Recap
Jim and Zoe stranded in the middle of nowhere
Middle Of Nowhere
Zoe leaps out to have a look under the bonnet and comes to the conclusion that the coil is broken. Jim isn't so sure she's right, but agrees to disagree. They both start their trek to find either a mechanic or a payphone. Good luck walking in those high heels, Zoe.
Number 26
Helen scolds Lucy for feeding Basil at the table. Nikki comes home and announces to Helen, Lucy and her mum that she's scored her very own egg baby to look after for a school project. Excited, Lucy rushes out to the street to tell Bradley all about it while Nikki heads to her room to get changed. Laura laments about the chilly vibes Nikki's still giving her, but Helen promises Laura that everything will eventually sort itself out.
Number 22
Scott's trying to rope Clive and Mike into a night out but isn't having much luck – especially with Mike. It seems he's still cranky about Daphne losing her cool with him earlier. In an attempt to cheer Mike up (and get him the hell out of his “den of tranquillity”), Clive changes his mind and agrees to party with Scott after all. Mike is eventually coaxed into joining them.
Road Somewhere
Zoe and Jim are ambling along when they hear a car approach. Taking charge, Zoe pushes Jim aside and jokingly hitches up her dress to flash some leg at the driver – but the car sails right on by. Resuming their walk, Jim asks how Paul's treating her at work.
ZOE: That son of yours can be a real chauvinist sometimes.
JIM: Well don't let him get away with too much.
ZOE: He seems to hold you accountable for a lot, too.
Jim thinks that he's too old to be held accountable for anything anymore. Zoe believes that Paul is just trying to compete with Jim and assert his dominance.
Number 22
Scott is giving Nikki a heart attack by throwing her egg baby around. He tosses it to Mike to continue the fun, but Mike doesn't want to upset Nikki further, and hands it back to her. Clive begins to wax lyrical over the egg with philosophical hoo-ha, which kind of weirds everyone out. Changing the subject, Scott asks Mike if he's ready to p-a-r-t-y. Mike gives a slight look Nikki's way so that Scott can ask her to accompany them. But it's a school night and Nikki isn't allowed. Scott dashes out to get ready and philosopher Clive edges Nikki's way.
CLIVE: I think the Egyptians embraced the concept the best. The egg. The single unit. The building block of society. The ultimate symbol of fertility…
NIKKI: (cutting him off and looking at Mike) Then again, I could ring mum. That's if you're still keen, we could go out?
MIKE: (chuffed beyond belief) Sure!
They organize to have some Mexican and Nikki puts in a call to her Ma.
Number 26
Laura – who I forgot to mention is wearing a giant pink sack masquerading as a dress, and a frilly clown collar attached – is quite disappointed Nikki won't be home, but lets her go out anyway. Hanging up, Laura tells Helen that it's not quite the reunion she expected with her daughter. Helen wonders if Laura's thought of moving Nikki closer to where she lives, but Laura doesn't want to uproot her when she's so happy here. Helen asks what Laura plans to do now. Smirking, Laura thinks that she'll call up Max and see if tonight's date is still on.
Garage Somewhere
Jim and Zoe have managed to find civilization. Jim tells Zoe that their car will be towed in but it won't be fixed for a while. He also tried to call home but the phone was engaged. It seems as though they've got some time to kill.
Number 26
Lucy has decided to get her very own egg baby to look after because it's way cooler than playing with dolls. Helen tells her to take Basil outside just as Laura struts out in her best gladrags, ready for her date. Scott wants to know who her mystery man is but Laura thinks he should mind his own beeswax. She struts back out and Scott asks Helen if Laura's trying to keep her date a secret from Nikki. But Helen's on the ‘mind your own beeswax' brigade, too. Suddenly, Lucy reappears clutching her throat and unable to breathe properly. Helen shouts at Scott to go and fetch Clive.
Timelapse – Clive is checking over Lucy while Scott rings for an ambulance. But Clive doesn't think they can afford to wait much longer. He needs to do an emergency tracheotomy, stat! Scott helps him lift Lucy on to the table whilst Helen rushes for supplies (which include a biro and a sharp knife – ouch). Clive determines that Lucy was stung on the throat by a bee and prepares to make the incision. Scott comforts Helen, who can't bear to look.
Restaurant Somewhere
Jim is telling Zoe about his wife that passed away, and another woman he almost married but that no one else liked.
ZOE: If I was in love with somebody I wouldn't let anyone stop me doing what I wanted to do.
JIM: (taking this in) Well eventually she made everybody happy by marrying another bloke.
Jim thinks that he better go and try Helen again, nearly bumping into a random extra on the way to the lobby.
Number 26
Paul dashes in to answer the phone, but just misses out. He brings out a manila folder to give to a suited up businessman called Bill. Bill thinks that Paul is very lucky that Zoe found him in time with the important papers of great importance. Annoyed that he's not getting any credit, Paul reminds Bill that he set up the deal in the first place. But Bill's all, ‘whatevs, I'm outtie'. Paul offers to give Bill a lift home since there's nothing going on at his joint, “I wonder where everyone is?” Well, if you had have looked at the makeshift surgical table in the kitchen, you might have bought yourself a clue.
Hospital
Scott is wishing that they knew what was going on, and Helen admits that she's finding the whole thing a little hard to cope with. They both agree how lucky they were to have Clive there, however. Speaking of Clive, the poor guy is looking very shaken over his impromptu surgery. A doctor (who is enunciating as if he's in a Shakespeare play) comes out to tell them that Lucy is okay – the tracheotomy saved her life. Clive looks a little troubled over this for some reasons and runs out without anyone noticing. Dr Shakespeare encourages Helen and Scott to go home and rest; Lucy doth be in ye good hands.
Restaurant Somewhere
Jim informs Zoe that he couldn't get in contact with Helen, but he rang the garage for an update. It *was* the coil but the car won't be fixed now until tomorrow. Of course! Jim wants to send Zoe back home on the bus while he stays the night, but Zoe can't see why they both can't stay the night in Random Town. They head out to find a motel.
Number 26
Scott and Helen arrive home, only to be confronted with the surgical mess on the table. Scott quickly clears it all away while Helen forlornly sits down. They wonder what happened to Clive and Scott comments that Clive seemed a little bit worried about how the tracheotomy went. Helen wonders where on earth Jim could be, just as Paul returns. Scott and Helen relay the Lucy news to him, much to his shock. Paul asks if Jim's still at the hospital, but Helen hasn't seen him all day.
PAUL: I left him over three hours ago; they should be back by now.
HELEN: They? Who was he with?
PAUL: Zoe. I left he and Zoe together…
Paul and Helen get this look on their face like, ‘Ohhh… sprung!'

Recap
A bee stings Lucy and Clive performs a tracheotomy on her
Zoe and Jim are stranded and have to bunk down in a motel for the night
Paul assumes that his dad and Zoe are off on a romantic rendezvous
Number 26
Scott doesn't understand why Paul's getting so uptight about everything; their dad and Zoe could have just stopped off for a meal. Paul scoffs at his brother for being so naпve.
PAUL: Scott, the basic scenario is this. While our sister is desperately ill in hospital, our father is off in the bush chasing a bit of fluff.
HELEN: Paul, don't talk about your father like that.
PAUL: I know Zoe: she's a piranha.
Nikki walks in on a high after her Mexican fiesta with Mike. But her mood is dampened when she finds out what happened to Lucy. Helen chases after Paul (who exited in a strop) while Scott sings Clive's praises to Nikki, “You should have seen him, he was brilliant.”
Number 22
Poor Clive doesn't believe in his own brilliance, however. He thinks things could have easily gone awry, but Daphne believes that Clive is a hero. She doesn't understand why he's wasting his talent by not practicing professionally. Clive explains that the whole doctor thing feels too superficial to him. He doesn't want to be “locked in” to something that is all about money and power.
Number 24
Max and Laura barrel in after their date and interrupt Madge's wild night of… knitting. Laura thinks that Madge is making something special for a fella – and she's right. It's a jumper for Jim Robinson! Good Lord, why is this man pulling all of the chicks? I see now where Paul gets it from… Madge assures Laura that it's “purely platonic” but still wants to keep it a secret from Max. Laura heads home to try and catch Nikki for a chat before she goes to bed.
Number 26 – Motel Lobby
Daphne stops by to check on the family, just as Helen hangs up from the hospital – Lucy's going to be fine. Laura and Max bustle in all, ‘Oh my God, you all look so depressed! Who died?!' Eyeing off her mum with Max, Nikki coldly informs Laura that Lucy nearly did die. Helen takes another phone call, but this time it's from Jim. They swap “where the heck have you been?” banter and Jim puts his foot in it.
JIM: Don't worry about me. I'm in a motel with a very beautiful and charming young lady.
HELEN: (scornful) Well, I'm very pleased for you I'm sure. However, if it isn't too much trouble, I suggest that you get here immediately.
JIM: Helen, is something wrong?
HELEN: Yes, Lucy's ill, she's in hospital. She's asking for you.
JIM: She's what?
HELEN: She's in good care, there's nothing to be alarmed about, but get here!
JIM: (shocked) Of course.
Flash forward to Paul's continued anger that Jim was off gallivanting with Zoe. Max, however, thinks that it's great Jim's found himself a “fountain of youth”. Daphne takes this as her cue to drag Max out and leave the family alone.
Nikki heads off to bed, but not before giving her mum some sass. Laura calls Nikki on her snotty attitude and thinks that she disapproves of her date with Max. But Nikki only retorts that, “you and max and very well suited to each other.”
Number 24
Max has just told Madge about Lucy – and the fact that Jim was out at some “seedy motel” with Zoe. Madge is stunned; Jim is a perfect gentleman and Zoe can be flighty but is a good girl at heart. It can't be true!
MAX: That's what you said about Fred's secretary before he ran off with her.
MADGE: Max Ramsay, that was unfair and uncalled for.
Max tries to apologise but Madge gets fired up and brings up Max's own failed marriage to Maria.
MADGE: You're going to end up a lonely old man, Max Ramsay.
MAX: Oh yeah? What about you, ay? I don't exactly see you rushed off your feet with offers; indecent or otherwise!
MADGE: Maybe not, but at least I still have my dignity.
MAX: What dignity? Running around after Jim Robinson like some lovesick schoolgirl? Ahh, that's what it is.
MADGE: I don't want to hear any more…
MAX: As soon as I mentioned Zoe and Jim you fell to pieces. You're jealous!
MADGE: (upset and angry) I… oh, you disgust me!
Max immediately looks regretful.
Number 26
Jim finally gets home, only to be confronted with angry (and irrational) Paul. Jim calmly informs his son that their car broke down and they were going to spend the night in separate hotel rooms. But Paul doesn't believe a word of it, “I happen to think the whole thing is pretty damn sordid.” Jim wants to talk about it in the morning when they're both feeling more rational.
PAUL: Well I happen to feel perfectly rational now. I also have a rational interest in my family, it's a pity you don't feel the same way… dad.
Jim is stung by Paul's words and broods into commercial break.
Ramsay St – Next Morning
Laura – looking very Violet Beauregarde as a blueberry in her all-blue jogging ensemble – psyches herself up for a brisk jog, all the way from #26… to #24.
Number 24
Max is wondering who in the hell is visiting so early, but is pleased to find Laura on his doorstep. Giving him a kiss, Laura tells him that she just wanted to thank him properly for their date. Max invites her around for dinner that night, but Laura wants to see what Nikki's up to first.
Laura leaves and Max is surprised to find Madge sitting at the kitchen table, unpicking her Jim jumper. He tries to make conversation with her like normal, but she's still holding a grudge from last night's barney.
MAX: What are you doing? Un-knitting?
MADGE: I made a mistake – several in fact.
Number 26
Scott and Nikki have made a gigantic breakfast for Helen to eat in bed, but she's already up and about. Jim joins her as the kids head off to school. Helen apologises for her attitude on the phone yesterday and thinks that Jim should go and see Lucy by himself so she can have quality dad time. Paul (who was just on the phone) snidely informs Jim that his “lady friend” just called and wants to speak to him later. Jim leaves and Helen wants to know why Paul has his bloomers in a bunch: “For heaven's sake Paul, be your age.”
Number 22
Jim stops by to thank Clive for his doctoring skills. I want to thank Clive for only wearing stripy pyjama bottoms with the cuffs rolled up – so cute! Jim wonders if Lucy could have a strong reaction to a bee sting like this again, and Clive thinks that it's possible. Like Daphne, Jim is also wondering why Clive isn't putting his magnificent medico gift to good use.
CLIVE: Gift? You mean the gift of healing? That, pal, is not a gift. That's years of hard yakka day and night.
JIM: All the more reason to persue it.
CLIVE: I suppose most people would see it that way, but it has been noted, sometimes not too friendly, that I'm not like most people.
Jim wants to know if Clive will ever go back to medicine, but Clive knows it's not for him. People get expectations, which only lead to disappointments. No, Clive is quite content to leave it all behind. Jim has to ask – what *does* Clive want from life then?
CLIVE: Just to dance to my own tune. Nothing more, nothing less.
Number 26
Helen finishes up her monster brekkie (where on earth does this tiny woman store food?), just as Madge calls in to chat about her Jim woes. Madge doesn't want the sympathy vote, however, she got hurt but it was her “own stupid fault”. She's come to the conclusion that she's no longer going to wear her heart on her sleeve.
MADGE: I'm going to be more independent, my own woman.
HELEN: Good for you!
Yeah! Destiny's Child ain't got nothing on you, Madge!
Daniels Corporation
Zoe's surprised to find Paul is already at work, but probably wishes he wasn't when he directs his anger her way. Paul demands that she stop seeing his father, but Zoe is having none of his attitude. She'll do what she damn well likes! Paul asks how far things have gone with them, and Zoe admits that it's gone nowhere so far – but she'd like it to. His emotions getting the better of him, Paul grabs Zoe by the arm…
PAUL: I don't know what you're after, but if it's a man you want…
(He lays a big pash on her. Breaking away, Zoe glares at him).
ZOE: Thanks but no thanks. You're really not my type.
Paul looks crushed. Not exactly your finest moment, I have to say Paul.

Recap
Paul kissing Zoe and Zoe not liking it one bit.
Coffee Shop
Clive and Mike are making sandwiches under Daphne's supervision (without wearing gloves or anything – ew, health inspector…), while they chat about Nikki. Mike's still angsting over his lack of money, so Daph and Clive pledge to help him set up a home cooked meal for his next date. The conversation halts as Nikki stops by for a milkshake and Danny comes in to whine and moan about the horrible day he's had.
CLIVE: All well, cheer up. As my Aunty Pearl used to say – she used to work in a liquorice factory – it takes all-sorts!
Paul's Office
Paul takes all the credit on the phone to Rosemary for the VIP (Very Important Papers) mission, while Zoe seethes. She makes her own phone call to Jim in full earshot of Paul to check on Lucy and ask him out to dinner. Paul can't help being smug when Zoe has to postpone the date.
PAUL: My father playing hard to get is he? Or has he just lost interest?
Zoe looks like she wants to do a Russell Crowe and throw the phone at Paul's head.
Number 24
Max is planning on a fun night in with Laura and wonders if Madge will be able to make herself scarce. Madge agrees – she'd rather not see her brother “womanising” – but there's no way she's cooking dinner for them.
MAX: What am I going to feed Laura then?
MADGE: Hamburger with the lot?
Max decides to splash out and order in some expensive gourmet take-away. Sensing an opportunity, Madge declares that if he's flashing his cash around, he can shout *her* dinner and a movie.
Number 26
A bright yellow jumper with hair is trying to engage Nikki in a conversation… oh, hang on. That's just Laura wearing another garish outfit. Anyhoo, Laura is getting very stifled responses from Nikki to all of her questions; she can't even get her daughter to spend a night out with her. Laura tells Nikki that Max has invited her to dinner, but she will happily forgo it if Nikki says the word. But Nikki is more interested in having dinner with Mike. Annoyed, Laura goes off to call Max, “We might as well do what we always do: go our separate ways.” Nikki attempts to look forlorn.
Number 22
Mike thanks Clive for all of his dating tips but still fears he's be a boring date for Nikki. He wishes his parents had better prepared him for important life stuff like this but knows they couldn't care less; especially his Dad. Clive encourages Mike to push all negative thoughts aside and just enjoy the night. And change your jumper, dude; it's butt ugly.
Number 24
Max and Danny have a riveting chat about ties. Madge invites herself along with Danny to the movies to see Eureka Stockade – Max's shout of course – whilst giving her brother some rather gross love advice.
MADGE: If you do feel romance tugging at your heart, don't get heavy; women like the gentle approach.
Caring, sharing bunch aren't they? Max continues to stress because Madge and Danny are taking their sweet time leaving the house.
Number 26
Laura and Nikki are dolled-up for their respective dates, but Laura thinks that Nikki is silly for wanting to take her egg baby along with her. She believes it will show Nikki's immaturity and that Mike will take advantage of her because of it. But Nikki thinks her mum should learn to be a little more trusting. This mum-daughter relationship brought to you by the anti-Gilmore Girls association.
Number 24
Madge and Danny take a peek under all of the fancy gourmet trays that have just been delivered and don't recognize one single dish – apart from the snails. Mmm, yummo. Laura arrives and Max literally pushes his family out of the door. The two then start their date off with a nice cold beer. That will certainly go well with the escargot.
Number 22
Clive escorts Nikki inside, who is pleased to discover that Mike has set a place at the table for her egg baby. Aww. Clive serves them both the soup before he leaves, telling Nikki that Mike has cooked up a storm for her. Making random chitchat, Mike says that Laura must be a good cook, earning stony silence from Nikki in return. Well, this date is going splendidly!
Number 24
Max pops the cork from the champagne up in the air and promptly smashes the light globe above them. Ever resourceful, Laura gets some matches out of her handbag and lights the candles on the table. How romantic. They both share a giggle about Max having no idea of what they're about to eat. Loving that Laura is so down to earth, Max proposes a toast, “to you”. But Laura shakes her head, “Uh-uh. To us.”
Number 22
Not learning from his earlier mistake, Mike brings up Nikki's mum again in conversation. Nikki brattily says that her mum is a no one and doesn't do anything to better herself. Mike implies that Nikki is being a right snob; he'd give anything to have a loving mum like her. But Nikki retorts that he has no idea what her mum is really like. Taking her egg baby, she huffily storms out on their dinner. What a charming child. I wouldn't look too distraught, Mike. The *egg* would be a better date than her.
Number 24
Max and Laura are curled up cosily on the couch being all flirty with one another. They lean in for a smooch just as Madge and Danny return home, killing the moment. Madge and Danny blather on about the movie until they realise they're being mood-killers and offer to leave Max and Laura alone… and apparently ‘alone' means one metre away in the kitchen. I'd say the date is as busted as the kitchen light.
Number 22
Daphne and Clive arrive home to find Mike brooding at the table (has he seriously not moved for the past hour?). They find out that he and Nikki had a row but Mike won't elaborate any further. He stroppily says that Danny is welcome to her (he's been after her for ages) before storming up to bed. Daphne and Clive continue to look confused.

Recap
Mike telling Daphne and Clive what a disastrous date he had with Nikki.
Number 28
Bradley is screeching down the phone to the hospital demanding to talk to Lucy (with no success). Des wonders why Bradley is up when he's supposed to be sick and mutters to Andrea that he thinks Bradley's “illness” is psychosomatic. Meanwhile, Bradley continues to be a pain in the rear, grumbling about having to look after his egg baby. Coming over all paternal, Des says that it's sometimes good for a father to be close to his… egg. But Bradley could care less and secretly plots to make omelettes.
Number 24
Max has been badgered into fixing the kitchen light in the middle of his date. Danny and Madge are buttinskis once again, joining Max and Laura for coffee. Talk soon turns to Nikki.
DANNY: There's nothing wrong with Nikki.
LAURA: Oh yeah, she's first class. A first class little snob!
Preach it sistah! Laura believes that if she sent Nikki to public school instead of boarding school she'd be more accepting of things. Shane arrives home and Laura takes it as her cue to leave the Ramsay clan in peace. Max sarcastically thanks his family for wrecking his evening – he was hoping for more uninterrupted intelligent conversation with his lady! Madge scoffs.
MADGE: ‘Intelligent conversation with a lady you respect'? It's your sister you're talking to you know. You didn't lay out a fortune on gourmet food to finish off the evening with a game of Trivial Pursuit!
Madge has no idea how Shane and Danny have survived this long with Max's influence.
Number 26
Helen wonders if Mike was really in the wrong tonight, but Nikki believes he was. “He's common, just like my mother.” Ooh, slap her. Helen has more restraint, however, and verbally chastises Nikki instead.
HELEN: Poor Laura. The only part of her that's socially acceptable to you is her bank balance.
Nikki snits that her mum sent her to boarding school to be better than her – and now she is – so she doesn't get why everyone is complaining. Laura arrives home just in time to hear this and Nikki quickly skedaddles to bed. Helen tries to talk to Laura but she politely asks Helen not to fight her battles for her.
Later that night – Laura is sitting alone on the couch when Nikki suddenly appears in her pj's and sits across from her. Laura says that Nikki shouldn't be taking things out on Helen and wants to know what the hell is up with all this ‘common' talk.
NIKKI: Your money made me what I am now; you'll just have to live with that.
Demand a refund! Laura concedes that she made a mistake sending Nikki away. Getting tough, Laura orders Nikki to stop treating her like trash or else she'll no longer be attending boarding school. She loves Nikki too much to let her turn into a complete monster.
LAURA: I want you back, Nikki. I want you back.
JACKSON 5: Stop stealing our material, woman!
Nikki squeezes out some tears and actually looks a little remorseful.
Number 28
Des tries to stop Bradley from making annoying growling noises at the breakfast table with his egg, but he won't listen. Trying the paternal act on again, Des encourages Bradley to be gentler with his egg - perhaps even drawing a face on it? Andrea serves up boiled eggs for their grub (how considerate) and Bradley promptly starts to smash his up – growly noises included. Pushing his own egg aside, Des grimly wonders how he ended up with the spawn of Satan as his son.
Number 26
Laura wants to chat more with Nikki about what happened last night, but Nikki coldly informs her mother that there's nothing left to discuss. After she leaves, Laura admits defeat to Helen – she's going to have to take Nikki out of school.
Ramsay Street
Shane and Max greet Nikki who graces them with a short reply before traipsing on. Shane moves off to #26 chat with Helen while Danny appears and quickly chases after the Ice Queen. Seriously, what is drawing these men to her? Her sparkling personality? Danny asks how she is and Nikki informs him that she's leaving school.
Number 26
Helen wishes Laura luck as she makes her way to Nikki's school, passing Shane on her way out. Helen happily informs Shane that they've scored another regular customer for their business. Giving her a kiss on the cheek, Shane says that he better go and brush up on his business skills – he just bought a book to help him. Shane plants another kiss on Helen's cheek before he leaves. You're very smoochy there, young man!
Miss Davidson's Private School For Snobby Cows
(Very impressed that it's an actual location – it looks great). Nikki is chatting with her headmistress (Miss Davidson) and lets her know that she wants to leave the school. The little minx is pretending it's all her own idea because her mother ‘can't afford the fees anymore'. Miss D begrudgingly accepts this – for now – and reminds Nikki that she needs paperwork signed by her Aunt Helen before she goes anywhere.
As Nikki leaves, Miss D walks into her gargantuan office the size of China and buzzes her secretary to get her Helen Daniels' number.
Number 26/Miss Davidson's Private School For Snobby Cows
Around for a cuppa, Madge is despairing over what Helen told her Laura said to Nikki. She thinks ultimatums are never any good. But Helen hopes it will work in Laura's favour.
Answering the phone, Helen's surprised to find Miss Davidson on the end of the line. She's even more surprised to learn that Nikki has been talking about leaving school of her own accord. And to use up the surprise quota of the scene, Miss Davidson is surprised to learn that Laura is in town and will be in to see her any minute. SURPRISES GALORE! Oh the excitement.
Outside in the school grounds, Nikki's two ‘friends' (Patty & Sally) catch up with her and ask what “the Dragon” wanted before. Nikki lies and says that she's leaving this school to attend a more prestigious one in Switzerland. Patty and Sally call Nikki a stuck-up show off as she excuses herself to run off somewhere and mope.
Inside, Laura heads up to Miss Davidson's office as two snobby student extras give her the once over all ‘OMG! MARTIAN!' Miss Davidson invites her in as Laura takes the 10-year trek to her desk. Laura thinks that the school has turned her daughter into a snob and a liar, but Miss D begs to differ. The only time she's heard Nikki tell untruths is when she's talking about her mother. Laura's surprised to hear that Nikki wants to leave and has said that they can no longer afford to attend the school. Laura thinks Nikki's a brat, blah blah blahcakes. This storyline makes me sleepy. And grumpy. And all the other dwarves. Anyhoo, Miss D reckons that Laura and Nikki are in crisis mode and need to sort stuff out quicksticks.
Outside, Nikki screws up a full size photo of her mum (that she just happens to be carrying around) and throws it on the ground. Holding her egg baby she sniffles her way through some tears.
Oh my GOD, we're still at the bloody school. Miss D tells Nikki that her own dad was *gasp* common, but she's proud of her history. She basically intones that Nikki's clever but really needs to cut out all this snobby crap. Miss D informs Nikki that her mother has signed all the release papers but she wants Nikki to take some time to think about her future before she makes the decision final.
Number 26
Eileen is visiting Helen and Madge to fill in time before Des gets home for lunch. They talk about Lucy, then about Clive saving her life, which somehow gets back to Des chat, which then turns into Eileen finding out that Des is living with Andrea and Bradley. Eileen appears not to know who these people are until Madge mentions that Andrea is Des' old friend from Perth, and then she gets this ‘OH NO!' look on her face.
Number 28
Andrea is so busy telling Bradley off for playing with eggs that she doesn't notice Eileen ninja-morphing into the house. Seriously, she appeared from nowhere! Sinister music plays as Eileen glares at her prey.
EILEEN: Just like finding a cockroach under a cupboard.
ANDREA: I was wondering when you would turn up.
Eileen unblinkingly tells Andrea to pack up and leave – obviously getting Des away from her 10 years ago wasn't enough. But Andrea just calmly sits down on the couch and embraces Bradley.
ANDREA: (staring pointedly at Eileen) So much can happen in ten years. One guess, Granny.
Eileen looks a little sick to the stomach.

Recap
Andrea telling Eileen that Bradley is her grandson.
Number 28
Eileen and Andrea swap irritated barbs with one another until Des arrives home to see what the “emergency” is. He discovers that his mother knows about Bradley and she is simply fuming about the whole ordeal. Eileen refuses to accept a word of it, however, until she sees some blood tests! Bradley interrupts the tense atmosphere by peering out the window and screeching that Lucy is home. He also reveals that he was only pretending to be sick because Lucy was.
EILEEN: (looking disdainfully at Des) And this is your child?
Number 26
Jim and Helen bring Lucy inside and straight into Shane's arms for a hug. Her throat is a little sore from where the doctor stitched it up, but other than that she's right as rain. Helen brings Basil inside to be next in line for a hug.
Miss Davidson's Private School For Snobby Cows
Laura and Nikki are having a chat outside as per Miss Davidson's request. Laura reveals that she's going to head back home and leave Nikki to her studies – she doesn't want to compromise Nikki's bright future any further. Nikki doesn't know if she *can* stay now people know about her true background. Ooh, ungrateful sod you are. She agrees to stay at #26 to continue her studies elsewhere but wants to pay her own way from now on. Laura just chuckles and says that Nikki is as stubborn as her father. Laura gives Nikki one last chance to change her mind about school, but Nikki stares off into the distance looking vacant.
Number 28
Eileen is probing Andrea for more information about the date of conception, implying that Andrea could well have slept with someone else at the time. Off Andrea's glare, Eileen instructs Des to drive her home so that she can pick something up.
DES: Mum, I have to get back to work.
EILEEN: After presenting me with a grandson, it's the least you can do.
DES: Hold up, what do you want at the unit?
EILEEN: Proof.
Number 26
Helen and Shane talk shop while Bradley catches up with Lucy and is suitably impressed by her stitches. Laura arrives home and gives Lucy a cuddle before taking Helen into the kitchen for a private word. As Shane departs, Laura just has one thing to ask of her sister: “Are you ashamed of me?” Helen thinks that Laura has eaten crazyflakes for breakfast and assures her that she loves her and is proud of her.
HELEN: There is absolutely nothing I would change about you, ever.
Thankful, Laura tells Helen of her plans to head home. Nikki doesn't like her, but there's no way she's changing who she is. Helen didn't think that running away was Laura's style, but Laura's worried that if she stays Nikki will just end up hating her.
Number 24
Nikki randomly wanders in to have a chat with Madge about her mother. She's all false bravado about looking after herself, and reckons that she doesn't need Laura. Concerned, Madge subtly asks Nikki to stay and have some cake so she can try and talk some sense in to her.
Number 26
Lucy and Bradley laugh at Shane's attempt to draw an Easter Bunny. Helen asks Shane to drive Laura to the airport on his way to their next job. As Laura emerges, packed and ready, Jim takes her arm and wishes that she could stay till at least the weekend. But Laura thinks that the sooner she's gone, the better it will be for Nikki.
Number 28
Back with her proof (one of her old diaries) Eileen asks for the ‘supposed' date of conception – the 14th of December 1974 – then looks it up in her diary. Smirking, Eileen triumphantly reads it out aloud.
EILEEN: ‘Played and won the bridge final. Desmond and his first girlfriend Andrea have gone to a film. I don't like this young lady, she is too sure of herself. But true to his word, Desmond was back at home by 10:30.'
ANDREA: (grinning) While I was waiting at the boat shed.
EILEEN: (thrown) The boat shed?
Des sheepishly reveals that he snuck out to meet Andrea after he said goodnight to his mum. Rattled, Eileen says that she tried to bring up Des to be nothing like his father but has now found out that he's nothing but a carbon copy of him!
DES: Mum, I was only 17 remember? I was just an innocent kid.
ANDREA: Two little virgins together!
EILEEN: Well one of you certainly was.
Eileen doesn't understand why it's taken 10 years for Andrea to tell them. Andrea reminds Eileen that she was never exactly her favourite person – but she came to realise that Bradley needed a father figure, “and Des has just been wonderful”. Stoic, Eileen supposes that they'll just have to soldier on and shoulder the responsibility, but Des says that he doesn't want her help. Bradley is *his* responsibility and it's up to him to make up for all the lost years.
Number 26
Bradley and Lucy chatter about Nikki being ashamed of Laura. Shane's ears prick up when he discovers that Nikki is at #24 and he sets off on a mission.
Number 24
Madge has steered the conversation back around to parents and their children, telling Nikki about her own difficult relationship with her kids.
MADGE: Actually I'm a lot like your mother, Nikki. I wanted the best for Charlene and Henry, but the more I did the worse things got between us.
However, Madge hammers home that whatever happens between a mum and her children, the mum will always love them unconditionally. Shane walks in and tells Nikki that she's got about 10 minutes to say goodbye to Laura before they leave, but Nikki stubbornly stays put. Shane and Madge share a look – talking to Nikki is like talking to a brick wall.
Coffee Shop/Number 28
Eileen has sought out Des and begs him for a few moments of his time. She just wanted him to know that she admires him for sticking up for Andrea and Bradley. Eileen also says (with a plastered on smile) that she's going away for a little while to visit some old friends in Perth. Oh you sneaky woman, I love it.
Later, Des rings Andrea to tell her of his Mum's acceptance, but Andrea is more concerned about Eileen's sudden trip to Perth. Hmm, worried for a good reason there perhaps, Andrea?
Number 24
It's Shane's turn again to try and break through to the little brat… uh, Nikki. “When I was training for the Olympics…” he starts (at which point I was all, ‘Olympics?!'), his dad used to belittle him in front of the other divers. But when his teammates asked if he was ashamed of his father, he didn't know what they were talking about.
SHANE: He was only doing the best for me that he could, and I was lucky because I could see that. I wouldn't change him for anybody else. I love him, faults and all.
Madge returns from saying goodbye to Laura. Nikki's alarmed that he mum now knows where she's hiding out, but Madge wryly thinks that Laura has taken the hint.
SHANE: I hope you've got a good memory, Nikki, ‘cause after the way you've treated your mother I don't think you'll ever see her again.
Nikki sits in silence, food for thought.
Number 26
Helen and Jim hug a tearful Laura goodbye. Shane gets Laura's suitcases ready.
Number 24
Nikki admits to Madge that she never intended to hurt her mum, but Laura shouldn't have sent her away from home in the first place. She always loved it there with her mum. Madge points out that she isn't the one Nikki should be telling this to. But Nikki doesn't think that there's any point.
Ramsay Street
Shane loads up the car while Laura clambers into the back seat. He casts one last look back at #24 as if to will Nikki out, before hopping into the car himself. They slowly drive off down the road.
Number 24
Agitated, Nikki starts to clean up the plates but accidentally smashes her egg baby on the ground. Madge tells her to take a chill pill, “It's just an egg, you can always get another one”. But Nikki can't!!! Because the egg totally represents her relationship with her mum!!! And now she's about to lose her for good!!! Egads!!! Nikki races out the front door.
Ramsay Street
Nikki bolts down the drive and wails at her mum to come back, but the car has already turned the corner. It's your own fault you silly stubborn girl!

Recap
Nikki rushing after Laura as she drives away
Ramsay Street
Nikki sobs into her hands, believing she's lost her only chance to reconcile with her mum. But lo and behold, Shane reverses the car into the street and Laura jumps out to reach for her daughter. In a flurry of surprise and relief, Nikki leaps into her mum's arms for a hug while Shane fondly looks on.
Number 26
Shane bustles in with Laura's suitcases while Jim and Helen curiously stand by – breaking into smiles when Laura and Nikki walk in arm in arm. Shane was the one who saw Nikki just in time in the rear view mirror.
NIKKI: I'm just so ashamed of myself. Nothing else matters, mum, only you.
LAURA: I'll never change, love.
NIKKI: I don't want you to.
Aww, more mummy/daughter hugs. How splendid.
Pacific Bank
Zoe is chatting with Danny at the teller's desk when Des calls her into his office.
Apparently she now qualifies for a Pacific credit card with a $1000 limit. Zoe's stoked but Des reminds her not to go too crazy with it. Danny comes in with paperwork and seems to be on Zoe's side of the spending fence. Before Des can get too serious, Zoe reminds him that he should be chatting to Andrea about money matters, not her.
DANNY: I was reading that it costs $135,000 to raise a child these days.
ZOE: $135,000 for a kid like Bratley? And you're giving me a lecture over a miserable $1000?
DES: It's love that counts, not money.
Zoe's all ‘whatevs' and gives her credit card a loving kiss.
Number 26
Laura and Nikki agree to be more honest with each other in the future – it will certainly save them a lot of heartache.
Lucy, who has been watching this display of newfound honesty, goes into the kitchen and confesses to Jim and Helen that it was her and Bradley who pranged Shane's car; not Des. Lucy scurries off while Jim and Helen share a look.
JIM: (unimpressed) Bradley…
Pacific Bank
Shane has come in to apologise to Des about the whole car debacle and informs him that it was Bradley who did it.
Number 28
Jim has brought Lucy around to face the music with her accomplice, but Bradley is trying to frame her for the whole thing. The parents each believe their own child, so Jim suggests to Andrea that they keep them apart for a while. This sits well with Lucy, who is furious that Bradley suddenly turned on her. After Jim and Lucy depart, Andrea wails on Bradley, yelling at him for putting lives at risk and getting Des into trouble. Bradley doesn't care what Des thinks, but Andrea does because it's hinging on her ‘trap Des into being a daddy' plan. She grounds Bradley and sends him to his room… a decision she may soon live to regret.
Number 26/Daniels Corporation
Jim scowlingly plots to make Bradley's life hell while Laura and Nikki eat their lunch. Answering the phone, Helen is a little taken aback when a “young lady” (aka Zoe) asks to speak to Jim.
Taking the call in the lounge room, Jim makes plans with Zoe for dinner that night – she bought a dress especially for the occasion.
Paul enters the office and happily chats with Zoe while Jim is making reservations with Lassiter's restaurant. Paul somehow gets the wrong message and thinks Zoe might be inviting *him* out for dinner and dancing in her new delightful dinner date dress. His face falls, however, when Jim calls back to confirm the reservation.
PAUL: Looks like the golden girl's got a date, hey?
Pacific Bank/Number 28
Andrea is trying to coerce Des home early because Bradley has locked himself in his room, but Des can't leave for at least another hour.
Danny reckons Des and Andrea sound like an old married couple (God forbid). Des can't believe how stroppy Bradley is acting, but Danny can relate. He kicked up a stink once when his dad forgot to take him camping. Des gets this glazed look on his face… oh, don't do it to yourself, Des. Don't take Bradley camping! No toasted marshmallow in the world is worth all that trouble!
Number 26
Paul arrives home all a la casual asking Jim about Lucy, but he's just bursting to speak his mind about Zoe. He reckons that she's young enough to be Jim's daughter. But Jim points out that she's old enough to know her own mind. Helen walks out and the tension temporarily breaks, but Paul doesn't wait too long to try and stick the knife in again. Annoyed, Jim is set to bite back when Laura and Nikki arrive home from their shopping spree. They're still all happy chappy and Nikki even bought her mum some enormous (hideous) bauble earrings.
Number 28
Andrea is banging Bradley's door down, threatening him with no Easter eggs this year if he keeps this behaviour up. Zoe smugly enjoys the show until Jim arrives for their date. Zoe's dress and bouffant hair is totally OTT ‘80s – love it. Andrea thinks that Jim is there for round two of the Bradley/Lucy debacle, but soon learns that he's Zoe's hot date. Andrea waits until the two of them have left before she resumes pounding on the door and screaming the house down.
Number 26
Brooding on the couch, Paul asks Helen if she's worried about Jim. Helen isn't but Paul thinks that his dad is just making a huge fool of himself.
HELEN: Zoe's an adult, she's grown up.
PAUL: Yeah… my father's going through male menopause.
Lassiter's
Zoe thinks that Jim might be regretting their date, but he couldn't be happier to be there. Smiling, Zoe toasts to her Pacific card (gee, she really adores that thing). If she hadn't have gotten the card, she wouldn't have bought the dress, which means she wouldn't have asked Jim out on a date! Chuckling, Jim clinks his glass with hers.
Number 28
Danny helps Des lug in the camping equipment he lent to him for the father/son bonding extravaganza. Andrea can't believe that Des still wants to do something nice for Bradley after everything he did. Des thinks that a father to son chat over a campfire will sort things out, but Andrea points out that he'll need to get Bradley out of his room first. Putting on his firmest dad voice, Des knocks on the bedroom door.
DES: Bradley, this is your father. Open the door please.
And just like open sesame, it unlocks. Andrea can't believe her eyes. Maybe because Des wasn't screeching at him like a banshee, dude. That could have something to do with it.
Bradley's Room
Bradley asks if Des is going to hit him but Des doesn't see what that would solve.
DES: I tell you one thing; I don't think I could hit you even if I had to.
My how legal times have changed, ay?
Lassiter's
Zoe is talking about not living up to her parents' expectations, but knows that Jim wouldn't be as stubborn with his own kids. Jim says that he tries his best, but sometimes they still clash.
Bradley's Room
Bradley wonders if Andrea can come with them on their camping trip – but only so she can cook for them. How thoughtful. Des reckons it'd be better with just the boys and they can cook fish together. Andrea walks in to check on them and is a bit wary (and possibly jealous) of the camping plan. But Des thinks it'll be fun – even if they get rained on!
Lassiter's Exterior
Jim and Zoe rush over the bridge and duck out of the “lightening” and the “heavy rainstorm” (think of someone flashing a torchlight around and throwing a bucket of water up in the air a la 1960s Dr Who special effects). As Zoe cuddles into Jim for warmth, he cups her face into his hands and leans down to kiss her. A big old pash in the rain, how romantic.

Recap
- Jim and Zoe kissing in the rain
Ext: Lassiter's
Zoe happily snuggles into Jim's chest while he tells her that he needs someone exciting like her in his life. Zoe admits her parents were the exact opposite – that's why she's so spontaneous. They agree to go and get a coffee to get out of the rain.
Number 28
Bradley is watching some ye olden days black and white movie on TV when Andrea shuts it off, wanting a chat. She's changed her mind about his camping trip with Des – Andrea doesn't think Bradley can be trusted to keep his trap shut about their lies. Des comes in from packing the car, but glumly walks back out again to unpack when Andrea delivers the news.
Number 26
Laura wants to know that Nikki's safely enrolled and happy with the decision about her new school, and sends her off to chat with Scott. Laura thanks Helen again for all she's done and wishes she could stay longer but she has to get back to her job.
Nikki and Scott talk shop about Erinsborough High while Paul reads the paper. Danny wanders in and tries to join the conversation but Scott reckons he's out of touch with today's yoof. The topic of Jim and Zoe rears its ugly head and Paul bitterly interjects that his dad is going through a second childhood. Danny leaves (pretending he's busy) and Scott chides Paul over his snarky attitude. But Paul reckons that Scott's beyond naпve if he thinks that their dad and Zoe are “just friends”.
Number 24
Danny walks in and delivers the Jim/Zoe goss to Max and Shane. Max pretends he's not interested in idle gossip but still wants to know all the finer details!
Getting all the info he can, Max soon meanders away to watch the wrestling. Danny whines a bit about Nikki and Scott not playing nice with him, then asks Shane if he's sorted things out with Des yet. Shane's all ‘… there's nothing to sort out'.
Bradley's Room
Des tells Bradley that he's thought of a way they could still go camping. Bradley pretends that he's not interested but can't help himself and follows Des into the lounge room.
Des has set up camp in the middle of the floor, complete with fake grass and plants. Aww. Andrea laughs at them lying in the tent together and compliments Des on his fab idea – but Bradley still looks glum.
Number 24
Shane and Max are engrossed in some blueprints for work and pretty much ignore Danny when he offers to help, calling it “man's work”. Looks like someone's not a girl, not yet a woman… err, well, the male version of that Britney song anyhow.
Number 28
Andrea scoffs the rest of the toasted marshmallows with the boys before turning in for the night. Des asks Bradley what school was like back in WA and Bradley says it was good, but they didn't teach him about the most important subject – girls. Flustered, Des starts up a whole big deep and meaningful chat until he realizes that Bradley's just confused about Lucy. Talk soon turns to love, and you can see Des getting wistful about Daphne.
DES: See Bradley, often times it's not anybody's fault when two people can't work things out together. Sometimes you try as hard as you can but… it just doesn't seem to work out.
BRADLEY: Why are girls different?
DES: Well, there's… biology to start with.
BRADLEY: What's biology?
DES: (stumped) Biology, um, that's how people's bodies are made and… (he checks his watch) Ooh dear, it's that sort of time. We better go to sleep, Bradley.
Bradley smirks.
Number 26
Nikki finishes up a game of chess with Paul before Laura sends her off to bed. But Laura soon decides to join her, and teases Helen about staying up to wait for Jim. Scott and Paul content themselves with more chess while Helen looks at her watch and gives an exasperated glance towards the door.
Number 28
Des has done a better job than he thought with his bedtime bush tale – Bradley is now too scared to sleep! He asks Des if he got scared when he was little, and Des says he did all the time but assures him that nothing ever happened. Satisfied with this, Bradley says “Night Dad”, which pleases Des no end.
Number 24 – Next Morning
Paul arrives looking for Shane and Max unwittingly succeeds in winding him up by continually asking how Jim and Zoe's date went last night.
MAX: She's a very nice piece of merchandise. Very nice piece of merchandise indeed, young Zoe. What do you reckon?
PAUL: (annoyed) I reckon that men of a certain age shouldn't carry on like teenagers.
Paul tells Shane that he's swung by to see the rate card for the hire car – Lassiter's may have some business for him. While Shane's off searching, Danny puts on his broken record of “I'm not a kid” and tells Paul he's being too overly sensitive about Jim and Zoe.
Number 26
Max is saying goodbye to Laura and tells her she's a “neat person” (hee!). He wishes she could stay, and so does Laura, but duty calls. She invites him to stay with her some time, which makes him perk up a bit.
Jim tells Laura he'll wait for her in the car while she says her farewells to the family. Danny tries to be Mr. Sensitive with Nikki and tells her she'll be okay, but Nikki fobs him off for some alone time. Perhaps so she can go and buy another kicky jumpsuit like the one she's already wearing. It's very special.
Nikki asks her mum if she can come to the airport with her, but Laura doesn't like airport goodbyes and gives her daughter a hug before leaving. Goodbye Laura you bold, brassy, plastic-earring wearing lass! You were a good egg.
Number 28
Andrea quietly asks Bradley if he knows what to do. Bradley nods and pretends to be asleep when Des walks back inside. Starting the show, Bradley thrashes about like he's having a nightmare and calls out for “daddy”. Andrea ‘comforts' him and lies to Des that Bradley had nightmares like this all the time before they found him. Des is understandably concerned.
Number 26
Not taking the hint earlier, Danny walks in to ask Nikki's advice on a tie.
DANNY: You've usually got good fashion sense.
Seriously? Dude, she's wearing a JUMPSUIT made out of patterned SQUARES. I know this is 80s land and all, but yeesh.
Anyway, fashion guru Nikki picks the navy blue one just as Scott bustles in and tells Nikki to hurry up. They're late for their catch-up with some of Scott's school mates. Nikki asks Danny if he wants to tag along, but Scott answers for him, saying that he wouldn't fit in. They leave and Danny sadly switches from his young angle to his old angle by asking Paul if he wants to hang out. Surprised, Paul wonders why Danny didn't go “with the kids” and Danny's all, ‘RARRGH! I'm not a kid anymore!'
He storms out leaving Paul confused.

Recap
- Danny getting angry because Paul implied he was a kid
Ramsay Street
Madge attempts some gardening with Max, but he's more interested in telling Danny off for stuffing up the hose. Danny (fresh from his rage with Paul) snots that it wasn't his fault, and angrily tells his dad that he's sick of him taking the blame out on other people (I.e. him).
Shane passes Danny as he does another storm off and asks Max and Madge what's up – but they have no idea either. Shane heads off to see Daphne and Madge vents her concern about Danny's attitude. She thinks that Max could show him a bit more compassion.
Number 22
Clive lets Shane in and is excited about the idea of re-starting their gardening business together. But Shane is more interested in snogging Daphne than talking. Carrying on regardless, Clive tries to get Shane's attention but only manages to get an enthusiastic response from Mike, eager to help them out. Clive and Mike then continue to chat and stare at Shane and Daphne pashing, like, hello? Stare bears much?
Number 26
We play the same old tune – Helen and Paul clash heads over Jim and Zoe, then Shane walks in (after surgically removing himself from Daphne's lips) and they chat about what a sad sack Danny has been.
It turns out, though, that Shane *was* listening to Clive because he asks Helen if it's be alright to take up the gardening offer while still continuing with their chauffeur business. Helen thinks that's fine and Shane's relieved because he needs all the cash he can to speed up this wedding with Daphne. Paul puts a pin in Shane's happy bubble by relaying how difficult it is to save up, which Helen tells him off for later on.
Number 22
Daphne warns Clive that he'd better pull his weight with Shane, just as Shane returns to tell them the good news. Giving Daph a kiss, Shane says that everything will be alright between them and Daph agrees. Oh and here comes another kiss – a kiss of death.
Number 24
Madge gets straight to the point and asks Danny what's eating away at him. He looks set to talk when Max bursts in the front door and he clams up again. Desperate for company, Danny asks if they want to spend time together this weekend.
DANNY: We could go to an art gallery, there's a modernist exhibition on.
MAX: (scoffing) Aww, what? I'd rather watch Madge cut her toenails.
MADGE: Oh, charming.
DANNY: (exasperated) There could be some interesting ones.
MAX: Streuth, half of them could have been done by a chimp with a spray gun!
DANNY: Ugh! You're such a philistine!
Madge asks them if they do anything but fight, and Max reasons that it's better than not talking at all. I don't think Danny quite agrees with that somehow.
Caravan Somewhere
Clive, Shane and Mike drive up and greet Jack – the owner of the land they're about to garden. Clive tells him that “the guys” will get the job done. Shane quietly bails him up about excluding himself from the working side of things, but Clive explains that they should at least pretend there's a boss so they look more professional.
Jack talks the boys through what he wants done to the property and Clive pretends to know what he's talking about. Jack invites them to chat over some tea, but Clive cheekily hands the reigns over to Shane and Mike to they can get started – leaving Clive to enjoy the tea all to himself.
Number 22
Daphne's dressed in a snazzy leotard whilst she does her aerobics, but is soon interrupted by Paul who's looking for Clive. Daphne explains where the boys are and invites Paul in to wait for them. Daph immediately brings up Zoe and Jim (of course) and Paul answers in his usual bitter way. This time though he brings up Terri and how he couldn't see how wrong she was for him because he loved her too much. “If only I hadn't rushed into anything…” Daph asks Paul if he thinks her and Shane are rushing things, but Paul says they'll be okay.
Number 24
Madge tries to cheer Danny up and suggests he invite Nikki and Scott over, but Danny says that he doesn't fit in with them anymore. Madge assures him he's just in a transition phase and he'll soon feel right and hopes that his family aren't making him feel excluded. Danny admits that he misses his mum and feels he can't click with his dad because he isn't his *real* father.
Number 22
Daphne and Paul enjoy and coffee and Daph asks Paul if he's been acting funny because he has feelings for Zoe. But Paul lies and says that he doesn't – he's just worried about the impact it will have on his family.
The boys arrive home and Clive happily states that the “Ramsay and Gibbons” partnership is set to thrive. But Shane tells him to forget the Ramsay part – it was supposed to be a 50/50 deal but Clive didn't keep up his end of the bargain. He sarcastically wishes Clive all the best on his (now solo) venture.
MIKE: You've still got me, Clive!
CLIVE'S FACE: … yay?
Number 26 Backyard
Madge is over for tea and advice with Helen to discuss her Danny dramas. Madge feels terrible for not realizing that Danny was feeling so distant. Helen wonders if Madge should talk to Max about it, but Madge doesn't want to betray Danny's confidence. Helen then has a brainwave and says that Madge should organize a family get together. Madge likes her thinking – and knows that food will be the key.
Number 24
Clive tries to say sorry to Shane, but isn't doing a very good job of it. Shane eventually caves and tell Clive that he'll try the partnership one more time. Sucker.
Clive leaves and Madge calls Shane and Max together for a family meeting. She explains she's cracked the Danny mystery – he's just feeling lonely and needs some company. Madge reckons they should all go out for dinner. Max isn't too keen but when Danny walks out they all tell him that Max has offered to shout them a meal. Cracking his first genuine smile in ages, Danny says that he knows just the place to go…
Japanese Restaurant
It's one of those places where you sit on cushions at a small table and raw food is the delicacy – right up Max's alley. Not. Daphne has joined them, and they all try and cajole Max into keeping his complaints to himself for Danny's sake. Danny offers his dad some squid and Max practically chokes it down with a forced grin.
Number 26
Helen sees Paul all scowly (just for a change) and tells him that he's just going to have to deal with the Jim and Zoe thing. Paul sneakily says that Lucy feels threatened because their dad is off behaving like a teenager when he should be with his family.
PAUL: You mark my words. This little affair of his is going to rip this family apart… if it hasn't already.
Japanese Restaurant
The family has finished up their dinner and the night looks to be a success – until Max gets the bill. All $160 worth of it. He kicks up a massive stink, much to the embarrassment of everyone else. Shane stokes the fire by slyly telling his dad not to forget the tip.
MAX: (begrudgingly paying the waiter) No way! There you go, 160 bucks exactly. And the only tip you'll get from me is lower your prices or go out of business!
Danny takes huge offence with his dad's rude behavior and walks out. Daphne and Shane give Max the stare of shame while Madge yells at him for being an oaf.

Recap
- Max making a fuss in the Japanese restaurant causing Danny to storm out
Number 24 – Next Morning
Madge wishes the boys a happy Easter, but Danny is still surly with his dad after last night. Shane tries to keep things normal by announcing that he's going to make amends with Des.
Number 28
Des is packing up the camping gear in the lounge room while Andrea tells him what a fabulous job he's doing with Bradley. She mildly panics when Des queries her on something Bradley said (he claimed he had a pony back in Perth when Andrea already told Des they used to be poor), but she brushes it off as fanciful thinking on Bradley's behalf.
Number 22
Zoe, wearing quite possibly the gaudiest fluro orange/red overalls on earth, delivers Daphne an Easter egg. Daphne can't help dredging up the Jim saga and wonders if Zoe's making the right choice dating her boss's father. But Zoe maintains that she knows how to keep her personal and professional lives separate.
ZOE: I've grown up a lot lately, Daph. I think I can handle it.
(Daphne raises her eyebrows in disbelief)
ZOE: Well I reckon I'm entitled to the chance to find out anyway!
Number 28
Des is flicking through a ‘Where Did I Come From?' book, but promptly shoves it under a couch cushion when Shane pops in. Des is impressed that Shane's calling a truce and invites him to stay for a beer. Embarrassment soon washes over Des' face when Shane finds the book, and he unconvincingly passes it off as Andrea's.
Number 24
Max and Danny bicker some more about how different their cultural tastes are until Madge intervenes and tells them to stop fighting. But the boys defiantly tell her that they're merely having a discussion and go outside to continue it!
Number 24 Backyard
Max challenges Daphne and Shane on whether they'd rather eat raw food or “Aussie tucker”, but you can barely hear them for the bird squawking in the background. How about you put that on the BBQ instead? Madge asks Daphne how her wedding plans are coming along, and Daphne admits that she's hit some money struggles. Max does his good deed for the year by announcing he's going to pay for everything. Daphne's delighted until Max unthinkingly puts his foot in it by saying that Daph can wear her old dress (from her non-wedding with Des) to save some cash!
Number 28 Backyard
Andrea scowls when Zoe invites herself to have lunch with her and Des. Zoe can't wait to stick around to find out how Andrea manages to blackmail Des so well – to which Andrea darkly mutters “You're a bitch” under her breath! Seriously! Walking outside, exasperated Des realizes the women are arguing (for a change) and wonders why they can't be civil to one another. Over it, Zoe leaves them to it and heads out for lunch. Des is probably wishing Zoe stayed, however, when he correctly guesses that Andrea wants to talk about marriage. Standing his ground, Des states that he won't be pressured into anything and that he'll make up his mind about it in his own time.
Number 24 Garage
Max is searching around for the BBQ tongs when Shane joins him and berates him for bringing up bad memories for Daphne. He doesn't think his dad *should* pay for the wedding after all, and wants him to go back out and apologize. Max duly complies, “Anything for a quiet life.”
Ramsay Street
Des is tinkering away in his car, angrily muttering into the engine when he catches Daphne smirking at him. They share some polite chit chat before Des confesses that he's just trying to escape Andrea and her marriage talk. Des grimly admits that he probably does owe it to Bradley, but Daphne wonders what Des owes to himself. Des replies that he doesn't really love Andrea, and Daphne thinks that he should tell her that… not that it's any of her business of course.
Number 24 Garage
Danny and Shane bond over their dysfunctional dad. Shane hates the way Max speaks to Daphne, but Danny reckons that she's a cluey lady and would know not to take him seriously. Grateful, Shane tells him it's good to see him smiling again and that he can come to him for a chat anytime he needs to. Danny's a bit put out that Madge has been discussing his problems, but Shane says it's only because she cares about him.
Ramsay Street
Zoe is helping Des fix the spark plug in his car, much to Des' wounded male ego. As everyone is prone to do these days, Des puts his 2c worth in about the ‘Jim thing' because he wants to look out for Zoe. Zoe slyly says that she wants to do the same for him and wonders why he just doesn't ask Andrea to leave! But it looks like Des can dish the advice but can't take it as he growls at Zoe to leave him alone.
Number 28
Andrea leaps up from spying out the front window and lays into Des for talking to Zoe. She then spits further vitriol by saying that Zoe's “immoral” relationship with Jim could have a bad effect on Bradley!
DES: (angry) Don't push it, Andrea, there's a limit.
ANDREA: I just want what's best.
DES: Yeah, best for who?
Number 24
Zoe and Madge are gossiping about Andrea over a cuppa when Max barges in and is his usual insensitive self re: Jim and Zoe's relationship. Upset, Zoe asks Madge why everyone is making it out to be sordid when it's not. Madge sympathises and says that in a relationship where there's a considerable age difference, people are bound to talk. Zoe wishes Jim's family could see how happy she makes him, but Madge wisely concurs that they might feel as though she's taking him away from them.
Number 22
Daphne tells Shane she's not worried about Max… but thinks they should hold off the wedding for a little while. She's just concerned about money (or lack thereof at the moment), and wants them to get on their feet a little to ensure they're going to last the distance.
SHANE: (quietly) Are you sure that's all it is behind it?
DAPHNE: ‘course I am.
SHANE: (smiling) That's all that matters then. Don't look so worried, we'll work it out.
Number 26
Andrea frets because Bradley isn't back from his picnic with the neighbours and it's getting late. She then tries to blackmail Des into feeling guilty by saying junk like, “At least *one* of us should be worried about him”. Des says that she isn't being fair but Andrea snits that Bradley will never regard him as a father until they're married.
DES: Sorry Andrea, I can't make that commitment.
ANDREA: Then I'll just have to find someone who will.
DES: What?
ANDREA: I owe it to Bradley. Either you marry me and accept Bradley as your legal son, or I walk out of here and you'll never see him again.

Recap
- Andrea giving Des an ultimatum about marrying her.
Number 26
The Robinson/Daniels clan (plus Nikki) return home from their Easter picnic and bicker good-naturedly about their 3-legged races. Jim slips out for some “alone time” causing Paul to become Mr. Bitter when he realizes where Jim must have gone.
Number 28
Des and Andrea seem to be ignoring ‘the ultimatum' for now, with Andrea more concerned about directing catty comments Zoe's way (who is dressed up for a date). Jim arrives to escort her away, but not before Andrea manages to sink her claws into Des by suggesting that Jim is a better father than him. Subtle as a sledgehammer that woman.
Number 22
Mike and Clive (dressed in a bedraggled bunny costume) arrive home and bag out Bratley to Daphne.
CLIVE: (holds up the bunny head) You see this? Bradley. And this (hold up a torn off tail), you will never guess.
DAPHNE: (wry) Not sweet little Bradley?
CLIVE: No, not sweet little Bradley. Monstrous, obnoxious, willful little Bradley.
DAPHNE: Sit down and I'll get you a carrot!
CLIVE: Daphne, no more rabbit jokes okay?
DAPHNE: Sorry I'll stop rabbiting on.
Daphne actually gets a carrot out the fridge for Clive (!), and asks Mike if Nikki spoke to him today. Mike reveals that she avoided him all day – not that he's bothered at all of course. But things soon turn around when Nikki calls in to apologize for acting like such a cowbag. She extends the hand of friendship to Mike, which Mike reluctantly accepts (wanting oh so much more than just ‘friendship' from her).
Number 26
Des has stopped in to see Helen for tea and sympathy, and confesses to her that Bradley is his son. Helen isn't at all surprised; she guessed as much. Des glumly fills her in about Andrea's marriage plans, but Helen can tell that he doesn't love her. He's still too hung up on Daphne. Des asks what he should tell Andrea, but Helen is sure that he'll think of something when the time comes.
Number 28
And basically that something is, “I don't want to marry you, Andrea.” Well thought out there, Des. Andrea is annoyed and harps on about doing it for Bradley's sake. But Des quite rightly concurs that he'd just be creating a loveless marriage and he'll just end up leaving them like his own father did. Andrea still doesn't back down so Des blurts out that he's still in love with Daphne.
DES: I know it's too late but I still love her.
Shopping Strip
Zoe is kidding around, acting like a 10-year-old, and Jim tells her that he admires her sense of fun. He seems to think he's lost his, but when Zoe challenges him to a race back to the car he laughs and chases after her.
Number 26
Everyone has sat down for dinner but Lucy wants to wait for her dad to get home before she eats. Paul crankily says that Jim should be home already and that he's too old to be “running around like some love struck kid”. Oh, if only you knew the half of it, Paul! Helen tries to shush Paul and tells everyone to just eat their dinner, but Lucy stubbornly sticks to her guns.
Number 28
Daphne has come by to see Zoe, but she hasn't returned home from her date yet. Andrea coldly invites her in to see Des instead, but informs her she'll have to wait in the kitchen till he's finished his game of cricket with Bradley. Daphne reveals that she knows Bradley is Des' son, and Andrea snidely replies that she must feel smug about keeping Bradley from having Des as his legal father. Confused, Daphne says that Des runs his own life, but then Andrea drops the clanger that Des is still in love with her. Daphne's stunned and Andrea lays on the guilt about Bradley never having a secure and loving home because of her.
Des walks in from the backyard and is immediately concerned to see Daphne so rattled. Andrea leaves them alone and Des asks what's wrong.
DAPHNE: (upset) Don't use me against Andrea. We can't go back, that's all in the past. You do whatever you think is best and forget about me.
Number 26
Jim brings Zoe in to stay for dinner and makes Lucy (and Paul) annoyed when he announces that he'll be going out again later that night. Nikki tries to keep the peace by chirpily chatting with Zoe, but Paul keeps on dragging it down with his grumpy ‘tude.
Number 28
Andrea announces that she's taking Bradley back to Perth in the morning. While the rest of Ramsay Street rejoices, Des looks quite sad and wonders if they can stay for a bit longer. Andrea shakes her head; there's no security for them here. Des then asks if she'll stay if he offered to take on all the legal responsibilities for Bradley until he's old enough. “Ker-CHING!” goes the cash register in Andrea's head. Des adds that they'll live together but have separate romantic lives – what does she say. Andrea breaks out into a huge grin whilst singing ‘I'm in the money' in her head.
Number 26
Zoe tries to make friends with Lucy by complimenting her on her pet egg, Eggward. But all she manages to do is accidentally smash it, causing Lucy to have a meltdown. Lucy yells that she hates Zoe and Paul snits at her, “See what you get for interfering?” Feeling awful, Zoe runs home and Jim says he'll follow her soon. Paul and Jim glare at one another.
Number 28
Des is concerned when Zoe bursts in all upset, but takes Andrea to check on Bradley when Jim arrives to give them some privacy. Zoe sobs that his family hates her. Jim is sympathetic but gently says that it's a hard adjustment for them too. Calming down a bit, Zoe tells him to go back and check on Lucy.
Number 26
Paul comforts Lucy and gripes that Jim just walked off to find Zoe instead of staying with his daughter. He then tries to get Scott onside by saying how much he'll probably get teased at school because his dad is running around with a younger woman. Jim walks back inside and everyone scatters bar Paul (oh, and Lucy who peeks out from the hallway). Jim wants Paul to apologize to Zoe for his behaviour but Paul says no.
PAUL: You're a stupid old fool!
(Jim slaps him across the face)
LUCY: (shocked) Daddy, no!

Recap
- Jim slapping Paul across the face
Number 26
Lucy rushes to Paul and clings to him, begging him not to leave. Helen, Scott and Nikki walk out and are shocked to learn what transpired. They tell Jim to talk some sense into Paul (who has left to pack his bags), but Jim angrily retorts that he's sick of people telling him what to do. He understands that Paul's had a rough trot lately but he draws the line at people interfering in his life. Jim then leaves to check up on Zoe, leaving his family in stunned silence.
Later, Lucy sadly asks Paul to stay once again but Paul says it's about time he left anyway. He tells her that even though he and Jim are fighting it doesn't mean they don't love one another. Lucy wisely replies that Paul may treat her like a little kid but she knows more than he thinks! After what Terri did to Paul, they're all the family he's got left, and now that's being torn apart too!
Number 28
Des goes to fetch Zoe at Jim's request and both are gobsmacked when Jim tells them that Paul's decided to leave home. Des thinks that Paul and Jim are making a big mistake, and Zoe frets about breaking up his family. Jim reassures Zoe that it's not ‘her' per say – his family would protest about *any* woman he was seeing. Des exits and Jim confesses that he hit Paul. Zoe's shocked and becomes concerned that Jim always stands by her instead of his family – are they in too deep too soon? But Jim says he knows how he feels about her and he doesn't want anyone to spoil it for him.
Number 26
Taking his bags into the lounge room, Paul announces to his family that he's going to stay at Lassiter's. Scott and Lucy are dark on Jim, but Helen says that no matter what happened they shouldn't undermine Jim's authority as a parent. Lucy starts to cry so Paul hugs her and says he'll still be around all the time for her. They sad music swells as Paul reluctantly leaves and Lucy yells that she hates her dad.
Lassiter's – Paul's Room
Paul checks out his new digs and tips the bellboy (all for opening up the door and switching on a lamp – I'd love to know what Max Ramsay would make of that!). Paul makes out that he's happy to be there but the loneliness quickly hits him.
Number 28
Zoe's worried that Paul might give her a hard time at work after everything that's happened. Jim says that Zoe should tell him if anything unfair happens, but Zoe smiles and says she'll be able to handle it. Relationship talk ensues and they both agree that they don't quite know how to define what they have together – but they both want it to continue. Zoe thinks that Jim should ask Paul back home. Jim says that he will, just as soon as Paul stops acting so selfishly.
Number 26
The kids and Helen are having a chat and Helen says to Lucy and Scott that they need to consider other people's feelings and points of view. Lucy doesn't care what her Gran says, however, because she *knows* that it's not right that her daddy is dating Zoe and she definitely knows it's not right that he hit Paul. Right on! To echo a favourite TV show of mine, “I Love Lucy!”
Number 28
Jim thanks Zoe for all her support and head back home to face the music. Des emerges from the hall to chat with Zoe. He hates to stick his nose in where it's not wanted… but does Zoe really know what she's letting herself in for? Zoe lightly retorts that Des isn't exactly the go-to guy for relationship advice at the moment. Smiling, Des gives her a hug and says that he's just worried about Paul, but Zoe says he needn't bother.
Lassiter's – Paul's Room
After aimlessly flicking through every TV channel on offer, Paul rings up room service and orders up big. He looks quite pleased with himself, but his smile soon fades.
Number 26
Helen informs Jim about where Paul's staying and thinks that the least he can do is try and patch things up with his son. But Jim is tired of his family's interference. He starts to head into the hallway to find Lucy, but Scott gruffly tells him that she's asleep and to leave her alone. Jim's a little startled and Helen tells him that he's going to have to handle his relationship with Zoe very carefully – not just for his family's sake, but for Zoe's as well. Jim wants to know what Helen really thinks of everything and Helen replies that she's not 100% behind it, but ultimately it's up to what Jim wants.
JIM: I want the relationship to work.
HELEN: Are you absolutely sure?
JIM: I couldn't be surer.
Lassiter's Complex – Next Morning
Paul wanders around and gets chatting to a bloke sweeping out the front of The Waterhole (who just happens to be Jack Lassiter – the bloke Clive, Shane and Mike did a gardening job for the other day). He offers to get Paul a coffee, just as Des walks by. He stops to chat to Paul and asks how he's doing, but Paul says he's fine – moving out was probably the best thing he's ever done. Jack brings out the coffee and Des introduces Paul properly to Jack (Jack is a client of his at the bank). Jack tells Paul a bit of his life story about how he got Lassiter's up and running, but things took a turn when he hit some women troubles. Des and Paul sympathise, each experiencing women troubles of their own.
Number 26
Lucy mopes her way to the kitchen table and says that she doesn't want any breakfast. Jim gently chides her for eating Easter eggs beforehand (he can see the chocolate on her face), but Lucy's all, “Well what are you going to do? Hit me too?” Lucy walks out and Nikki says that she's acting very silly, but Scott quickly tells her to mind her own business. Taking Scott aside, Jim says that he needs understanding from him not attitude. He knows it might be an embarrassing situation for the family, but he will not let it determine who he does and doesn't see.
Lassiter's – Paul's Room
Paul has brought Des up to check out the room but Des thinks it's a bit pokey looking. Paul tries to talk up the room's good points – like the room service, the air conditioning and the mini-bar – but Des doesn't look convinced. Paul wants Des to hang out for the day but Des says he's too busy and quickly leaves (Paul Keane accidentally smacking right into the door on his way out – I can't believe they didn't cut that out!). Stefan does a good job looking sad instead of cracking up as I would have done.
Number 26
Lucy answers the door to Zoe and is far from impressed. Zoe wants to know if the two of them can be friends but Lucy says that she hates her – their whole family does. She just wants Zoe to go away and leave them alone. Perturbed, Zoe leaves and Lucy smirks to herself, thinking that she's won the battle.

Recap
- Lucy telling Zoe she hates her and sending her away.
Number 26
Jim asks Lucy who was at the door and wrongly assumes she was talking to Bradley (who he has forbid her to see). But Lucy accidentally divulges that it was Zoe, and he gets annoyed when he hears what she said to her. Lucy goes outside and Jim starts to walk the opposite direction but Helen wonders if he's going the right way.
HELEN: In my opinion that little girl out there needs you more than Zoe does.
Jim understands but is frustrated; is he just supposed to wait till everyone is an adult before he can date again? Helen gives him her best ‘mother-in-law knows best' look and reasserts that he should go and check on Lucy.
Number 26 Backyard
Jim finds Lucy sadly playing on the tra-mam-po-line (tm Homer Simpson), and tells her that he was thinking about seeing a movie later. Lucy glumly asks if “she's” coming and Jim says that he wants to try and treat Zoe as if she were one of the family. Lucy retorts that they've already got lots of family.
JIM: What about your poor old dad, can't he have a friend?
LUCY: You've got plenty of friends.
JIM: I mean a special friend.
LUCY: You've got Mr. Ramsay; you always said he was your best friend.
Quickly changing tack, Jim asks Lucy what will happen when she and Scott are older and he's left all alone. Shouldn't he have someone with him who likes him best of all? At this, Lucy looks hurt and goes back to her bouncing, yelling at her dad that Zoe has messed up their family and he doesn't even care.
Number 22
Daphne's in a cleaning frenzy and Shane comments that with their combined work hours they never get to spend any quality time together. They start to kiss but Zoe interrupts them, needing a girly chat. Shane leaves and Zoe tries not to cry while telling Daphne that Lucy hates her. Daphne has to wonder if Jim and Zoe *really* love one another or if Zoe has residing daddy issues and sees Jim as some sort of father figure. Zoe replies that it's nothing like that but Daphne urges her to have a serious think about things.
Number 26 Backyard
Scott tries to comfort Lucy when they notice Nikki carrying out a box of Paul's belongings to the garage. Lucy's outraged but Nikki snarks that they care more about Paul now he's gone than when he was living with them! Scott and Lucy tell her she's wrong so Nikki tells them to “grow up”, but Lucy yells that she'll prove to Nikki just how grown up she really is. Um, OK?
Ramsay Street
Jim spies Zoe walking back from #22 and runs through the absolute jungle that his is front yard to catch up with her. He asks how she is and says that he's going to get Lucy to apologize later. They kiss and Jim says that his family will come around to the idea of them being together.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul meets up again with Jack Lassiter, who invites him to lunch… in his caravan. Paul's astonished that Jack would rather live in the sticks than in the lap of luxury, but Jack can't believe that Paul's choosing the hotel over his family home – who's the crazy one now?
Number 26
Helen asks Jim when he's going to speak to Paul and sort everything out, but old Jim ain't giving in till Paul says sorry. Max drops around for a few beers and puts in his 2c about Paul moving out and Jim's relationship with Zoe. Tactless as ever, Max winks that he'd love to have a fling with a bird like her.
Jack's Caravan
Paul helps Jack cook the snags and asks why he built Lassiter's if he doesn't even like it. Jack replies that he did it for his wife – he promised her that if he ever struck it rich he'd build a palace for her. He then reveals that she passed away 12 months ago. Paul thinks Jack was still lucky to have a good marriage for as long as he did. He then says that if Jack ever wanted to sell the hotel then his company would be very interested in buying it.
Number 28
Andrea is being uncharacteristically nice to Zoe and tells her that her happiness is the most important thing, and that Jim's family should be more understanding. Lucy arrives and Zoe assumes that she's there to deliver an apology, but Lucy simply says she's stopped by to see Bradley (going against her dad's wishes again in her own little defiant way). Chiding Zoe, Andrea says that she needs to get Lucy onside if she ever wants to marry Jim. Zoe retorts that Andrea just can't wait to see the back of her so she can run the place, and Andrea doesn't do much to convince her otherwise!
Number 26
Helen is busy painting a stock standard ‘fruit bowl' portrait while Nikki completes an assignment… or at least tries to as Scott has his music blaring too loud. They squabble about it until Helen sorts it out (making Scott wear some headphones). Nikki complains that it wouldn't be so bad if there was a spare room for her – she's really pushing for Paul's room, isn't she! He hasn't even been gone two days!
Number 22 Backyard
Daphne hangs out some washing and Shane almost hangs out of his short-shorts whilst he's gardening (they really are most unfortunately tiny). The chat about the topic of the month (Jim/Zoe/Paul, what else?), and Shane says that Zoe is too unpredictable and that it was a good thing that Paul moved out and got his own space. He then says that Paul and Zoe would make a perfect couple “like us”. Well that says it all really, doesn't it!
Lassiter's Complex
Zoe finds Paul perusing the paper and drinking a very non-macho cocktail, complete with pink umbrella. Zoe says she sorry for all the trouble and asks him if he wants her to keep working for him. Paul says that it's up to her, but then quietly confesses that he doesn't want her to go.
ZOE: OK… we'll leave things the way they are then.
PAUL: OK.
She makes to walk away but Paul can't help asking if things between her and his father are serious.
ZOE: Do I love him?
PAUL: Yes.
ZOE: Yes I do.
PAUL: (resigned) That's all I wanted to hear.
ZOE: I've caused enough trouble in your family, Paul. I won't do anything to make it worse.
Zoe looks sad and leaves while Paul glumly rests his head on his arms.

Recap
- Zoe telling Paul that she doesn't want to cause anymore trouble for his family
Number 26
Helen tells Nikki to fetch Lucy for dinner while Scott gets confused setting the table - he was still counting a place for Paul. Jim thinks it might be time for one of them to check up on Paul at Lassiter's and Scott volunteers. Nikki (wearing a giant yellow sack as a t-shirt), reappears and lets the family know that Lucy is nowhere to be found. Jim grumbles that she'll be in trouble if she's off playing with Bradley, but Helen wisely points out that being disobedient is probably the only way Lucy can get her dad's attention these days.
Number 28
Jim asks Zoe if Lucy is with Bradley, but it's Andrea who takes great delight in telling Jim that his daughter is there. She goes to retrieve the kids and Zoe tells Jim that she had a chat with Lucy and she seems to be OK with the idea of them being together now. Andrea returns from the hall with a note - Bradley and Lucy have run away. Andrea is quite upset at first, but when Jim mentions he'll call the police, she suddenly seems a lot calmer and tells him there's no need. Hmm. Jim exits to let his family know what's happened and Andrea and Zoe have a little tiff about who's to blame, but when Zoe says she's going to join the search party, Andrea is surprised and touched she cares so much.
Number 26
Madge is around visiting Helen when Jim walks in and tells them about Lucy's disappearance. Madge offers to gather up Max and the boys to assist with the search party. Jim tells Helen that he's going to look in all the obvious places like the garage - “It's just possible that she wants to be found.”
Number 28
Des arrives home from his mum's and is appalled that Andrea hasn't called the police yet. Andrea makes up some nonsense about just wanting to protect Des - she figures that if the police are involved then everyone will know he's Bradley's father. But Des doesn't care if the whole world knows; he just wants the kids safe. Andrea looks very worried as Des dials the cop shop.
Number 26/Lassiter's
Jim tells Helen and Madge that the kids aren't in the garage, so Helen takes it upon herself to call Paul for help when Jim won't do it. Looking concerned, Paul tells his Gran that he's on his way. Helen gives the news to Jim, who isn't very enthusiastic about it but claims that he just sounds cranky because he's tense about Lucy.
Number 28
Jim rejoins Zoe, Des and Andrea and thinks that they should call the police but Des replies that he's already done it. Andrea continues to look ill at the thought. Zoe wonders to Jim if it *is* her fault that Lucy has run away, and Andrea quickly butts in that it definitely is. She angrily adds that Jim has been putting all the blame on Bradley ever since he arrived on the street, but this time it's his daughter that's the ringleader. Jim wants to save the accusations until later causing Andrea to snap at him, but then she apologises and says she just wants to know where the kids are.
Lassiter's
Paul rushes for his car and is about to turn the keys in the ignition when two little heads pop up from the backseat - Lucy and Bradley.
Lassiter's - Paul's Room
Paul leads the kids in and starts to dial home, but Lucy thinks there's no point; her dad won't care. Paul asks why Lucy believes that and Lucy quickly replies that he hit Paul, which means he doesn't care about any of his kids.
PAUL: And what about you? Do you think your mother doesn't care about you?
BRADLEY: Course she does! I just ran away to look after Lucy.
Hiding a smile, Paul tells Lucy that just because he and Jim had one argument doesn't mean they don't care about one another. In fact, he probably deserved the wallop for all the things he said to Jim. Bradley wonders what Paul's going to do now, but Paul hasn't a clue.
Number 26
Helen stresses that she should have seen this coming because she knew how upset Lucy was, but Madge tells her that she can't blame herself for everything that's happened.
MADGE: The truth is children are totally unpredictable. It's no use beating ourselves over the head for the things we've done wrong.
HELEN: Speaking from experience?
MADGE: The problem with my two was that I never knew when to be gentle and when to be firm. Eventually what I did was be far too hard on Charlene, and too soft on Henry. Charlene adored Henry. When he started to have problems she blamed them on me.
Helen can see that Madge misses Charlene very much, and Madge apologises for getting upset - she was supposed to be cheering Helen up! Jim walks in just as the phone rings. It's Nikki letting them know she hasn't heard anything.
Lassiter's - Paul's Room/Number 26
Bradley quite confidently cracks a beer open from the fridge while Paul is trying to coax Lucy back home. He knows she's mad at their dad, but it doesn't give her the right to upset their Gran (and the rest of the family) too. Noticing the ale, Paul snatches it off Bradley and asks if he wants to keep worrying his mum.
BRADLEY: (indignant) I just ran away to look after Lucy. If I'd let her go by herself she could have got murdered, or bashed or cut up into little pieces!
The kids eventually agree to let Paul ring home and tell everyone they're safe. Jim answers and is quite relieved, telling Paul that he'll come and get them. But Paul wants to take the kids to dinner first so he can have more of a chat with Lucy.
Number 28
Jim has delivered the news to the gang, but the gun that Des is flinging around distracts me for a moment (before I realised it was probably one of Bradley's toys). Andrea wants Des to take her down to Lassiter's quick smart so she can collect her Bradley-kins but the others think that she should just chill out and wait for Paul to bring them back.
ANDREA: Well I still don't understand how you can treat children to dinner after what they've done.
JIM: Well Paul has a lot of common sense and if he thinks that's the right way to handle the situation, I'm prepared to trust him.
ANDREA: That's very interesting. I heard that you virtually threw Paul out of home.
DES: (warningly) Andrea...
ANDREA: I'm only saying what I've heard. As a matter of fact, I heard that you did more than just that. Care to enlighten me?
JIM: No, Andrea, I wouldn't.
Number 26
Helen complains to Madge that she felt sorry for Lucy this morning but now she could wring her little neck! Madge knows exactly how she feels - she's been through the many stages of sympathy/guilt/anger herself. But she asks that Helen not be too critical of Lucy when she returns home. Madge admits that she sees a lot of similarities between Lucy and Charlene and thinks that if she had have been more lenient with her then she'd be living with her right now.
Number 28
Andrea hugs the life out of Bradley when Paul delivers him home and warns him that Des wants to have a few words with him. Grateful, Andrea tells Paul that he's welcome for dinner any night as a way of saying thanks. Paul declines, but instead offers to buy Andrea lunch one day instead.
Andrea steers Bradley inside and Des tries the stern dad act on but isn't all that good at it. He says that Bradley should be punished... He thinks... And then hesitantly checks with Bradley if he should be punished or not!
Number 26
Helen peers out the window and comments that Paul and Lucy have been sitting out there for a while now. Jim remarks that he's just glad to know Lucy's safe, and admits that he's not so mad at Paul anymore, which is music to Helen's ears.
Paul brings a very sullen Lucy inside and says that she has something to tell their Dad and Gran - but what she blurts out isn't quite what he expected.
LUCY: I want Paul to come back home.
PAUL: (shocked) Hey, that's not what we'd agreed you'd say!
LUCY: I don't care. All I promised was to say that I didn't mind about dad and Zoe, and I was only going to say that because I wanted you back home.
Paul apologises and heads out the door but Jim chases after him and they have a big sorry-fest about the whole ordeal. Jim says he's welcome to come back home but Paul doesn't think it will work and admits that he just needs a break from the family.

Recap
- Lucy telling Jim that she wants Paul to come home
- Jim apologising and inviting Paul back
- Paul telling Jim he still needs a break from the family
Number 24
Shane, Max, Madge and Danny are enjoying their usual rambunctious breakfast, bantering about all and sundry. Max thinks Shane needs to get a better job if he's still planning on getting married, but Shane thinks he's doing alright. Max then has a go at Danny for reading the paper at the table, but Danny snidely retorts that it gives him something to do. After he strops off, Max asks his family what's got up Danny's nose lately. Madge suggests he give Danny a bit of an ego boost.
Walking into the lounge room, Max tries his best to give Danny a pep talk about how hard it is to adjust to the world after leaving school and how he'll soon make new friends.
MAX: Just remember, this family thinks a lot of you, mate. We're behind you all the way.
Number 22
Daphne and Mike hurtle downstairs looking for Clive, skidding to a halt when they see he's meditating. Mike doesn't quite understand Clive's new hobby.
DAPHNE: You know what Clive's like. He changes philosophies like he changes socks.
Mike wonders how they're supposed to make breakfast without waking him up, so Daphne suggests tip-toeing. Suddenly, there's a racket as Scott bangs on the front door. Mike quickly ushers him upstairs so Clive isn't disturbed any further, but Clive's eyes snap open. He sneaks into the kitchen without Daphne seeing and resumes his meditating pose on the bench top, scaring the life out of her. He tries to give her his housekeeping money for the week, but Daphne won't accept it; she knows how strapped for cash he is at the moment. But Clive insists because the weekly money from Mike's parents hasn't arrived yet.
Number 28
Des and Zoe are sitting down for breakfast, (if you have this ep, watch for the boom mike that momentarily drops into the top of the scene), and Zoe is stressing about having to work with Paul after everything that's happened. Des suggests she resign but Zoe sighs and says Paul won't let her. Des then suggests that Zoe pull her head out of the sand and take a look at all the lives she's having an effect on because of her relationship with Jim - he hopes it's worth it.
ZOE: It is, Jim means a lot to me. And it's about time his family realise he's got a life of his own.
DES: Yeah well you better get the family onside - and that includes Paul.
ZOE: I wouldn't waste too much sympathy on Paul, he's always telling me what a great survivor he is.
Coffee Shop
Scott and Mike offer to look after the shop so Daphne can have a day off, but she reminds them that they've both got school. Opening a letter, Daphne is dismayed to learn that the owners aren't going to renew her lease - she's only got two more weeks. Mike can't believe he'll be out of a job, and Daphne can't believe she'll have to start up another business from scratch,
Lassiter's Complex
Shane and Clive stumble upon Paul eating breakfast and commiserate about him having to move out of home. Shane reckons that Zoe has always been trouble and didn't think she'd be Jim's type. He also wonders why Paul hired such a “dense head” for a secretary, but Paul says that Zoe is good at her job.
Shane and Clive are then distracted by two female extras, sauntering along the bridge dressed like Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman - before she got the glamour makeover. The boys follow them like salivating dogs.
Coffee Shop
Daphne has brought Des in for some advice and asks if she's entitled to some compensation, but Des says unfortunately she's not. He wonders what the new owners were going to do with the place and Daphne mutters that they're going to renovate it. Getting an idea, Des says that Daphne could set up again after they're done. Daphne knows it'll come at a cost to her (loss of income etc), but the idea has given her some hope.
Daniels' Corporation
Zoe's surprised that Paul wants to buy Lassiter's seeing as he already lives there, but Paul thinks it's too good of a business opportunity to pass up. She doesn't think it's very practical (or comfortable) for him to be living in the hotel, but Paul advises her to start acting more like his secretary and not his financial consultant.
Coffee Shop
Madge has brought over a boxful of pies for Daphne and they chat about how unfair the lease non-renewal is. Madge thinks Daphne could set up shop over at Jackson Terrace, but Daphne replies that it's got to be here or nowhere.
Shopping Complex
Max and Des walk out of the bank, chatting about Bradley. Des reveals that he's told Bradley he should get an after school job (isn't the kid a bit too young?). They bump into Danny and the conversation changes to Daphne losing her lease. Max reckons she should put up a fight, but Des says that she's trying to but legally she doesn't stand a chance. Danny reckons the renovations could be a good thing - if that part of Lassiter's is done up nicely then the property values in Erinsborough will go up.
Coffee Shop
Daphne slams down the phone and angrily tells Clive and Shane that the owners wouldn't give her a straight answer as to why she couldn't renew her lease.
CLIVE: Take it easy, Daph, your pupils are starting to dilate.
The only thing they'd tell her is that some large corporation wants to modernize the building. Shane says it won't be all bad. They're still getting married - maybe Daphne could start to think about whether she wants to still work or not. Daphne is not impressed.
DAPHNE: I am a resourceful, independent woman. I have done my darndest to build up the business and I am proud of that fact.
CLIVE: Actually Daphne, what I think Shane meant to say...
(Daphne glares at him and he shuts up)
DAPHNE: Well no one bothered to tell me we'd gone back to the dark ages.
Daphne then reminds Shane that he's hardly a consistent breadwinner and doesn't know how they'd survive on his variable wage. Shane retorts that lots of families live on a wage like his, but he gets angry when Daphne says she's spoken to Des about what she wants to do.
He follows her into the kitchen and asks if he's going to get any say when they get married. Daphne doesn't think he will if he keeps insisting on tying her to the kitchen sink. Shane wants to know why she goes running to Des every time she has a problem. Frustrated, Daphne says that he's demeaning himself with his stupid jealousy. Shane storms out.
We switch to later in the day. Daphne and Mike are cleaning up when Clive walks in, wanting a chat with Mike. He lets him know that they haven't received any cheques from his parents for a fortnight. But it gets worse - Mike's dad knew nothing about the money. His mum must have been taking it out of housekeeping each month, and now his dad knows he's not letting her support Mike any longer. Mike frets, but Clive and Daphne rally around him and say they'll work something out.
Number 24
Max gathers the family for a meeting. He reckons they all take one another for granted so he suggests that they all take more of an interest in each other's lives. He reveals that he's been reading a “Yankee mag” that says they should talk about feelings and emotions more often. Madge hides her face behind her apron so she doesn't bust out laughing. Shane's also struggling to conceal his giggles and quickly heads out to see Daphne.
Coffee Shop
Shane and Daphne are kissing and making up in the kitchen. Shane apologises again for being an idiot and Daphne says she only went to Des for business advice. She brings up Mike's situation, which will add to her money woes, and Shane says that Daphne could sell all her work equipment and invest the money. But that only leads back to the ‘one-income won't suffice' argument. Daphne resolutely says that she's going to keep her business afloat any way she can.
SHANE: (teasing) You know a bloke could get a bit of a complex when his girl starts preferring the company of a cappuccino machine's to his.
(Daphne smiles and kisses him)
DAPHNE: I'm sorry.
SHANE: Me too.
DAPHNE: But I meant what I said. I'm not turning my back on all of this. Coffee?
SHANE: (smirking) Cappuccino?
Ramsay Street
Scott is strolling up the street when he notices someone trying to break through the window of #24. Yelling out, he runs up the front stairs of the house and confronts the intruder... Who proceeds to punch him in the face. Madge races out after hearing the commotion, and is quite shocked to see who Scott's with.
MADGE: Charlene?
Charlene sheepishly takes her hat off and smooths out her hair.

Recap
- Scott getting punched in the face by a mystery intruder
- Madge discovering the intruder is her daughter Charlene
Number 24
Madge scolds Charlene for being violent, but she thinks Scott should have learnt to fight properly. Embarrassed, Scott leaves, but not before Charlene gives him a handshake and an appreciative once-over. Madge frog-marches Charlene inside to get cleaned up.
Number 22
Shane and Clive face the wrath of Daphne, who is annoyed that she can't do anything to save her coffee shop from being sold. Clive encourages Daphne to prove to the owners that she's indispensable by bringing in more customers - that way she may be able to keep her business. Daphne loves the idea.
Coffee Shop
Scott shamefully walks in and admits to Mike that “Lenny Mitchell” punched him in the face. Mike's amused; he's never met a girl who could fight before. Mike then confesses to Scott that he's got problems of his own now that his parents aren't supporting him financially anymore. Suddenly, he gets an idea and asks Scott to cover his shift for an hour.
MIKE: I'm going to go and see my parents.
SCOTT: Do you think that's a good idea?
MIKE: I don't know, but I'm going to sort this out once and for all.
Number 24
Max and Danny discover their visitor and Charlene cheekily jokes that if they call her by her real name (and not Lenny) she'll flatten them.
MADGE: Charlene, one brawl is enough for one day.
MAX: Who'd ya do, ay?
CHARLENE: (proud) Scott Robinson.
MAX: (cracks up laughing)
MADGE: Oh Max, don't encourage her, please!
Shane arrives back home and hugs his cousin. The boys wonder how long she's staying for and Charlene shrugs that it could be forever.
CHARLENE: I can't stay with dad any longer, that's for sure.
MADGE: Why not? You were perfectly happy to in the first place.
CHARLENE: Because he's moved Susan into the house. She's expecting a baby you know.
Madge is definitely not excited to hear this.
Coffee Shop
Scott reluctantly tells Daphne and Clive that Mike's gone to see his parents. Clive starts to head for the exit.
CLIVE: Not a good idea. If I'm not back in ten minutes, drag the river.
But Scott adds that Mike wanted to do this on his own and that he seemed to think he could handle it himself. Although worried, Daphne and Clive realise they've got to trust Mike. Talk then turns to the business. Clive suggests that Daphne start up a big publicity campaign.
CLIVE: How about we get someone in to eat something really weird.
DAPHNE: Like what?
CLIVE: Like a bike.
DAPHNE & SCOTT: A bike?!
CLIVE: There's a guy in France who ate a pushbike, it took him two weeks!
DAPHNE: To live or die!
SCOTT: Did that include tyres?
CLIVE: And the tubes. Just think, for two weeks you could have this whole place stacked out with people watching someone devour a BMX.
Daphne reckons Clive needs to go back to the drawing board.
Number 24
Upset, Madge has taken Charlene into the kitchen and warns her not to embarrass her like that again. Charlene protests that it's the truth, but Madge thinks she was completely tactless in her approach. Talk then turns to Henry and Madge reveals that she went to see her son but he wanted nothing to do with her. Charlene thinks it's because she doesn't listen to her children, and preaches to them instead. Getting upset again, Madge tells Charlene that if she's going to stay in Erinsborough then she's going to have to reign in her attitude.
CHARLENE: And if I don't?
MADGE: Then I'm going to have to speak with your father.
CHARLENE: Do you want me here or not?
MADGE: Of course I do, you're my daughter.
CHARLENE: Yeah but you don't like me very much do you?
MADGE: (teary) That's not true!
CHARLENE: Don't lie, mum, it just makes things worse.
Mike's Parents' House
Mike sees his mum walking back from the shops and they share a very formal greeting. Mike's mum knows he's there about the money but she's afraid that she can't send anymore. Mike reminds her that he wanted to go to teacher's college, but his mum says he'll just have to quit school and get a full-time job instead because his dad isn't going to let her help him out again.
MIKE: I was saving up to get you away from him remember? You always said that you hated him.
But Mike's mum just says she's sorry and heads towards the house. Mike does the sad Charlie Brown walk down the driveway, not noticing that his mum has stopped to miserably see him off.
Number 24
Charlene's bored and is trying to get Danny to go out with her, but he's not interested. Shane encourages Danny to take her to Daphne's, but Madge thinks Charlene's being very rude by annoying her cousin. Danny eventually relents and Charlene happily skips out the door. Madge is worried about them getting into trouble, but Shane and Max reckon they'll be fine... Well, in theory anyway.
Coffee Shop
Clive, Daphne and Scott are still trying to think up ideas to get in more customers.
CLIVE: Let's see, no bicycles, no baked beans, no bananas.
SCOTT: No chickens or no clams.
DAPHNE: And definitely no doughnuts, eels, eggs or frankfurters.
CLIVE: What about ‘The Great Gherkin Eating Contest'?
SCOTT: Everybody would be green after the first half dozen.
CLIVE: I knew a bloke who could eat nearly a kilo in a minute.
DAPHNE: Clive, must we?
CLIVE: OK, no gherkins... What about haggis? Get all the Scots in?
(Scott and Daphne shake their heads)
CLIVE: No? No? (resigned) No.
Charlene and Danny arrive and Charlene introduces herself to Clive and Daphne. They help the trio out with their alphabetised food list and quickly decide upon pancakes as the winner. Mike gets back and Daphne tries to have a quiet word with him, but he's not in a good mood and snits that there's nothing to talk about. Charlene, meanwhile, is making moon-eyes at Mike.
Number 24
Picking up bits of strewn newspaper, Madge complains about being a slave to her family and that they resent her. Max reckons it's because she whinges too much. He suggests that she might like to move back to Coffs Harbour with Charlene and Henry, but Madge angrily replies that she can't.
Coffee Shop
Charlene tries to have a chat with Mike but he's not interested. She re-joins the food table where Clive is explaining the rules of the contest. They'll draw two tickets out of a barrel, then the two lucky couples chosen will have to make their own pancakes, squeeze their own OJ and then eat/drink everything. The fastest couple will then be the winners. Daphne wonders where the partner element comes in, but Clive has it all worked out. He puts an orange under his chin and encourages Daphne to grab it using her chin. Laughing, she goes over to neck him and he jokingly dips her to the ground... Just as Shane walks in. Of course, Shane is a jealous ball of rage and isn't amused. They try to explain the contest, but Shane would prefer a quite chat with his fiancйe.
In the kitchen, Shane wonders why he's feeling so left out lately. Clive ducks his head in to let Daphne know they're leaving and Daphne thanks him for all his help.
CLIVE: My pleasure.
SHANE: Yeah, I'll bet it is.
Daphne's over his stupid jealousy rampage and reminds him that he said he trusted her. Shane then admits that his main concern is that she's having to bring in all the dough because his own financial prospects are dire.
SHANE: Sometimes I wonder if this place is more important to you than I am.
DAPHNE: I love you, Shane.
SHANE: Then when are you going to marry me?
DAPHNE: ... How about two months from now?
SHANE: (grinning) Fantastic!
They hug but Daphne doesn't look too thrilled.
Number 24
Max bids Madge goodnight, but Madge wonders how Max can sleep when the kids are still out. Max isn't worried at all, but Madge can't help herself and grabs her bag to go and look for them. Max stops her and says that she's being too uptight, but Madge is worried about Charlene gaining a reputation.
MAX: Listen, you're going to turn her against you.
MADGE: Max I have always been strict with my children but I have never been unfair.
Number 22
Shane kisses Daphne goodnight and says she's made him very happy. He leaves and she glumly heads inside (Clive's gorilla suit is hanging by the doorway, heh). Daphne sits in darkness and mopes for a while till Clive comes downstairs to check on her. She states that everything's fine, and that her and Shane are getting married in two months.
DAPHNE: I just hope I've got everything under control by then.
CLIVE: Well you should know one way or another in the next month or so, shouldn't you?
DAPHNE: It's not the coffee shop it's Shane.
She admits to Clive that Shane's too worried about work and gets jealous of every guy she speaks to. Clive wonders if getting married is the right thing to do, but Daphne says that it is, and besides, she's committed now.
DAPHNE: It's been a long day, I'm off to bed.
CLIVE: Best of luck...
(She walks out of earshot)
CLIVE: ... With your wedding.

Recap
- Charlene blaming Madge for putting Henry in jail
Number 24
The fighting escalates between mother and daughter until Madge orders Charlene to pack her bags and leave. Shane, Max and Danny mediate, pointing out that it's too late for Lenny to find a new place tonight. Feeling outnumbered, Madge tearfully heads off to bed while Max offers his room to his niece for the night; he'll put up with the couch.
Early the next morning Madge stumbles out, unable to sleep, and offers Max a hot cup of tea. But Max would rather hear about how Henry wound up in jail. Crying, Madge explains that Henry's in for theft. She tried to do all she could to help him, but when he kept running away, Fred washed his hands of him. The last straw came when Henry stole from his employers and wanted Madge to cover his $1000 debt, but she didn't have the cash and refused.
MADGE: I thought he had to be made responsible for his own actions, but I didn't realise they'd be so harsh. Henry had turned 18 and the judge had decided to make an example of him. [Bursting into tears] Now he's refusing to see me. He hates me, Max.
Max reassures his sister that it's not her fault, but Madge wishes Charlene could see it that way. She doesn't know where she went wrong and admits that she no longer feels close to her children.
Ramsay Street
Nikki bounds over to Mike and bugs him about being her new jogging partner, but Mike's in a snappy mood and takes it out on her. He soon apologises and admits he's having money problems. Nikki reminds him they're friends and she'll do all she can to help him out, before giving him a kiss on the cheek. Mike gives her a kiss in return before walking off.
Number 24
Shane explains the ins and outs of Daphne and Clive's pancake competition to his family. Danny thinks Madge should have a go, and she agrees. Charlene appears and sourly announces that she's leaving, but Madge confesses that she may have been too hasty in her actions last night. She tells Charlene she can stay but on one condition: she has to attend school. Charlene protests - she'd rather get her apprenticeship - but Madge is all “like it or lump it”. Oh, and she's starting today.
Number 26
Scott compliments Helen on her breakfast and suggests she enter the pancake competition. Helen smiles and says she could have a go. Nikki's all for it too - anything that lets Mike keep his job is OK in her books.
Madge brings Charlene over, who shares a big hug with Helen. Madge introduces her daughter to Nikki and announces they'll be going to school together.
SCOTT: Oh great, I'll show her around.
CHARLENE: Just show me the way to Mike Young; what a spunk!
NIKKI: [stares death rays at her]
Helen tells Nikki that Charlene can borrow one of her uniforms. Nikki scowls and goes to fetch it. Madge wants to take Charlene in and get her enrolled, but Charlene isn't keen on being treated like a child, so Madge agrees to meet her at the office. Nikki brings out a spare school dress, which is quite an unfortunate puke colour.
CHARLENE: Oh, yuck. I wouldn't wear this to a bad taste party.
She quickly makes plans to walk to school with Scott (and Mike) then flits off with Madge in tow.
Number 24
Charlene walks out and parades her dress (and hot pink socks) to the boys. Danny isn't impressed with how she treated Madge last night, but Charlene doesn't think it's any of his business. Danny and Shane start to wonder what Henry's in jail for, which makes Charlene angry. Max intervenes and tells them to pull their heads in just as Madge appears in the kitchen. Taking one look at Charlene, she does the mum spit thing with a tissue and wipes off her excess make-up.
MADGE: It's a high school not a wine bar!
Charlene isn't fussed about making a good impression on the principal - she's going to be a mechanic anyway - but Madge recoils at the thought. She won't have her daughter wasting her brains in a garage.
Number 26
Nikki tells Helen all about Mike's family and money woes because she's worried about him. She thinks it'd be such a waste if he had to leave school. There's a knock at the door, and of course it's Mike. He's looking for Mr Robinson because he's in the market for a full-time job (much to Nikki's alarm). Helen says she'll pass on the message and Nikki grabs Scott to head off to school.
Ramsay Street
The three teens catch up with Charlene, who immediately takes her place alongside Mike. Nikki tries to push in the middle and talk to Mike, hoping it's not his last day at school, but Mike says he's serious about getting a job and is checking one at lunch time. Charlene offers to come with him.
Ext: Erinsborough High
Mike frets about getting caught while Charlene awkwardly changes into her civvies behind some trees. She pulls her dress over her head but it gets stuck on her massive earrings. Mike tries to help her out, but freaks when he sees the principal heading towards them. Clamping a hand over Charlene's mouth to shut her up, Mike ducks down with her behind the bush. But they're in luck - he's only heading to his car to get some files. They resume clothes wrestling.
Number 26
Madge has a chat with Helen and admits she's ropeable after speaking with Fred on the phone earlier. She can't stand the fact that he's moved on and has demanded he send down every stick of furniture from their house. Helen offers to have Charlene stay at her place - she's sure Nikki wouldn't mind sharing (yeah right). Madge isn't sure, Charlene can be quite the handful, but Helen likes that she's full of beans.
Ext: Warehouse
Mike waits in line while Charlene struts back after her interview and tells him she wasn't offered a job. Mike, meanwhile, has been waiting an hour and hasn't had any success. He worries about getting back to school on time, but Charlene doesn't see the point of stressing since he's leaving anyway. She says she'll wait with him and just stick her fingers in her ears if she cops an earbashing off Madge later on.
Number 26
Scott and Nikki arrive home from school and act evasive when Madge asks them how Charlene went on her first day. Via their numptiness, Madge realises her daughter “played truant” and angrily storms out to find Charlene and yell at her.
Ext: Warehouse
Mike and Charlene are still waiting when a guy comes out and puts up a ‘No Vacancies' sign. Mike feels it's all over, but Charlene fires up and yells at the interviewer for not talking to all of the applicants before he decided on the best man for the job. Charlene continues on her angry tirade before Mike manages to drag her away.
Ramsay Street
Nikki waits for Mike to get home, turning green when she sees him laughing and chatting with Charlene as they walk up the path. Nikki hands Mike some homework he missed, just as Madge yells at Charlene from the balcony of #24. Charlene thinks Nikki dobbed her in, but Nikki protests her innocence. Before she heads off to face the firing squad, Charlene gives Mike a good luck kiss on the cheek for his future job endeavours. Mike smiles. Nikki seethes.

Recap
In the street outside number 24
Nikki is moaning at Mike for enjoying the kiss that Charlene gave him but he says she (Charlene) took him by surprise and that it didn't matter. Nikki points out that he spent the whole afternoon with her, but Mike says he was just keeping her company while she tried to sort out her life, something he can relate to. Nikki says she thought that she and Mike were together but Mike says he's got too much on to be a couple with anyone but when Nikki asks he says he still wants to be friends. Nikki blames herself for coming on too strong, but Mike says it not her, it's about him. Nikki accuses Mike of preferring Charlene but he denies it, saying they're just friends like he and Nikki. Nikki doesn't believe him and walks off saying if he wants Charlene he can have her. Mike looks fed up by the whole thing.
Number 24
Madge questions Charlene about playing truant. Charlene's response is to accuse Nikki of dobbing her in and says she didn't miss anything.
CHARLENE: I didn't miss anything important. An arvo off's not going to hurt me.
MADGE: I'll be the judge of that. While I'm responsible for you, you will do as you're told and that includes going to school when you're supposed to.
CHARLENE: Well that was what I was doing trying to do today – trying to fix things so you won't be responsible for me anymore.
MADGE: What on earth do you mean?
CHARLENE: I went for a job – I didn't get it but I will get something. I've made up my mind.
MADGE: A job? What sort of job?
CHARLENE: Apprentice motor mechanic.
MADGE: Oh Charlene, I don't know where you get these fanciful ideas about you leaving school, let alone becoming a motor mechanic. Now you listen to me carefully. You will finish school and then you will study something sensible…like a course at secretarial school.
CHARLENE: But I don't want to….
MADGE: I don't care what you want.
CHARLENE: What are you trying to turn me into – a boring little goody- goody like Nikki?
MADGE: I'll have you know that Nikki is a very pleasant young lady.
CHARLENE: She is a pain.
MADGE: Well we'll see about that. As you're going to be spending a great deal of time with her maybe some of her qualities will rub off on you.
CHARLENE: What do you mean I'll be spending time with her?
MADGE: I've organised your accommodation. You're going to be sharing a room with Nikki at the Robinsons.
CHARLENE: Oh what!
Number 26 kitchen
Scott is doing homework at the table while Nikki is moping. Helen coaxes out of her that she had a fight with Mike. Nikki says it's her own fault. She just wanted to support Mike but suffocated him because he took her support the wrong way.
Scott assures Nikki things will work out and then leaves for the Coffee Shop. Helen tries to cheer Nikki up by telling her Charlene's going to be her roommate. Nikki is horrified by the idea.
The Coffee Shop
While Daphne makes sandwiches behind the counter, Zoe and Clive are discussing the Coffee Shop's increased trade and Clive says it's down to his publicity campaign. Scott enters the shop and Daphne asks him where Mike is. Scott replies he assumes he's at her place. Daphne questions why he's not at the Coffee Shop and Scott explains that Mike and Nikki has a row but says he doesn't really understand what it was about. Daphne's annoyed that Mike didn't let her know he was running late and asks where he was that afternoon as the school had rung her. Scott says he's sure Mike will be along soon and asks for a milkshake before he starts work.
Zoe collects her food and goes to leave the shop but Clive catches her before she leaves to give her a ticket for the Coffee Shop's publicity campaign. He launches into his spiel, addressing the whole shop and explains the competition. Every customer will get given a ticket with their purchase and then two tickets will be picked. The holders of those tickets will then take part in a pancake competition, with the winner collection $100.
Zoe takes her ticket and leaves. As she walks out, Mike walks in. He apologises for being late but Daphne questions him about where he's been. He tells her and Clive that he is not looking for a full time job. Clive queries about his plans for uni and teacher training. Mike says it was only an idea and he's made up hi mind – he's quitting school.
Daniels Corporation Office
Paul is at his desk when Zoe returns. When she puts the food down on his desk Paul notices her ticket and Zoe explains about the competition, which Paul mocks. He says Daphne will never raise enough money. Zoe gets annoyed and criticises him for being an unsupportive friend, but Paul says it's business. He then cuts the conversation by asking Zoe to take some dictation.
The Coffee Shop
Scott and Mike are both working behind the counter. Scott tells Mike he heard about the row with Nikki and that he's sorry. Mike is short with him, telling him to forget about it, he has. Clive tells Mike to cheer up saying his long face is putting customers off. Mike walks off into the kitchen and Clive follows.
Daphne is in the kitchen as Mike enters and tries to persuade him to reconsider about school. Mike refuses saying he needs to support himself and won't be a bludger. Clive enter the kitchen and asks Mike to tell them what happened when he met his parents the previous day. Mike reveals his dad has convinced his mum to no longer support him financially and that he needs to stand on his own two feet. As Daphne and Clive offer moral support, Mike says he doesn't need anybody's help with anything and he doesn't need pampering. He tells them that he has broken up with Nikki and he'll break up with Daphne and Clive is they don't lay off.
Number 26 kitchen
Helen is painting when Nikki enters, still looking mournful. She apologises for her reaction to the news about Charlene. Helen in turn apologises for making the arrangement without consulting her. Nikki insists it's fine, citing that she is only a guest anyway. Helen corrects her, saying she is more than a guest, she is family. Helen offers to cancel the arrangement but Nikki says it will be like being back at boarding school. When Helen asks is she'd like to back to boarding school, Nikki says no, and it doesn't matter anyway as there's no point wanting something you can't have. Helen asks if that includes Mike but Nikki says that's different. Helen is please to hear that and shows Nikki a piece of paper she picked up at the post office that contains information that she thinks will help Mike.
Number 24 kitchen
Charlene wonders whether Lucy would be willing to share with Nikki so that Charlene could have her room, but Madge tells her it's all agreed. She then asks her to put the cutlery on the table and Charlene reaches for the drawer.
MADGE: No, no not there, the matching sets on the dresser.
CHARLENE: What's the matter with these? You can eat with things that don't match you know.
MADGE: Now that's just the attitude I'd expect from you. I suppose your father and his girlfriend eat out of paper plates.
CHARLENE: (enthusiastically) No, Susan's a fantastic cook, makes the most amazing meals, all gourmet stuff you know.
MADGE: (in slight amazement) You have no tact or sensitivity have you? I really thought when you got down here you'd try and patch things up between us.
CHARLENE: Well I haven't noticed you making any effort. All you've done is pick on me.
MADGE: That's not true! I just…I just feel that we don't know each other anymore.
CHARLENE: You want me to go back to Coffs Harbour?
MADGE: Of course I don't want that.
CHARLENE: It would make things easier. I'll go back if you want me to. Dad said I can.
MADGE: I don't want to disillusion you but I've spoken to your father and he doesn't want you back. He and his floozie want to be on their own. So you see you're stuck with me whether you like it or not and while you're here you are going to do as you're told.
CHARLENE: You don't like me do you?
MADGE: Oh don't be silly Charlene, of course I like
CHARLENE: No, you're lying.
MADGE: Charlene
CHARLENE: You're so cold with me. Even when you says you care about me and you do things for me, you're still cold.
MADGE: Don't call me a liar.
CHARLENE: Well tell me the truth. Say it if you don't like me.
MADGE: Alright, I will tell you the truth. I don't like your attitude towards me. I don't like your sloppy approach to life and your tactlessness and insensitivity are downright anti- social. You are my daughter and I love you and I care about you, but no right now I don't like you very much at all.
Madge walks off to the bedrooms leaving a shell- shocked Charlene behind.
The Coffee Shop
Mike and Scott are working when Nikki enters with the paper Helen gave her earlier. She explains it's an application for benefit for unsupported children who want to stay at school. Mike refers to it as a handout. Nikki explains the process, that you have to be assessed to qualify. Daphne and Clive come over as Nikki explains everything. They look really enthusiastic but when Nikki says the scheme could solve all Mike's problems, he angrily says it doesn't solve anything and that he won't apply. Nikki asks why not and he replies he won't tell his private life to some stranger in a government office. Clive offers to go with him as support but Mike rejects him. Despite attempts to persuade him, Mike refuses to consider it and storms off to the kitchen. Daphne and Clive follow him.
Daphne tells Mike he should be ashamed of himself for not even considering the scheme. As Mike complains he's getting it from all sides, Daphne points out that what he is getting is help. Mike says he's trying to make it on his own and he doesn't want people running around for him. Clive highlights that if Mike takes the benefit and becomes a teacher, he'll repay all he receives through taxes which will to help others in the future. The same won't be the case if he's a sometimes unemployed unskilled labourer. Mike admits he didn't think of it that way. Daphne says he's not thinking at all. When Clive refers to the meeting with his parents Mike gets upset. Daphne says she knows that it hurt him but he can't take it out on everyone else. Mike agrees. After a moment, Mike agrees to complete the form and apply for the benefit. A relieved Clive heads back into the shop and Daphne asks Mike what he's going to do about Nikki. Mike replies that even with the benefit he can't afford to take her out. Daphne says that's up to him, but what she meant was that he should apologise to her for his reaction to the form.
Daniels Corporation office
Paul is on the phone setting up a date. Zoe looks disapproving and Paul asks if she's judging him. She says no but is critical nonetheless. Paul dismisses her comments, saying she doesn't understand adult relationships. She says if they are relationships with feelings then she doesn't want to. She reverts to her earlier comments about Paul not helping Daphne save the coffee shop and then sarcastically apologises for mixing business and personal feelings.
Number 24
Madge is in the kitchen cooking when Charlene enters with her bag, saying she'll be off to the Robinsons. Madge asks Charlene to remember she's a guest there and to try and help out with chores. Charlene cuts her off saying she knows how to behave and just because Madge doesn't like her, doesn't mean other people won't.
MADGE: I'm your mother, I have expectations for my children.
CHARLENE: Don't I know it and I've never lived up to a single one of them yet! Neither did Henry. Look what happened to him.
MADGE: Charlene!
Charlene moves and finishes packing. Madge follows her.
MADGE: I never discussed Henry's stealing with you but you grew up knowing about it. He stole right through his childhood. We did everything we could but nothing could stop him.
CHARLENE: Don't you know why? We grew up with so many rules, the only fun in life was breaking them.
MADGE: Well what was I supposed to do? Condone his stealing? I covered for Henry time after time. It's why we never had any money for luxuries. I paid up to keep Henry out of court but when he stole from the company there was nothing I could do. He went too far.
CHARLENE: You could at least have got him out on bail before the trial. You washed your hands of him the moment the police took him away.
MADGE: (Sighs) Oh Charlene. No you've got it all wrong. Henry…. Henry's counsel expected him to get off with a good behaviour bond. Then everything started to go wrong: we got a stern judge in a bad mood who was fed up with teenage boys in trouble.
CHARLENE: Yeah and now he's in jail for 18 months. You could have helped if you'd made an effort. (Pause). I'm going to the Robinsons' now.
Charlene heads to the door.
MADGE: Charlene, I do love you and I'll be here if you need me. I'll tell you what, I'll come over now and see you get settled.
Madge begins to remove her apron.
CHARLENE: No don't worry. I won't embarrass you. Bye.
Charlene leaves and Madge thinks for a moment then calls after Charlene ‘Charlene, wait, I'm coming with you.' She rushes out of the house.
Lounge of number 26
Nikki is sitting on the settee. Scott comes in from the kitchen with Mike who has come to see her. Helen emerges from the bedrooms and greets Mike, but Scott drags her into the kitchen so that Mike and Nikki can talk.
There is an awkward pause and then Mike apologises. Nikki forgives him instantly. Mike says he going to apply for the government benefit and Nikki is really pleased. They are about to kiss when Charlene enters without knocking. She instantly realises what she's interrupted and insincerely apologises. Helen and Scott come through from the kitchen to welcome her, while Madge follows her in. There is a lot of chatter and Mike and Nikki look at each other wistfully knowing their moment is lost.
Scott comments Charlene is travelling light and she says most of her stuff is still at her dad's. Madge corrects her by saying it is on the way to Erinsborough along with the rest of her possessions as she (Madge) didn't want ‘that woman' using her belongings. Charlene speaks up for Susan. Mike goes to leave and Nikki apologises for them being interrupted. Charlene watches Nikki kiss Mike on the cheek with amusement. Nikki looks smug as she shuts the door. Now Mike has left, Helen asks Nikki to show Charlene through to the bedroom. Nikki's lack of enthusiasm only further amuses Charlene who announces she is going to like living there.
Daniels Corporation office
Paul and Zoe are packing up for the night and Paul asks Zoe to do some filing. As she looks at the papers he's given her, Zoe realises that the Daniels Corporation is the company that is likely to evict Daphne from the Coffee Shop. Zoe is furious with Paul for not saying anything but Paul tells her to calm down and that is over- reacting. He says it is Rosemary's plan and it's just business. Zoe says he's despicable and that Daphne should be told. She can't understand how Paul can do this to a friend. Paul seems unfazed but makes it clear that if Zoe tells anyone what she knows it will cost her her job.

No. 28
Des, Bradley and Andrea walk into No. 28, Bradley raving about the speedway. Andrea sighs that that's enough – she wants him to brush his teeth and go to bed. Bradley pouts that he wants a drink. Andrea tells him that he's been drinking all day. She turns to Des, who tells Bradley that they can't take him out on these special outings, like the speedway, if he doesn't do what he's told. Bradley reluctantly heads off to his room, leaving Andrea to tell Des that he's certainly got the knack with Bradley. She adds:
ANDREA: It's funny: sometimes I can't help wondering, you know, how things might have turned out.
DES: What, with you and me?
ANDREA: Hm – in Perth – if your mother hadn't've said her piece...
DES: I reckon we would have gone great guns: I would have proposed, you might have accepted... then we would have been hit by a natural catastrophe – something like an earthquake!
Andrea laughs that he's a nutcase! She then adds that any girl would be lucky to marry him. Des murmurs that it's a pity no one told Daphne: she's the most perfect woman in the world and he shot through. He goes on that every morning he stands in front of the mirror and shaves... and every morning he just kicks himself.
No. 26
Zoe has turned up at No. 26 and she asks Helen if she can talk to Jim. Helen leaves them to it. Zoe heads through to the kitchen where Jim asks what the major catastrophe is! Zoe tells him that there's this friend with a problem: she works for a company who's about to do something that might hurt *another* friend, and this friend doesn't know who to be loyal to. Jim listens before suggesting:
JIM: Why don't we talk in plain English? What's Paul up to?
ZOE: Who said it's anything to do with Paul?
Jim tells her that he's quite prepared to help her, but he needs to know the full facts. Zoe, however, just says she'll go and sleep on it – she's sorry to disturb him. Jim then invites her for dinner tomorrow at 7pm. Zoe kisses him and accepts.
No. 28
The next morning, Zoe and Andrea are preparing breakfast and Zoe comments that she always meant to ask Andrea how she and Des met in Perth. Andrea laughs that she spilt a drink on him – accidentally! They ended up having this mad teenage romance, but then Eileen came into it: she didn't think she was good enough for her ‘Desmond'; but her parents finally moved out of town and that was that. Zoe then asks Andrea how she met Bradley's father. Andrea murmurs:
ANDREA: That's not something I talk about very often. I suppose I was just young and not too streetwise.
Zoe looks at her watch and realises the time. She dashes off to her room to do her hair, just as Des emerges from his room and finds breakfast on the table. He smiles at Andrea that she's spoiling him and he likes it! Andrea asks him if he's sure he doesn't mind babysitting Bradley tonight. Des assures her that it's fine. Andrea goes on that she thinks Paul wants to take her somewhere ritzy, but she'd rather it was a pizza, as she hasn't got anything to wear. Des takes a note out of his wallet and tells her to splash out on a new dress. Andrea tries to resist, but Des presses it on her. She smiles at him:
ANDREA: I told Zoe you were one in a million.
Driveway of No. 24
Clive and Shane are loading up Bertha as Daphne stands watching. Zoe walks towards them and Shane asks her for her opinion on the poster for the Coffee Shop. Shane asks her if she think it'll bring new customers to the shop. Zoe just shrugs that she doesn't see why not. Daphne smiles that that's all she needs to know: if she can prove she can attract more customers, they'll *have* to renew her lease; it wouldn't be fair *not* to. Zoe just says flatly that she'd better hurry – they know what Paul's like when she's late. She heads off down the street, leaving Daphne and Clive looking worried.
Office of the Daniels Corporation
Helen has turned up at the office. Paul smiles in delight and invites her in. Helen looks around and remarks that the place is very impressive. Paul nods that it's a start; if it was too flash, the clients would think he was ripping them off! Helen sits down and Paul asks how things are at home. Helen replies that they haven't been quite the same since he moved out... Paul gives her a look. Helen goes on that she was wondering if he'd like a home- cooked meal sometime this week – perhaps tonight? Paul, however, tells her that he's already got a dinner- date with Andrea Townsend. Helen suggests they make it some other time, then. Changing the subject, Paul says:
PAUL: So how's your little empire going?
HELEN: You mean Home James? In a word, ‘quiet'. In two words, ‘deathly quiet'.
Paul offers his sympathy – but he then reaches into his desk, takes out some business cards and tells Helen that the guys listed may need a limo; it'll get the ball rolling. Helen thanks him, gratefully. Zoe comes in at that moment and Paul mutters that it's about time. He orders her to put on some coffee. Paul thanks Helen for dropping by and she heads out. Zoe tells Paul that she thinks a talk would be a good idea. Paul, however, retorts:
PAUL: Look, if it concerns what you accidentally stumbled across yesterday, forget it.
ZOE: But I can't just stand by—
PAUL (sternly): Zoe, I said forget it. Now, go and do some work.
Building site at Lassiter's
Clive is busy talking to Jack Lassiter while Shane gets on with some heavy lifting. After a few moments, Shane walks over to them and asks tersely for a word with his silent partner. Jack leaves them to it. Shane tells Clive that Jack isn't some country bumpkin – he can smell a con merchant a mile off; Clive's time would be better spent on some hard yakka. He hands him a shovel!
Coffee Shop
Helen is sitting with Jim, commenting that she's grateful to Paul for the business cards; she thinks she might contact the people by letter. She adds that Paul seemed to be very pleased to help her. Jim just grunts. Helen tells him not to be so cynical: Paul's still feeling his way, and he enjoys wielding some authority. Jim muses:
JIM: So Zoe tells me.
HELEN (laughs): Yes, he *can* be a bit of a taskmaster.
JIM (coolly): I think the word you're searching for is ‘tyrant'.
HELEN: I thought we were calling for a temporary truce.
JIM: Sorry! I'm sorry.
Daphne comes over with their order and then hands them tickets to enter the Great Pancake Competition. Jim tells her that Helen's pancakes are special. Daphne smiles that Helen can only enter if her name is drawn from a barrel – the competition seems to be attracting a lot of attention. She adds that Zoe even said she's going to plait her hair so she's got *everything* crossed! Jim asks her if she's *seen* Zoe today. Daphne nods that she saw her this morning, but didn't talk to her much as she seemed a little flustered.
Building site at Lassiter's
Shane is still working hard when Paul walks over and offers to shout him and Clive lunch. Shane, however, says they'll have to take a raincheck – they can't work on full stomach and they're behind schedule anyway. Paul walks off, leaving Clive to grumble at Shane that it wouldn't have killed them to have had lunch. Shane just reminds him that they have an agreement. Clive bends down to help Shane move a wheelbarrow – but as Shane lifts the barrow, Clive catches his hand under it and yells out in pain. Shane says quickly that he's sorry. Jack runs over and, taking a quick look, comments that there are no bones broken. Clive mutters that he'll never operate again. Shane points out that he's given up medicine anyway! Clive says he's going to sue for worker's comp. Shane reminds him that he's self- employed. Clive retorts:
CLIVE: Yeah? Then I order myself one hour rest and recreation, starting now. Carry on!
No. 28
Bradley is building a pyramid of glasses when Des arrives home. He sees what Bradley's doing and says to him nervously that they're his only expensive champagne glasses, so why doesn't he put them down? Andrea emerges from her room and shows off her new dress. Des smiles that she looks pretty snazzy. Andrea says she hopes *Paul* thinks so. Des tells her not to go overboard – it *is* just dinner. Andrea, however, reminds him that they agreed to live their own lives. With that, Des asks Bradley if he wants to go outside and kick the footy around before it gets dark. As the two of them go to head out, Des says to Andrea:
DES: Oh, if mum calls, tell her to call me back soon. Apparently she tried to call today, but I was out at lunch.
ANDREA (warily): She rang from Perth?
DES: Yeah, she told Danny she was cutting short her holiday and coming home. Oh – and apparently she made a point of saying g'day to you and she's looking forward to seeing you again.
With that, he and Bradley head outside, leaving Andrea looking worried.
Office of the Daniels Corporation
Paul is giving dictation to Zoe:
PAUL: And it seems reasonable to expect that once the lease on the Coffee Shop expires, we'll be able to acquire the property without undue problems. Um... All tenants have been notified and we expect no trouble there. Trusting this is satisfactory, I remain yours truly, etc. etc.
He asks Zoe to get that off to Rosemary as soon as possible. Zoe mutters that she'll type it in the morning; she might get home on *time* tonight. Paul smiles that he's busy *himself* – he's looking forward to quite a pleasant evening. Zoe glares at him and growls:
ZOE: So much for a conscience.
PAUL (blankly): What?
ZOE: Well, it beats me how you can do this to Daphne and be so... so cold- blooded about it. She's supposed to be a *friend*.
PAUL: Yes, but this is *business*. If there was any other way—
ZOE (dismissively): Oh, sure, sure, sure.
PAUL: I'm telling the truth – I *do* like Daphne – but this is what Rosemary wants, and what Rosemary wants, Rosemary gets.
ZOE (coldly): You're always bragging about how you call the shots around here, but you're not your own boss at *all*.
PAUL (snaps): Look, we all have to answer to *someone*, and the sooner you come to terms with that, the better off we'll both me.
With that, he storms out, leaving Zoe to mutter:
ZOE: What about friendship, hm?

No. 28
Paul knocks on the door and Des lets him in. Paul asks if Andrea's ready to go. Des, however, tells her that she had a migraine; he thinks she's still asleep. At that moment, though, Andrea emerges from her room and says she's fine now. She tells Bradley to be good and she and Paul head out. Des closes the door and joins Bradley at the table, helping him with his model.
No. 22
Zoe heads into No. 22, where Daphne tells her that it's perfect timing – she's got news. Zoe starts to say that so has she. Daphne, however, tells her that she'll have to wait. She goes on:
DAPHNE: I've set the date with Shane!
Zoe hugs her excitedly and exclaims that that's fabulous! Daphne asks her if she's ready to do the old bridesmaid bit again. Zoe beams that she's still got the dress! Daphne, however, says she's superstitious; Zoe will have to buy a new one. Zoe's face drops and she tells Daphne that she can't afford it. Daphne points out that she's been buying dresses all *week*. Zoe replies:
ZOE: Yeah, with that card. Now they won't let me use it again until I pay some of it back.
DAPHNE: So? You've got a job.
ZOE: Yeah, sure, but my salary only covers my bills. *Now*, with the card thing...
She then sighs that she'll work it out. Daphne asks her warily if there's some problem with her job. Zoe murmurs:
ZOE: In a way...
Daphne tells her to hang on to it; she knows things are a bit difficult with Paul, but they both know how hard it is to get a job out there; what would *she* do if the Coffee Shop closed down? Zoe starts trying to tell her again about Paul, but there's suddenly a knock on the front door and Jim comes in, smiling at Daphne that she's monopolising his dinner date. He and Zoe head out.
No. 24
Helen has turned up at No. 24, where the Ramsays are having dinner. She tells Danny that Jim remembered, and she hands him a putter and two balls, adding that if he pops round, Jim will give him some tips. Max asks what all this is, and Danny explains that it's business: say there's a promotion at work, he goes for a round of golf with Des, Des thrashes him and who gets the promotion?! Max says:
MAX: You's all missing the flamin' point: I mean, why ask Jim Robinson when you've got *me*?
DANNY: I thought you'd given golf up, dad.
SHANE: Yeah, you did, too – just after you threw your clubs in the lake, remember!
However, Danny grins at his father that anything he can pass on... He hands Max the putter and everyone heads into the lounge room, where Shane puts a china cup on the floor and Max lines up to putt a ball into it. Everyone pretends to run and hide! Max, however, putts the ball straight into the cup and lets out a cheer of delight!
No. 28
Des admires the model car that Bradley is making and comments that the boy's really got a thing about cars; he might take him to the motor show next week; and a couple of years down the track, he might even teach him how to drive. The front door opens suddenly and Lucy comes in. She says hi to Bradley, but Bradley mutters that he's busy. Lucy asks if she can help, but Bradley retorts that it's not for girls. Des suggests that she could put the tyres on the wheels. Lucy asks when they expect the model to be finished and Des shrugs that it'll probably be the day after tomorrow. Lucy groans:
LUCY: I'll be at school for the mother- and- daughter talk.
BRADLEY (pointedly): You haven't *got* a mother.
LUCY: My grandmother's taking me.
DES: Well, Bradley's going the next time.
LUCY: *He* hasn't got a *father*.
BRADLEY (retorts): I *have* got a father.
LUCY: Not *here*, anyway.
Bradley looks at Des, who says:
DES: Yes he has – he's got *me*.
Lucy sits there open- mouthed and exclaims:
LUCY: Are you *really*?
She then gets up and dashes out to tell everyone!
No. 24
A short time later, Lucy is at No. 24, where Helen asks her sternly where she heard a story like *that*. Lucy beams that Des told her; he wants everyone to know. She dashes off again. Helen puts her fingers to her temples, and Madge realises:
MADGE: It *is*, true, isn't it?
Helen explains that Des told her in confidence – but he chose an odd way to make it public. Max chips in gleefully that *he's* known for quite a while – it looks like Madge is the *last* one to know for once! Madge remarks that it explains why that woman's living there. Max says he thinks Des is doing the right thing.
Lassiter's restaurant
Zoe is sitting at a table with Jim, staring into space. Jim tells her that if she doesn't like the place, they can always find somewhere else. Zoe, however, murmurs that she's fine. Jim then goes on that she was asking his advice last night, but she wasn't giving him all the facts; you get pretty bad advice that way. He adds that if Paul's giving her a hard time, he really would like to know about it. At that moment, the two of them spot Paul and Andrea coming into the restaurant. Jim calls over to them and Paul joins them. He looks at Zoe and asks her coolly if she's seen Daphne. Zoe just replies:
ZOE: I changed my mind.
Paul rejoins Andrea. Jim tells Zoe:
JIM: It's up to you.
No. 24
Shane and Max are searching for one of the golf balls, which has disappeared. Madge warns her brother:
MADGE: If I slip and fall on that golf ball, Max, I'll sue you, brother or no brother.
MAX (rants): Look, if I want to play golf – if I want to play flamin' *polo* – I will. A man's home's his castle.
Danny finds the ball and suggests they set up a driving range in the garage. Madge, however, tells him that they're going to need the garage for Max's furniture. Max glares at her as she goes on that *her* furniture is much more elegant, and heaven knows the place could use it. Danny comments:
DANNY: *Fred's* still got your furniture.
MADGE: Not for long.
MAX: Now look, you're being a bit rough, aren't you, just because Susan's in the family way?
MADGE (coolly): I don't want to hear that woman's name.
Shane says he likes the furniture they've *got*. Danny insists that Madge's is more elegant. Max yells:
MAX: My furniture stays.
Madge just says she's not going to argue – she's made her position quite clear. With that, she heads out with Helen. Max glares at his sons!
No. 28
Helen and Madge have turned up at No. 28 and Des tells Bradley and Lucy to take the model car into the bedroom. When they've gone, Helen says to Des that if Lucy found out by overhearing something she shouldn't... Des, however, says he guesses he's been wanting to say it for a long time. Madge asks what Andrea will think about it. Des replies that she'll be glad – they both share Bradley, but they also both have their separate lives. Helen tells him that she thinks he's done the right thing. Madge asks if Andrea isn't home tonight. Des replies that she's at Lassiter's – she's having dinner with Paul. Helen remarks that that's where Jim and Zoe have gone.

Driveway of No. 22
Shane is washing the car when Daphne emerges from the house, and he offers her a lift from work. She declines. Shane smiles that he won't be able to tell her about the great idea he's got for her pancake competition. Daphne replies glumly that it's off. Shane exclaims that she's started giving out tickets. Daphne tells him coldly:
DAPHNE: That was to save the Coffee Shop – but last night I found out that your mate, Paul Robinson, and his firm are the mystery buyers.
Looking astonished, Shane says he'll have a word with him; tell him to back off. Daphne just shrugs that he's wasting his time: he knows how much Paul has changed since he teamed up with Rosemary Daniels. Shane murmurs that he'll still have a go at him. He then reminds Daphne that they've still got each other. Daphne, however, says:
DAPHNE: That's something else. Do you mind if we put the wedding off for a while?
SHANE (exclaims): What?
DAPHNE: Just until I get things sorted out. I ‘phoned granddad this morning and he thinks we should cut our losses.
SHANE (angrily): To hell with your granddad. You can't be serious about cancelling the wedding.
DAPHNE (snaps): I am *not* cancelling the flaming wedding, Shane. I'm simply asking you to postpone it.
SHANE (mutters): Now it's a ‘flaming' wedding, is it?
Daphne apologises. She tells Shane that she just can't believe what Paul's doing to her, and she appeals to him not to make things any harder for her.
No. 24
Madge is putting her furniture into place in the lounge room when Max comes in and calls to Danny, telling him he wants him to put *his* furniture back. Madge orders Danny to leave it where it is. Danny just mutters at them to let him know when they sort themselves out! He heads off to his room. Max suddenly spots their grandma's old vase. He rants at Madge that it was the one thing he always wanted and she told him for 15 years that it was *Tom* who pinched it. He picks it up and holds it over his head so that Madge can't get to it! Shane comes in and mutters that they've got great neighbours. He explains about Paul being the one behind putting Daphne out of business. Madge exclaims that she doesn't believe it – Paul's his *friend*. Shane retorts:
SHANE: Not anymore.

Paul is sitting at his desk, making a paper aeroplane. Zoe comes in and remarks in surprise that she didn't think he'd be in yet. Paul replies that he didn't think *she'd* be in at *all*. He tells her to sit down. She does so. He then explains that he went to see Daphne last night and he told her he was the one behind the takeover. Zoe replies that Daphne came to see *her* this morning to tell her what she thinks of her – which isn't much. She asks Paul what made him go and talk to Daphne. Paul explains that his dad had a few words – and he was right: he should have had the decency to be straight with friends. He then tells Zoe that he doesn't want her to go – she does a good job, and now that there's no secret about the Coffee Shop, if she'd like to stay he'd be happy. Zoe thanks him.

Eileen turns up at the counter and Danny comments to her in surprise that he thought she was in Perth. Eileen tells him that she came back early. She goes on that she believes Des is in a seminar and she asks Danny if he has a ‘phone number, as she needs to speak to him urgently. Danny goes to his desk and picks up the ‘phone. Meanwhile, Max comes in and chuckles at Eileen:
MAX: How's Ramsay Street's latest grandma, eh?!
Eileen replies coolly that she has no idea what he's talking about. Max tells her that Des has finally admitted that Bradley is his son. Eileen pays him no attention. Danny hands her the ‘phone and Des comes on, saying tersely that this had better be important. Eileen tells him:
EILEEN: I want you to come home right away, please.
DES: No, I can't. Look, I'm in the middle of a seminar.
EILEEN: And *I'm* in the middle of saving you from making an utter fool of yourself. Please, come home.
DES (tersely): Mum, are you dying?
EILEEN: Well of course I'm not!
DES: Well, that is the only reason that I would leave this seminar – and then I'd have to think twice about it.
With that, he hangs up, leaving Eileen looking annoyed.
Lassiter's building site
Jack Lassiter joins Shane and asks how things are going. Shane replies that it's not bad. Jack asks if his mate's hand is still crook. Shane smiles that it is – although Clive fools around so much that you don't know if he's pulling your leg or not. Jack laughs that he still can't get over him being a doctor. Shane muses that you never really can tell with people: one bloke who he thought was a really good mate turned out to be a mongrel. Jack looks around at the work going on and remarks to Shane that it's going to look pretty good when he and Clive have finished with it.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul walks over the bridge and joins Jack outside the pub. Jack comments that's interesting that Paul should make an appointment to meet him when he lives right there in the hotel. They sit down and Paul explains that he thought it was so important that he thought it would be better if they could discuss business quietly. Jack asks what it's about. Paul tells him:
PAUL: I won't beat around the bush, Jack. Look, remember when we first met, you said you might sell up one day? Well, the firm that I work for is in a position to buy you out.

Zoe finishes a ‘phone call to Helen just as Jim comes in. She asks him in surprise what he's doing there. He tells her that she can't expect to get away with a brief telephone call saying she's still working there; what happened? Zoe smiles that he can kiss her – Paul's out on a job! Jim obliges! He then asks again what happened. Zoe tells him that she doesn't know what he said to Paul, but he asked her to stay on, and then he ‘phoned Rosemary and explained everything to her; *now* her only problem is *Daphne*. Jim muses that she'll come round. He offers to talk to her. Zoe suggests that it won't do much good, but Jim tells her to leave it to him! Zoe kisses him, smiling that sometimes she just doesn't know what she'd do without him!
Coffee Shop
Daphne looks at the poster she made, which is stuck on the wall, advertising the pancake competition. Eileen comes in suddenly and Daphne smiles that she *heard* she was back. She asks how Perth was and Eileen replies that she could write a book about it, but she doesn't think anybody would believe her! She then tells Daphne that it was a dark day when she and Desmond didn't get married. Daphne sighs at her to please not start all that again. Eileen comments:
EILEEN: I can't *help* myself. Of all the women he almost married, you were the best! As for that Andrea person, well...
Max comes in as Daphne climbs up on some steps to reach the poster. He comments that she's not taking it down, is she? Daphne retorts that there's no point running a competition for a place that's closing down. Eileen exclaims that it's *closing*? Daphne tells her that the whole *building* is. Max turns to Eileen and beams:
MAX: How's grandma?!
Eileen ignores him and asks Daphne to bring her a coffee over to a table. Max tells Daphne that the trouble with her poster is that she might get reported for advertising a competition that's not taking place; he might have come in just so he could *be* in the competition. Daphne declares:
DAPHNE: Max, if you want a ticket in the draw, you have *got* a ticket in the draw.
Max grins that he knew she wasn't a quitter. He then takes his coffee and goes to join Eileen!
Lassiter's Complex
Jack tells Paul that if he *does* decide to sell, he promises he'll give Paul first option. Paul says he'll draw up the papers for the option. Jack, however, tells him that if his handshake isn't good enough, they won't be doing business; he doesn't need to sign any papers to prove that he's a man of his word. Paul explains that the option is for *Jack's* protection, and Jack reluctantly accepts this. Paul thanks him for his time.
Building site at Lassiter's
Paul walks over to where Shane is working and smiles:
PAUL: Hey, Shane, if you play your cards right, one day you might be working for *me*.
SHANE (mutters): What the hell's *that* supposed to mean?
PAUL (tapping his nose): You'll see!
Shane asks angrily if it's another big secret – like the takeover of Daphne's building. Paul says he's sorry about that, but Shane snaps at him that he doesn't know the *meaning* of the word. He goes on that he doesn't like the way Paul did the dirty on Daphne; in fact, he doesn't like him very much at *all* lately. Paul retorts:
PAUL: Is that right? Tough!
SHANE: Everybody's always making allowances for you because of the fact that your marriage was so screwed up. I think you just like walking over everyone.
PAUL: Yeah, well, you can think what you like.
SHANE: The big businessman, Paul Robinson, hey? If that's what being successful is all about, you can have it.
PAUL (growls): You don't have to worry, Shane, ‘cos *you're* never going to be successful at *anything*. You get upset too easily when things don't go your way – so why don't you just stick to what you're best at: labouring.
Shane suddenly swings at Paul and knocks him to the ground before storming off.
Office of the Daniels Corporation
A while later, Paul is holding a handkerchief to his lip. Zoe comes in and tells him that she got a first- aid kit while she was out, in case he gets into another fight. She asks Paul what Shane hit her with – a shovel?! She puts some cream on his lip as he mutters that this is what you get for apologising for something he shouldn't have apologised for in the first place. Zoe asks him what he means. Paul tells her that it was just a business deal; Daphne's no different from any of the *other* tenants who have to get out of the building. Zoe retorts that she *is* different: she's a *friend*. She then smiles:
ZOE: I don't know... you and Shane fighting like kids! When you came in holding your jaw, I thought old Lassiter must have decked you one!
She finishes putting the cream on his lip. As she smiles at him, Paul looks into her eyes. What appears to be a moment passes briefly between them...
Pacific Bank
Danny is at the counter and calls for the next customer – which is Madge. She asks him for her safe deposit box. Danny goes to find it for her. While she's waiting, Madge takes a small velvet bag out of her handbag and removes a ring from it. She's stares at it. When Danny returns with her safe deposit box, he comments that he *wondered* about that ring: it's been ages since she took it out of the box, and she never wears it. Madge tells him that she had to have the mounting fixed. She then says:
MADGE: Danny, this ring has great sentimental value for me. I'd be very grateful if you didn't tell the rest of the family that I have it.
Danny assures her that anything to do with the bank's business is sacrosanct – it's more than his job's worth. He laughs as he asks if the ring was from a secret lover, but she assures him that it was nothing like that! Changing the subject, she takes a cheque out of her bag and asks Danny to cash it for her. Danny types into a computer – and a look crosses his face. Madge asks if anything is wrong. Danny tells her:
DANNY: You've only got $50 in your account.
MADGE: Yes, I know that, but I only want to draw out twenty.
She stands there looking slightly embarrassed.
No. 28
Bradley heads into No. 28 and Andrea asks him how school was. He smiles that it was good. He then notices the expression on his mother's face and he asks what's wrong. Andrea guides him to the couch and they sit down. She then says:
ANDREA: Bradley, you know that I've always tried to do what's best for you.
BRADLEY: Yeah.
ANDREA: And when we came here, I really thought we'd be happy.
BRADLEY: I *am* happy, mum.
ANDREA: Me too – but Des's mother is back.
BRADLEY: Already?
ANDREA: Yeah. She came back early. She's been nosing around Perth and I would hate to think what she's found out about us.
BRADLEY (firmly): I won't go back to that house, mum.
ANDREA: I won't *let* you; but if Eileen Clarke knows something, we'll have to move on.
BRADLEY (cries): But I want to stay here with Des. I want *him* to be my father.
ANDREA: Oh darling, I know, I want him to be your father too.
There's suddenly a knock on the front door and Eileen walks in. She sits herself down on the couch and says:
EILEEN: Hello, Bradley.
BRADLEY: Hello, grandma!
Ignoring this, Eileen says she ‘phoned Desmond at the bank, but they said he'd already left, so she decided to come over there and get this over with as soon as he comes home. Bradley mutters that they don't *want* her there. Andrea asks if they could discuss this first; if she could only explain... Eileen, however, holds up her handbag and says:
EILEEN: Oh no. What I have in here you have to explain to Desmond.
Coffee Shop
Daphne is sitting reading in a quiet Coffee Shop when Jim comes in. She smiles that she has a customer at last! Jim, however, says he thought she might have time for a quiet chat – about this business with Zoe. Daphne sighs:
DAPHNE: Oh Jim, not again...
Jim tells her that whatever she might think of Zoe right now, Zoe still thinks of *her* as her best friend. Daphne mutters:
DAPHNE: Some friendship.
Jim says if he told Daphne something in confidence, he's prepared to bet his last cent that she wouldn't betray it. Daphne admits that she guesses not. Jim goes on that that was Zoe's dilemma. He adds that Paul's his son and he's doing his very best to understand things from his point of view, but it's not easy. The shop door opens suddenly and Shane comes in. He asks for a word with Daphne and Jim leaves them to it. When he's gone, Shane mutters that he bets Jim was having a whinge about his little boy. Daphne asks why he should whinge. Shane explains:
SHANE: I just punched Paul out.
DAPHNE (exclaims in horror): You punched *Paul*? Why?
She then sighs:
DAPHNE: Look what's happening to us: you... me... Zoe... Paul... I don't want to lose my friends over all of this.
Shane pulls her to him and kisses her on the forehead.
