that Laura is being so loud. But everyone seems to really like Laura.
Bradley and Lucy are hanging out and Bradley reckons that he can drive a car. Lucy doesn't believe him, but Bradley says he'll show her!
Des tells Daphne that she looks really nice in her costume.
DAPHNE: Thanks, Des.
DES: Sorry I haven't talked to you all night.
DAPHNE: Thought you were trying to avoid me.
DES: Not you. Just all the people around you.
DAPHNE: I'm glad you came.
Well, we promised we'd keep up appearances in front of them. Daph. I just want to wish you all the best. Good friends are so hard to come by, and I don't want to let this slip through our fingers.
Daphne kisses him on the cheek.
DES: Hey, I can't stay, I have to go.
DAPHNE: Well, if that's what you want.
DES: Good luck.
It's clear that they still have deep feelings for each other.
In the background, Shane is not pleased to see this exchange, but Paul tells him to just marry Daphne before she has second thoughts!
Meanwhile, Jim calls everyone together for a toast and says that Max is going to make a speech. Shane begs him not to as he's rather drunk.
MAX: Listen, if these two pepole are going to be happy together, we'd better call a spade a spade and clear the air. Now, most of youse know, that I didn't want Daphne moving to this street cos she's a stripper, right.
SHANE:(angrily) Dad...
MAX: Street was named after my grandfather, so I felt it was my duty to keep its reputation. Then Daphne moved in...
His words are slurred now and everyone looks rather uncomfortable.
HELEN:(dressed as Queen Victoria) We are not amused!
LAURA: Would it help if I faint?
Max is talking about Des now and then start getting tearful about the lack of happy marriages in Ramsay Street(!)
MAX: Shane meeting Daphne has proved to me, that you can't judge a book by its cover. I mean, she's not ashamed of what she does for a living, so we ought to feel free to talk about it, I mean, she's a lovely girl. (sincerely) The best. And only the best is good enough for my son.
Everyone sighs in relief.
Daphne comes forward and gives Max a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
SHANE: And, I've decided that there's no point in long engagements. Daphne and I are going to get married as soon as we can, aren't we.
Everyone cheers, but Daphne's face is horror-struck.

Recap
Max accepting Daphne into the family
Shane announcing that he and Daphne are soon to be married
Ramsay Street
Helen and Shane are talking business when Shane notices that Des has bumped his car into *his* vehicle. Annoyed, Shane thinks it's because Des is jealous of his engagement to Daphne. Helen doesn't believe Des could be that spiteful, but Shane obviously thinks otherwise.
Number 28
Des is making breakfast with Bradley and Lucy when Shane bursts in to rant at him. Des has no idea what Shane's on about, but goes outside to help him anyway. The kids look guiltily at one another… Methinks they know more than they're letting on.
Ramsay Street
Helen informs Shane that they've lost their first job because of his tardiness, which makes Shane even narkier with Des. Bewildered, Des can't believe Helen and Shane think he's done damage to the car on purpose. Shane and Des get into an argument over Daphne – Shane plays the jealousy card again on Des, but Des insists that he couldn't be happier for the two of them.
Number 22
Clive and Harry Potter… sorry, Daphne (wearing ginormous glasses) are enjoying brekkie when Shane rushes in and does his ranting song and dance again. Clive makes himself scarce while Shane tells Daphne that he wants to get out of Ramsay Street and as far away from her ex as they can. Daphne reminds him that they won't be going anywhere until he and Helen get their business up and running. Her Coffee Shop salary alone won't help them.
SHANE: I didn't know money was more important to you than me.
Disgusted that Shane thinks so little of her, Daphne storms out.
Number 26
Cluey Helen wonders whether Lucy and Bradley know anything about the car incident, but the kids proclaim their innocence… until Helen leaves the room. Lucy thinks that they better own up, especially considering the blue that Shane and Des had, but Bradley doesn't want to get into trouble. He thinks no one will believe it was an accident on their behalf.
Number 22
Zoe brings Clive the costumes from the party so he can return them. While he's out, Zoe and Daphne talk about the bickering between Shane and Des. Daphne thinks Shane is being ridiculous and feels quite sorry for Des. Zoe can't help wondering if things are truly over between Daph and Des. Daphne points out that she wouldn't be engaged to another man if that were true. Des is her past and Shane is her future. But Daph sounds a little smitten when she shows Zoe a crystal bottle Des bought her and Shane.
DAPHNE: He's put a lot of thought into this.
ZOE: Maybe because he still cares.
DAPHNE: Oh come on, Zoe. I know I've made the right decision. Shane and I are going to live happily ever after. Just don't hassle me, okay?
Zoe agrees but doesn't look convinced.
Number 24
Clive the costume collector is on his next stop, just in time to hear more complaining from Shane about Des.
Number 26
Helen reminds Des of the expense of the car, but Des insists he had nothing to do with it. He's sorry Helen and Shane missed out on a business opportunity, but it wasn't his fault. Des then wonders if Helen is having second thoughts about the whole business venture. Helen admits that she is and apologises for taking it out on him. Des wishes that Shane were as reasonable as her: Shane refuses to believe it's over between Des and Daphne. Helen asks if Des *has* completely pushed his feelings aside. Suddenly, the background music of broken hearts soars, and the camera slowly pans in on Des as he assures Helen that he doesn't really love Daphne anymore. Oh the cheese! The cheese and the blatant lies!
Coffee Shop
Daphne's down in the dumps because Clive has been her only customer for the past hour. But when Shane stops by for a feed, she's not entirely happy either. The two eventually kiss and make up, but Daphne admits that it's been hard to get used to Shane's possessive side.
SHANE: It's a new feeling for me too. They way I feel about you I've never felt about anyone before. I just can't stand Des near you.
DAPHNE: All I want I've got near me now.
SHANE: If Clive wasn't here I'd get you to prove it…
Clive immediately stops eavesdropping and buries his nose back in his book.
Number 28
Bradley's mum, Andrea, has had her ‘crack on to Des' plans spoilt by Zoe, who has stopped by for lunch. Whilst Andrea is preoccupied, Zoe hisses to bewildered Des that Andrea is trying to bulldoze him into a relationship. Des insists that Andrea's just an old mate.
DES: I don't mean to sound bitter, but I won't be involved with another woman for a very long time.
Coffee Shop
Helen delightedly informs Shane that they have a regular booking one day a week. I still have no idea what their business is, but good on ‘em. Shane wonders if this foundation is good enough for Daphne so they can start planning their wedding. Daphne's excited for him, but doesn't think one job is quite enough. Helen, however, thinks Daphne needn't wait for the “perfect time”; she should just go for it and enjoy her life with Shane. With Shane, Helen and Clive's expectant faces staring at her, Daphne concedes defeat but doesn't look too happy about it.
Number 28
Andrea is trying to get rid of Zoe, both for lunch and for good. But Zoe stands her ground and informs Andrea that she won't be intimidated. Des hears the end of their bickering and can't keep quiet any longer.
DES: Okay, that's it. I have had enough. Now I manage to get one afternoon off per month, and I don't intend spending it watching you two spit at each other like a couple of alley cats!
Andrea tries to simper her way into Des' good books, but he orders both women out of the kitchen and out of his hair. He doesn't want his already bad day to get worse.
Number 26
Lucy and Bradley are home from school. Young love seems to be blooming because Lucy is feeling quite jealous about the B-Man talking to another girl today (Janine). But Bradley says that they were just talking about Lucy – and the fact that she likes him.
LUCY: (about Janine) What a big mouth… but I do. Do you like me, Bradley?
BRADLEY: Yeah, I suppose so.
LUCY: Janine says you're a spunk.
Bradley looks chuffed and Lucy susses out if Bradley wants to “go around” with her. Bwah! That's so cute and daggy. Bradley supposes he will, which makes Lucy ecstatic.
LUCY: Can I tell Janine I'm your girlfriend?
BRADLEY: No.
LUCY: Why not? I'd only tell her.
BRADLEY: She's the biggest blabbermouth in the school. If you wanna go around with me, you'd better shut up.
Wow. What a catch you've scored yourself there, Luce.
Coffee Shop
Zoe stops by for some takeaway afternoon tea, and fills Daphne and Clive in on how predatory Andrea was towards Des. Daphne looks mortified, “I just can't understand what Des sees in that woman.” Zoe assures her it's just platonic on Des' behalf, but that didn't stop him from yelling at them! Intrigued, Daphne leaves the shop in Clive's capable hands while she nicks down to the bank. Say… doesn't *Des* work at a bank? Fancy that.
Number 28
Bradley asks Des twenty million questions while he's trying to recuperate on the couch. Seeking some peace, Des sends him down the shops to get an ice cream. Daphne passes Bradley on her way in, much to Des' surprise. His surprise grows when he realises that Daphne's specifically there to see him. She wants to let him know that she doesn't believe he pulled the car stunt for a second, and also apologises for Shane's rash behaviour. Daphne thinks that Shane will just have to get used to them remaining friends – she doesn't want to lose him. They then talk about Andrea and how full on she's being.
DAPHNE: Are you in love with her?
DES: In many ways I wish I were.
DAPHNE: You can't make yourself love someone.
DES: Yeah, that's right. And how important is love anyway? There are other reasons to get married.
DAPHNE: Des don't force yourself into a relationship you're not interested in.
DES: I might have to. There's something you don't know about… Um, I found out recently that I've got a son.
Daphne's gobsmacked.
DAPHNE: Bradley?
DES: (confirming) Bradley.

Recap
Des telling Daphne that Bradley is his son.
Number 28
Daphne's stunned, but can't help wondering if Andrea is lying. Des shakes his head: all the facts fit. Bradley's the result of a brief fling he and Andrea had in Perth many moons ago. Daphne gets more upset than she probably should about the whole ordeal and decides to leave. But before she goes, she takes Des' hand and tells him that he'll be a great father, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek and a hug goodbye. As Daphne practically sprints out the door, Des touches his face where she kissed him.
Ramsay Street
Daphne wipes away a stray tear while she forlornly looks back at Des' house. Noticing Mike and Scott approaching, she composes herself long enough to make some polite chit chat with them before scampering away. Cluey Scott reckons that Daphne was just at Des' and that the two of them are still in lurrrv. The boys then banter about some Nikki chick that Mike's keen on.
Daniels Corporation
Jim's swung by to ask Zoe out for a coffee, but Paul can't spare his best worker. Zoe lays into Paul after Jim leaves, reminding him that he doesn't have to ‘look out for her'. But Paul thinks that she should find someone more her own age to go out with, and y'know, someone who isn't his dad! Then he comes out with this gem: “I do not want you mixing business with pleasure in this office, got it?” If only Past Paul knew about Future Paul…
Time lapse to a bit later. Paul's still got the cranky pants on as he snaps at both Zoe and Daphne on his way to a business meeting. Daphne wonders what the deal is as Zoe explains the coffee debacle. They get to talking about Des (of course) and Daphne ‘subtly' asks Zoe how Des gets along with Bradley. Zoe hilariously thinks that Bradley is a “little insect”, but is clueless as to why Des puts up with all of the kid's nonsense. Daphne feigns ignorance.
Number 28
Andrea wants to have a serious chat with Des (who appears to be trying to drink his blues away). She wants Bradley to have a stable home and lays the flirty eyes on Des, “Surely we can make a go of it?” But Des is adamant not to put himself through another relationship so soon. He'll father Bradley as best he can, but he won't be Andrea's sugar daddy, no siree…
Daniels Corporation
Zoe and Daphne finish up their cuppas. Zoe can tell that Des is still in love with Daph, and thinks that the most important thing is to keep him from making any impulsive decisions – especially when it comes to Andrea. Daph leaves and Zoe casually plonks herself on the desk to answer the phone – immediately leaping off when she realises it's Rosemary on the other end (like Rosemary has secret ninja powers and can see her!). Zoe's alarmed to learn that Paul hasn't signed some important papers that have to be filed by tonight. Oh the dilemma!
Coffee Shop
I love the background music, it sounds like it's off an Atari game. Meanwhile, Des has stopped by for a chat with Daphne. As they walk into the kitchen for some privacy, Des admits that Bradley is pretty bratty and wonders if he would've turned out better if he'd had a more stable upbringing. Daphne can tell that Andrea has been niggling in Des' ear and Des admits that she's trying to coax him into a relationship. Daphne warns Des that he can't just marry Andrea based on convenience.
DES: Yeah well, maybe I need more time to establish a bond with him. You always were good at giving advice. I don't know what I'm going to do without you.
DAPHNE: If you want to talk I'm always here.
Des thanks her and asks if she can keep the Bradley news a secret. Daphne thinks it's easier said than done.
DAPHNE: Shane's already suspicious.
SHANE: (conveniently walking in) I've got every right to be, haven't I.
Hee. Gotta love the timing. The scene resumes after an absent ad break, and Shane is no happy camper. He thinks that Des is trying to steal Daphne away. Daph's annoyed but can't tell him what they were really talking about or else she'll betray Des' secret. Sick of the drama, Des departs as Daphne angrily tells Shane that she's allowed to talk to anyone she wants.
SHANE: I'm the man you're going to marry, how about telling me the truth?
DAPHNE: I can trust you, but I can't betray a confidence.
SHANE: Yeah fine, well as long as I know where we stand.
He then bursts out of the kitchen like an angry little mullet man…
Street Somewhere
… but quickly catches up to Des, puffs up his chest, and does the whole ‘stay away from my girl' act. Des pretty much tells him to get over himself. They all live in the same neighbourhood and are bound to run into one another, “it's a fact of life”.
SHANE: You've never given up on her, have you?
DES: (warningly) Shane…
SHANE: You want her back, don't you, Des?
DES: Forget about it, mate. Just forget it!
Des glowers at him before walking off.
Number 26
Zoe is telling Jim about the papers, but it seems that Paul is too far away to contact on his little business jaunt. It's too late in the day for Zoe to find a courier, and she has no car to get herself there – whatever shall she do? Luckily, Jim offers to drive her to Paul himself. What an outstanding idea. Meanwhile, Scott's on the phone to some unnamed person, letting them know that his dad will be out for a while.
Ramsay Street
Mike sees Jim and Zoe get into the car. Jim tells Mike not to let Scott stay on the phone all night. Mike says okay. Yes, it's as riveting as it sounds…
Number 26
Mike delivers Scott the oh so exciting order from Jim, and also picks up the cricket gear he was after. Apparently, Clive had a wild idea to play a winter season, the wacky funster. Scott's desperate for a homework break and suggests they head down to the “rave” at Lassiter's tonight. Oh yeah, I'll bet it'll go right off. Mike isn't so keen and suggests an alternative.
MIKE: We could go down to the Coffee Shop for a while?
SCOTT: (dry) Oh yeah, that sounds really exciting.'
*insert overly dramatic eye-roll from Scott here*
Jim's Car
Zoe's a bit worried about how Paul's going to react when he sees the two of them together. Jim takes a pregnant pause so long it has to be induced – “It's none of his business”. Zoe tells Jim that Paul thinks Jim's too old for her and that she's only after his money. Jim just thinks that Paul's still acting out because of what happened with Terri; Zoe shouldn't worry too much.
ZOE: (smiling) Thanks.
JIM: What did I say?
ZOE: Every time I'm in trouble you seem to be there when I need you.
Coffee Shop
Looks like Mike twisted Scott's arm, as they're both having a drink at the counter. Mike takes Daphne into the kitchen for a quick chat – it seems he's worried about going out tonight when he's got no money. He'd much prefer to use any cash he had on taking Nikki out. Daphne thinks that Nikki's nice and has to chuckle about Mike's angst over everything.
DAPHNE: It's not easy being in love, is it?
Mike queries her odd mood earlier when they bumped into one another on the street, and jokingly tells her about Scott's theory that she's still in love with Des. Daphne stroppily throws down her tea towel and shouts that she's not, dammit! Yeah, way to go convincing him there, Daph. Scott comes to collect Mike for the rave (it's gonna go off, man!) and unwittingly saves her from further embarrassment. Shane stops by and tells Daphne that he's been an idiot. Ready to forgive, Daphne wraps him in a hug.
Remote Building Site
Zoe and Jim arrive and deliver the papers to Paul (who is the only person there). Jim tells him that he should inform Zoe of his plans more carefully next time to save her from anymore unplanned road trips. Jim asks if Zoe is going to ride back with Paul, but she'd prefer the Jim-Mobile. “At least the company would be more pleasant.” Paul gives them one last look before driving off, as Jim and Zoe prepare to leave themselves… but Jim's car won't start. What are the odds, eh?
