Jim makes to go into the house but Helen says Julie will need some time on her own, so she sends him off to pick Lucy up.
Helen goes into the house and hugs Julie.

Robinsons
The phone rings and Paul answers it to Mrs Armitage. Helen shakes her head violently to tell Paul she's not there because she's cooking(!) But Mrs Armitage is ringing to say that Jim nearly knocked Bernie Sutton off his bike.
Just then Jim comes in and confirms the accident. He says he'll go round and see his parents later. Lucy says that Bernie Sutton is a nerd(!) Paul says that they never had any trouble on their bikes because Jim lectured them so hard about it!
Suttons
The bell rings and Bob answers it to Jim. Jim offers to talk to Bernie about the rules of the road. Bob doesn't agree - he says the accident was Jim's fault. Jim says he blames Bob for not teaching Bernie the rules of the road. Jim can't understand why Bob won't instruct Bernie properly. Bob says it's safer for Bernie to drive on the right - towards the oncoming traffic. Jim is rather takenaback and tells Bob to get some books on road safety. Then he leaves.
Bob tells his wife that Jim has a guilt complex because he was in the wrong(!)
Des's
Julie comes round the back with a letter and knocks on the back door. She's still upset. When Des answers the door, she gives him the letter and asks him to take it in to the bank - it's her resignation. She tells Des that she and Phil have parted. Des says Julie should just get a transfer to another branch, but Julie says the gossip would be just as bad. Her pride's all she's got left.
The Bank
Outside the bank, Marilyn is gossiping to her mate about Julie. Des sees Phil getting out of his car. Phil says that he's leaving the bank today - he's just been to Head Office. Des tells Phil that Julie is resigning too - Phil is very shocked. He tells Des that it wasn't a sordid little affair - and they both still love each other.
Robinsons
Julie is reading a magazine. Helen advises her to start thinking about another job.
Just then Des comes round to see Julie. He tells her that Phil has resigned from the bank - they'll have George Webster as a manager instead. Des didn't hand in Julie's resignation. Des tells her that Phil left for Julie's sake and she should go back to work. Julie says she can't face the girls at the bank. Helen says she hasn't done anything wrong and she should have enough courage to ride out the gossip.
The Bank
Max is talking to Marilyn about a cheque that's gone missing. He says that computers could make mistakes and goes off into a spiel about the limitation of artificial intelligence(!) Just then, Julie and Des come in. Marilyn asks her with relief to take over with Max - he's blinding her with science! They laugh together.
Ramsays
Max calls out to Maria, but there doesn't appear to be anyone home. He picks up a photo album and looks at picture of him and the boys and Maria in it. He goes to take one of the photos, but just then Maria comes in from the supermarket. He shows her a trophy he's found in a second-hand shop. It's one of Shane's trophies and he's bought it back. They chat quite civilly and look at the photo album. They admit that they did have some happy times. Max says he won't tell Shane about buying this latest trophy - he was mad enough about the first one. He never talks about diving now.
Maria says she's been thinking - it's mad for him and Shane to be living in the bedsit alone. If he wants to come back, maybe Maria could go and stay with Anna. But Max says that the Ramsay house is Maria's home and it's hers for as long as she wants it.
The Bank
It's the end of the working day and Julie thanks Des for everything.
Robinsons
Paul and Scott are making themselves a sandwich with just about every ingredient you can think of in it(!)
Lucy comes in and says she's never talking to Bernie Sutton again. He and another boy are saying that Jim knocked Bernie over because he was drunk and is blaming Bernie to cover up(!) Paul says that Lucy knows that their dad doesn't drink and drive. Helen tells Lucy not to tell Jim and fuel the flames of the argument.
Suttons
Bernie is playing football in the living room and his mother tells him off. Jim comes round with some road safety books. Mrs Sutton rolls her eyes.
Robinsons
Paul is giving the Robinsons a demonstration of the aircraft safety spiel. The Robinsons pretend to be awkward passengers(!)
Just then, Bob Sutton comes round and shouts at Jim about the road safety books. He says Jim should keep his nose out. Jim says that he's tired of parents not explaining to kids about road safety. Bob storms out.
Paul says that maybe Jim does come on a bit strong about road safety. Jim says that Paul's job depends on him giving appropriate safety lectures - he can't see the difference.
Ramsay Street
Bernie Sutton and another boy are having a race - on the wrong side of the road, naturally!
Garden of the Robinsons
Paul and Jim are discussing the garden. Helen and Lucy comes back from the corner shop and tell Jim there's been an accident. Bernie Sutton was riding on the main road. He's been killed.

Recap
Jim advises Bernie Sutton to ride his bike on the left side of the road.
Julie tells Des that she's resigning from the bank.
Helen and Lucy tells Jim that they've heard Bernie Sutton has had an accident - he's been killed riding his bike.
Ramsay Street, some days later
Jim and Maria get out of Jim's car wearing black - they've been to Bernie's funeral. It's even more tragic that Bernie's mother can't have any more children.
Max and Terry drive up in his plumbing van. Max tells Maria that it's a terrible thing about Bernie. Maria asks Max if Shane is angry with her - he hasn't been in touch at all. Max says it's nothing to do with him - he hardly sees Shane himself - most of the time he's out "cavorting with that stripper". Maria asks Max to talk to Shane - Danny misses him if nothing else. Max says he won't interfere - they'll have to sort things out on his own.
Jim sees Danny on the street and they talk about Bernie. Danny tells Jim he's a bit annoyed with Shane - they never see him now since he's moved in with Max.
Just then, Bob Sutton comes over. He's come to thank Jim for coming to the funeral. Also he tells Jim that he owes him an apology - every day of his life he'll regret not listening to Jim's advice about road safety. His son is dead because he told him to ride into the traffic. Jim says that the school is starting a bike training course. Bob appreciates Jim's involvement in this and he recognises his own stupidity. Jim offers his support to Bob and his wife and they shake hands.
When Bob has gone, Paul comes up and tells Jim that he's invited Terry over tonight.
Joan's place
Des is playing with the kids, pretending to be a tiger. The kids obviously love him.
Later, when the kids have gone to play in their room, Des sits down, exhausted. Joan thanks Des for taking them all to the zoo today. Joan says they'll come over to his house on the bus tonight. Des hadn't realised things were so tough. Joan says she gets $280 a fortnight, so there isn't a lot left over for things like taxis. Des says Joan deserves a better deals than that. He gives her money for a cab. Joan says she doesn't want Des to think he's using her, but he says that's the last thing he'd think of her.
Des's
Daphne and Terry are chatting about what Joan might be like. Just as Des and Paul come in, Terry opens a letter and is very pleased by the contents. Her divorce has come through!
They all tease Des about his date this evening. Des plays along saying that "Rod and Jane" are coming too. The others take Rod and Jane to be adults, so they look very worried when Des says Rod and Jane will be wanting to get straight into bed so he'd better go and make it up(!)
Max's bedsit
Shane answers the door to Danny. He's pleased to see him. Danny gets straight to the point and says that Shane is upsetting Maria by not coming round. Shane says he didn't know he was upsetting her - he's just been a bit thoughtless. He says he'll make things up with Maria.
Danny asks how things are at the bedsit. Shane says it's awful living conditions, but if he doesn't stand by Max, who will? Shane has wrapped up a present for Max. He tells Danny it's his secret weapon.
Des's
Joan and the kids are there and have been introduces to Paul, Terry and Daphne. They're all getting along well playing animal games. Paul and Terry head off. Paul tells Des that Joan seems really nice.
Daphne heads off too. She tells Des quietly to be careful - Des is a pretty good catch for someone in Joan's situation.
When everyone has gone, Des and Joan sit down happily together. Joan says she was really nervous about meeting Des's friends, but they are nice people.
Ramsays
Maria and Danny are watching television when the phone rings - it's Shane. He invites Maria to go out to dinner with him tomorrow night. She is very pleased and accepts. Shane tells her it's about time they had a bit of a chat.
Danny has only heard one side of the conversation so Maria winds him up saying she's going out for dinner with a young man. He doesn't look pleased, but Maria lets him off the hook and tells him she's going out with Shane. Danny looks very relieved.
Max's bedsit
Max has just come back from the pub. Shane gives him the present. It's an anti-snoring pillow. Max refuses to use it, but Shane says Max could just try it. Max has a go at Shane for always going out with Daphne. Shane says that he's going out with Maria tomorrow night. He tells Max that he should get his life organised - he can't go on living in the bedsit forever. If he really wants a divorce from Maria, he's got to start enjoying life again and not fighting it.
Des's
Des has rung a taxi to pick up Joan and the kids. Joan thanks Des for a wonderful dinner. Des asks Joan how she'd feel about moving in with him. He knows it's a bit impulsive but he's fallen in love with Joan. Joan looks a bit shocked. She says she doesn't know if she loves Des yet - she can't move in with him though, because of the kids. The kids need stability, even if it is just her and the flat. If she moved in with someone, she'd have to be sure - sure enough to marry someone at least. She wants them to carry on the way they are, to see how things turn out.
Robinsons
Paul and Terry are chatting about Des and Joan. Terry is a bit despondent about marriage - she and Joan are both divorced, and Max and Maria nearly are. Paul asks Terry about Shane again, but she says she doesn't love Shane any more. They have a pash, but just then Des comes round and interrupts them.
DES: What a woman!
Des sits between Paul and Terry and invites himself for a coffee(!) When Terry has gone to make it, Paul tells him off for having the worst sense of timing(!)
Des tells Paul that he's head-over-heels in love with Joan and doesn't know what to do. He says if you're in love you shouldn't hang about. They both look thoughtful. Des thanks Paul for helping him to make up his mind. Paul says that Des has helped him to make up his mind too.

Recap
Bob apologises to Jim for not taking his advice on road safety - now his son is dead.
Des and Joan are getting on well.
Shane gives Max an anti-snoring pillow as a present. He isn't amused.
Des and Paul chat about marriage.
Des's
Des is ironing and whistling along to the radio, waking Daphne up. She isn't too chuffed, but Des is on top of the world. Eventually she turns the radio off and asks Des what's wrong with him!
Daphne was at a bucks' party last night - she says she hates it. Des says women are just as bad when they go to strip clubs. Daphne says Des could go into stripping if he wanted too(!)
DAPHNE: At least when women have a night out, they don't carry on like a load of inebriated orang-utangs. It's enough to put you off marriage for life.
DES: Oh, I don't know!
DAPHNE: What do you mean?!
DES: Oh, just making an observation.
Daphne asks if Des is getting involved with that "Langdon woman" and enquires after Mr Langdon. Des says that Joan is divorced. Daphne asks Des how much he really knows about Joan - she intimates that Joan might be using Des as a meal ticket. Des is cross. He tells Daphne that actually, he invited Joan to move in with him and she said no! Daphne isn't pleased - what would have happened to her if Joan had said yes?! They quarrel a bit and Daphne starts shouting. Des shouts back that he won't let anyone ruin his life.
Terry catches the end of this argument and says that Daphne is behaving like a jealous wife. She says that Daphne seems to think she owns Des. Daphne says she's just worried about Des. Now it's Terry's turn to storm out.
DAPHNE: I'm not jealous! (door slams) I'm just tired, that's all. She lies down on the sofa for a snooze.
Max's bedsit
Max is sorting out Shane's clothes and tells him to be a bit tidier. Shane jokes about Mrs Harris who also lives in the block - she's always inviting Max round to "have a look at her plumbing". Max says that if he did want a woman, he'd give Shane a run for his money!
Just then, Terry comes in. She's surprised that Shane is going out with Daphne tonight.
Ramsays
Shane comes in and finds Danny watching TV. He creeps up on him and gives him a scare. He's come to pick Maria up to take her out to dinner. Shane suggests that Danny comes with them, but Danny says that Maria and Shane need a chance to talk on their own. Anyway, Danny is going to Scott's for dinner.
Shane and Maria head off.
Robinsons
Danny comes in and goes through to Scott's room to say hello.
Posh Restaurant
Maria and Shane have arrived at a posh restaurant. She thinks it's a bit expensive, but Shane tells her to relax and enjoy herself. They order oysters, beef wellington and baby strawberries for dessert...
Max's bedsit
...meanwhile Max is eating cold baked beans out of a tin. Just then, Mrs Harris comes round. She tells Max she's grateful for his help the other day. One of her tenants gave her a bottle of champagne for doing some cleaning for him, but she can't get it open. Max helps her to get the cork out. Mrs Harris notices that Max is eating beans and invites him to have some of her cooking - she's got loads.
Posh restaurant
Shane tells Maria that Max needs her more than he does at the moment - that's the only reason he's moved out. Besides, Maria has still got Danny. Maria would like to see more of Shane. Shane says he still loves Maria and he's not taking sides between her and Max. A woman interrupts just then and offers Shane to buy a rose for his "lady-friend". She comments that Shane and Maria make a "lovely couple". Shane and Maria laugh.
Max's bedsit
Mrs Harris has done Max proud. She's an old lady and is clearly pleased to have someone to share her meal with. Max tucks in and they chat about kids and their morals these days. Max says he blames Maria for spoiling the kids rotten. He says he believes in sitting down and talking things through.
MAX: I'm a reasonable man, Edith.
Posh restaurant
MARIA: Your father would be the most unreasonable person I've ever known.
Shane agrees - Max can be a bit pig-headed. Maria says if they could sit down and talk things through quietly, things might have been different. But now, there's no going back. Maria says she sometimes feels sorry for Max - sitting in a bedsit on her own. She suggests calling in on the way home to cheer Max up. Shane says there's no cheering Max up when he's in one of his moods.
SHANE: He'll be sitting at home, alone, feeling sorry for himself.
Max's bedsit
Max and Edith are having a great evening and laughing raucously at Max's plumbing stories. They are getting through the champagne quite well. Edith says they should eat together more often, rather than eating on their own all the time. They're clearly a bit drunk - not least because Edith put brandy in the meal. She comes and sits on Max's lap(!) and they both start singing.
Just then Maria and Shane come in and look rather shocked.
Robinsons
Jim isn't pleased that Scott is working at the Coffee Shop again - he doesn't want him neglecting his studies. Danny tells Jim that he's interested in going in to engineering or architecture. Jim offers him some books. Lucy comes out and says she's planning to be an actress. Helen sends her back to bed.
Danny heads off, thanking Helen for dinner.
Ramsays
Maria is very angry and says she'll never waste her time feeling sorry for Max again. Shane thinks it was quite funny. As he leaves, Maria thanks Shane for a wonderful evening, and asks Shane if he'd like to come back home again. Shane says he can't, but he'll let her know if he changes his mind.
Robinsons, the following morning
Helen is emptying Lucy's schoolbag. Jim is surprised at Danny's maths marks - Helen asks Jim why he doesn't offer Danny a job in the summer holidays. Jim says he was going to offer it to Scott, but Helen warns him not to try to push Scott into engineering, as he tried to do with Paul. Just then, Helen finds a very sticky letter in Lucy's bag. Jim opens it delicately and reads it. He says they've got a problem with Lucy.

Recap
Des and Daphne row about Des and Joan's relationship.
Maria feels a bit sorry for Max being all alone. She and Shane call round to Max, only to find him drunk with one of his neighbours(!)
Helen finds a letter in Lucy's bag. Jim opens it and says they have a problem with Lucy.
Robinsons
Apparently Lucy has got an eye problem and the teacher wants Jim to take her to a specialist. Jim hopes Lucy hasn't inherited his problem - he had to wear glasses for a year when he was a kid and hated it. Jim says he'll take the day off work to take Lucy to the optician.
Joan's place
Joan is a bit preoccupied. Des gets her to tell him what's wrong by tickling her(!) Joan tells Des that she has to move out of the flat - the owner wants to move back in. She says she'll find somewhere but she's only got four weeks. Des says he'll help her sort it out.
Robinsons, the following morning
Helen tells Lucy that she's not going to school today. She's initially pleased, but when she hears she's going to the optician she is suspicious. She says there's nothing wrong with her eyes, but Helen says it's just a checkup.
Opticians
Lucy has had her test with the optician and tells Jim excitedly about it. Apparently Lucy has a very slight astigmatism - it's nothing to worry about. But she'll have to wear glasses for a while, so things don't get worse when she gets older. Lucy isn't all that chuffed on the idea, but goes off with Helen to look at frames.
Later at the Robinsons
Lucy is wearing bright red glasses and is on the phone to a friend of hers. Apparently Lucy has been picked to be Sleeping Beauty and Simon Bond is going to be Prince Charming! She's very pleased indeed. Scott says that he's never seen Sleeping Beauty wearing glasses(!) Lucy looks a bit downcast so he hastily reassures her that she looks beautiful in her glasses. Lucy is upset - she thinks people are going to laugh at her. She takes off her glasses and bangs them on the table.
Helen comes in and Scott tells Helen what happened. Helen goes off to try to repair the damage.
(Later)
Jim isn't pleased with Scott - he tells him he'd better fix things with Lucy or else. Lucy is still sulking. Scott tries to tell her that he was just teasing about the glasses.
Lucy refuses point blank to take the glasses to school because they might not let her play Sleeping Beauty. Helen rings up the teacher to ask her what the situation is. The teacher explains to Lucy on the phone that it's fine for her to still play Sleeping Beauty. Lucy happily puts her glasses back on and heads off to school.
(After school)
Lucy has taken her glasses off again. She says that she doesn't want to be Sleeping Beauty any more. Apparently Simon Bond called her "four-eyes" and other names. She says that Simon won't kiss her in the play and that's the whole point of Sleeping Beauty - to be woken with a kiss.
LUCY: I wish I was dead!
(In the evening)
Scott heads off to see Danny while Lucy reads her book without her glasses. She admits that some words go a bit blurry and she gets a headache sometimes though. Jim says she has to wear her glasses to help her out. Lucy goes over to borrow something for a school project from Daphne.
Des's
Lucy and Daphne have a bit of a chat. Lucy suddenly looks interested in Daphne's reading glasses. They chat about glasses and whether men still ask Daphne out. Daphne says that of course they do. Lucy explains about the school play and Daphne says that Simon doesn't sound like much of a Prince Charming(!) Daphne suggests that maybe the play could get another Prince Charming instead of another Sleeping Beauty - one that doesn't mind kissing Lucy.
DAPHNE: It's something ever woman learns at some stage in her life. Men take a lot longer to grow up.
LUCY: I know what you mean.
Lucy heads off with the stuff for her project.
Joan's place
The kids are in bed now. Joan still looks worried but Des cheers her up a bit. Joan says that Des is very good to her - a divorcee with two children.
Des sits Joan down to ask her something. In fact, he gets down on his knees.
DES: I've been thinking about this for a while. And...um...how would you feel about marrying me, Joan?
JOAN: I'm very flattered that you've asked me.
DES: But...?
JOAN: I've got to be completely honest with you Des. I like you a lot. Better than any man since my husband. But it's not love. Not yet, anyway.
Des looks a bit downcast. He says that Joan could love him in time, but Joan doesn't want to rush into another commitment - Des needs a wife who can give him 100% emotionally. Joan isn't ready for that yet.
Des asks Joan if she could come to love him in time. She thinks she could - she thinks any woman could. Des thinks that that's enough to give it a go.
DES: Look, I love you, very much. And I want to look after you and the kids.
JOAN: Well...if you can accept what I've told you. I am very fond of you.
DES: Does that mean yes?!
JOAN: It sure does!
DES: Great!
He pins Joan down on the sofa for a kiss!
Robinsons, the following morning
Lucy is in a good mood this morning, and puts her glasses on. She tells Helen she's better get another paid with tinted lenses, so she doesn't have to squint on sunny days.
JIM: What brought this on?
LUCY: Dad, do you think I'm sexy?!
JIM: Er...yes, very...
Helen asks if Lucy had a revelation in the night(!) Lucy explains that she and Daphne had an in-depth talk about men and women. Helen says Jim had better buy Daphne a nice bunch of flowers!

Des's
Daphne is arranging the flowers from Jim in a vase while chatting to Helen. She laughs at the card which could be easily mis-interpreted - "Thanks for last night, love Jim"! Daphne says she was beginning to think she'd been sleep-walking!
As Helen is leaving, Des comes in. Daphne says Des is looking pleased with himself. He explains that he's proposed to Joan. Daphne doesn't look very chuffed and starts to stalk off to her room. She says she'll start looking for a place tomorrow. Daphne says she doesn't want to be hanging around when Joan and the kids are there - it won't be her home any more.
Daphne says Des doesn't need her approval. Des says that Daphne is his best mate - he thought she'd be happy for him. Daphne realises she's been carrying on like a selfish brat and wishes Des well. She says they'll always be mates.
Daphne asks if Des has told Eileen yet(!) - he'll have to tell her at some point. Des says he's going to go next door and tell the Robinsons.
DES: I'm really going to miss your cooking, kid.
He kisses her on the cheek and heads off.
DAPHNE: I'm gonna miss you, mate.
Robinsons
Helen is sketching Jim in the kitchen. Des comes in with Lucy and tells them that he'd got engaged to Joan. Everyone is very pleased and Jim offers him a beer. Des explains that Joan has twins, and Lucy is excited that there'll be more kids in the street.
Apparently Des has to wait four weeks to get married. Jim and Helen offer Des to have a small engagement party at their house. They all toast Des.
Des's
Daphne is trying unsuccessfully to hang a picture. Daphne tells Terry about Des's engagement. Terry is surprised, but pleased. Daphne says they'll have to move out, but they're both used to moving a lot by now. They talk about sharing together, but Daphne says she finds living with girls gets complicated - she'd rather live with a guy or on her own.
Max's bedsit
Terry comes round to pick Max up and tells him about Des's engagement. Max says that he'll believe that when he sees it - Des has a record of getting stood up at weddings(!) They chat about Max's love life - Terry says Max doesn't have much of a beer gut, so could attract women quite well! Max tells her to mind her own business(!) but when she's gone out to the van, he hurries to the mirror to check out his stomach(!)
Ramsays
Danny answers the phone to a man from Radio 12 called Edward Campbell. I don't think he's really from the Radio though as he seems to be calling from a phone box(!) He tells Danny that he can win a prize if he answers a question. Danny answers the question with some help from Maria and is told he's won some tickets for a show. The man takes down his address and says he'll have the tickets round to Danny within an hour. Danny is veyr pleased. Oh dear, this doesn't sound good.
Robinsons
Danny comes round looking for Scott. He tells Helen and Lucy about the radio quiz and him winning the tickets.
Des's
Daphne is looking through the paper for a flat. Des says he's doing Daphne a favour in a way - she's getting staid and settled living with him(!)
Danny comes round to congratulate Des on his engagement, but Des has just gone out. Daphne tells Danny to take a seat - she's got something to tell him about Des and Joan.
Ramsays
Maria is getting ready to go to the show with Danny. She's even called a taxi as a surprise for him.
Max's bedsit
Max is pacing the floors trying to occupy himself by cleaning up. He turns on the television but there's nothing on.
MAX: Strewth, who am I kidding?
He goes to the phone and rings the Ramsay house.
Ramsays
Maria and Danny are just heading out, so decide to ignore the phone.
Max's bedsit
Max goes sadly back into his bedsit.
(Later)
Max leaps up to answer the phone, hoping it's Maria, but it's Jim. Jim invites him round for a chat and a catch-up. Max says he'll make his own way to Jim's - he could do with the exercise anyway.
Show
Maria and Danny are having a great time.
Max's bedsit
Max heads off. Before he goes he calls Maria one last time. The man from the radio show answers the phone - he's clearly broken in (why is he answering the phone?!) He tells Max that Maria is in the shower, and Max bangs the phone down. The bloke's accomplice tells him they should just get on with it.
Des's
Daphne tells Terry that she's had a word with Danny about relationships. She says that Danny could grow up to be a charming young man.
TERRY: Just like his brother!
Daphne looks a bit surprised.
Robinsons
Max has arrived, but is in a bit of a bad mood. Jim gets him a beer. Max, Helen and Jim chat about Des's engagement. Max is cynical about marriage, and also Shane's relationship with Daphne. Suddenly Max gets angry - Maria is with a different man every night. Jim and Helen are confused - they know that Maria has gone to the theatre with Danny tonight. Max says he knows that she hasn't. They agree to disagree.
(Later)
Max is heading off home, thanking Jim for a nice evening.
When Max has gone, Jim and Helen think that Max is obsessed with the idea of Maria seeing other men.
Outside the Ramsays
Maria and Danny are back from the show. They've really enjoyed it and Maria thanks Danny for taking her.
When they go into the house though, they find it has been ransacked.

Jim gets suspicious about the theatre tickets they won - it sounds like a bit of a coincidence. He suggests Danny rings the radio station to check.
Maria says they are insured, but her jewellery is irreplaceable. She thinks about it and thinks she didn't lock the deadlocks properly - would that affect their claim?
Danny comes back from ringing the radio station - they don't know anything about free tickets.
Ramsays, the following morning
The place has been tidied up. A man comes round to see Maria from the insurance. His name is Richard Morrison. They chat about the deadlocks and he says there's no mention of them in the policy - the deadlocks were installed after they took out the policy. He says he won't mention them to the company if Maria doesn't. Maria is very relieved. She offers him a cup of coffee but he says that perhaps they could have one when they're finished with the work.
Des's
Des is shocked that Maria forgot to put the deadlocks on.
DAPHNE: Des. What are you going to do about your mother?
DES: Volunteer her as an astronaut?
Daphne wants to know if Des is going to tell her that he's getting married.
DAPHNE: Is she coming to the engagement party?
DES: I thought I'd keep it as a happy affair.
Daphne thinks Des is being unreasonable. She thinks maybe Eileen is lonely and only acts that way to get attention. Des says she's a selfish, moralistic old cow and tells Daphne not to get sucked in by Eileen.
Ramsays
Maria and the insurance man are chatting in a friendly way. The claim is looking quite good. He's surprised that Maria has grown up children. Maria explains that she was married too young and she and her husband are separated. She shows Richard out. On the doorstep, he asks Maria if he can take her out to dinner. Maria accepts and they agree on tonight.
Robinsons - front garden
Helen is painting when Maria comes up to ask what she can make for the party. Helen notices Maria's good mood and she explains about the good insurance claim. Helen picks up on "Richard" and Maria admits that she's going out to dinner with him tonight. Helen is quite pleased - it's just dinner.
Ramsays
Maria is getting ready to go out. Danny is moping round - all his electronic stuff has been stolen. Maria suggests that he gets on with study - he's got exams in a couple of weeks. Danny thinks Maria is going out with Richard to get more on the insurance claim(!)
Restaurant
Maria and Richard have arrived. They chat over dinner about their ex-spouses - Richard too is separated from his wife, divorced in fact. But he never had kids and that's something he'll always regret. Maria thins they are getting a bit personal considering they've only just met.
Outside the Ramsays
Richard is saying goodnight to Maria. He kisses her hand.
Ramsays
Danny is studying when Maria comes in. Maria doesn't think that she'll be seeing Richard again. Danny thinks he was a bit of a dag anyway! Maria says they didn't have very much in common.
The phone rings and it's Richard calling from a telephone box down the street! Maria tells him she enjoyed herself and agrees to see him again on Friday night. She tells Danny she's changed her mind(!)
Des's, the following morning
Terri is showing Daphne the dress she's going to wear to the party. They chat about Des's engagement and Eileen. Daphne's not sure that Joan even knows that Eileen has got a mother(!)
Joan's place
Joan tells Des that the kids are at the babysitters. She's a bit nervous about meeting Des's friends. Des gives her a present - an engagement ring. They have a pash.
Robinsons
The party is in full swing, but Des and Joan haven't arrived yet.
Helen asks Maria about her date.
Des and Joan arrive and Des introduces her to everyone. The girls admire her engagement ring, all apart from Julie who says Des should have got a diamond, not a sapphire(!)
The boys talk about Des's bucks night and says they'll have to get another stripper because Daphne's "family" now!
Des asks Paul to be his best man again and he accepts happily.
Later, Jim makes a toast to Des and Joan. Des makes a speech too. He tells them they've all become like family to him and that he thinks he's got the right girl in Joan. Julie looks a bit upset as he makes a toast.
Jim follows Julie into the living room and finds her trying not to cry. He talks to her sympathetically and says she shouldn't bottle up the thing with Phil, it's not good for her. He tells her that lots of relationships don't work out, but she can't allow that to make her bitter. Julie says that the pain is too much to bear.
JULIE: Dad - is this how you felt about Anna?
She apologises profusely to Jim. He says that sometimes you have to be philosophical about these things. Julie starts to sob and cries in Jim's arms. She feels like she'll never be happy again.

Des is pleased, but says that there are a couple of things still to sort out.
First, he won't be able to keep subsidising Eileen after he's married, so he wants Eileen to start looking for a part-time job. It's not healthy for her to sit around all day - she needs to get out and meet people. He wants Eileen to stop building her whole world around Des and find her own life. PAUL: I thought a lot about what you said last night...and...well...to be honest, the more I thought about it, the more I thought I didn't want you to go. You see, I love you, Terry. I love you very much. And I thought...if it's a good idea...(he gets down on one knee)...I think we should get married.
TERRY: Married?
Terry says she can't give Paul an answer, only a "don't know". She tells Paul he means a lot to her but she needs some time - marriage is a big decision. Paul says she can have until that evening(!) because he really needs to know. He says proposing was a lot harder than he thought it would be!

Eileen says that she and Malcolm were together six years, and ten before Des was born: they planned everything. Helen points out that Eileen didn't plan her divorce. She says she doesn't mean to be cruel, but the best laid plans can go awry at any stage.
Eileen goes to make another cup of tea, much to Helen's horror!

JIM: I thought you said you were thirsty.
LUCY: This sounds more interesting.
JIM: Off you go.
Jim asks Scott about his career and whether he's thought about it. Scott says he hasn't really. Jim asks Scott about the work experience and whether he wants to work with him.
LUCY:(reappearing) I would be very interested.
JIM: Yes, but you're too young Lucy.
LUCY: But smart!
JIM: Sorry kiddo, they're only interested in kids that are about to leave school.
LUCY: I'm prepared to leave school.
JIM: No, Lucy, now off you go.
Scott asks Jim if he'd be disappointed if he says no, but Jim says it's his call.
In the kitchen, Paul is ironing a shirt to wear that evening. Scott asks him about the work experience thing. Paul says it's up to Scott - he shouldn't worry if Jim is disappointed, it's his life.
Restaurant
Paul and Terry are eating their meal. Terry puts down her fork and tells Paul she's thought of nothing but his proposal all day.
PAUL: Well?
TERRY: I care a lot about you, Paul. More than you probably realise. But I'm not ready for marriage.
PAUL: How about if I ask you next week...
TERRY: Oh, please, don't.
Terry says she doesn't want to lose Paul, but she can't say yes when she's not 100% sure. She admits she is still a bit tempted though.

(Is it me?! Terry apparently changed her mind between the car and the Robinsons front door?!!)
