Recap
Douglas tells Helen that he'd like them to spend some time together.
Danny finds a letter in Bess's stuff and shows it to Scott in shock.
Robinsons
DANNY: Why didn't you tell me she was dying?
Scott is very shocked and says it can't be true. He isn't sure what to do now - but resolves to tell Bess that he's found the letter.
In the living room, Jim and Bess are chatting about how much living she's packed into her life. Lucy asks Bess to help her with her computer programming homework. (Lucy's school must have been very progressive for 1985!)
Scott asks Bess for a private word in his room. He asks Bess if the letter is true and she confirms that it is. She didn't want the family to find out. She says she doesn't want treatment - there's far too many things left to do, and she doesn't want to spend her remaining time in hospital. She tells Scott that everyone has to die one day and she has lived a full and happy life. She doesn't want anyone to worry and creep around her - she wants them to behave as they always have. Scott protests that the family could spend more time with her, but Bess says they should do that because they want to, not because she's dying. She asks Scott to keep the secret from the rest of the family and he eventually agrees. They start to chat about Bess's time in Asia. Bess suggests a slide night and Scott is very keen to do it that very night.
In the living room, Scott asks Jim if they can have the slideshow tonight, but Jim and Julie have other plans for the evening. Helen suggests tomorrow night instead.
When Bess has gone, Jim tells Scott that he's wrong to press them all into doing things with Bess. Scott says that Jim doesn't care about Bess. He says Bess isn't interested in anything Jim has done for a reason - Jim hasn't done anything!
Ramsay Street, the following morning
Scott and Danny are talking about Bess's illness. Scott wants to tell Jim what's going on, or he might never have any more chances to spend time with Bess.
No.32
Scott and Danny call round to see Paul and Terry. Terry agrees happily to the slideshow idea. Paul isn't too chuffed but Terry talks him round.
When Scott and Danny have gone, Paul and Terry have a pash (ahhhh newlyweds)
The Bank
A man is taking Helen's exhibition paintings down while Julie and Helen chat about Scott. Helen is surprised that someone bought one of her paintings. Just then Douglas comes up and admits that he bought it. Then he invites Helen out to have a coffee.
Cafe Caprice
Douglas tells Helen that she reminds him of his late wife a bit. He misses her, but "one can't keep looking back". Helen insists that Douglas should have the painting as a gift (it is a painting of Helen).
Douglas tells Helen that he's having trouble getting a suitable venue for Helen's exhibition - everywhere suitable seems to be booked out. Helen says it doesn't matter - it was mostly to please the family anyway. But Douglas says that he believes Helen deserves an exhibition.
HELEN: There's more to life than exhibitions.
DOUGLAS:(taking her hand) Yes, there certainly is.
Robinsons
Helen is painting Bess's portrait. Bess probes about Helen's relationship with Douglas - she thinks that Helen should move things along. Helen wonders where she'd be now if she hadn't move in with the Robinsons. Not that she regrets it - she's loved her life with them.
Scott comes in and asks Bess quietly if she'll consider telling Jim about her illness. She's adamant that she won't though.
Ramsays
Scott comes round to see Danny - he looks completely gutted. He doesn't know what to do - maybe he should just tell Jim anyway. Danny says it's Bess's decision, even if it's the wrong one. He says Scott can't let Bess down. Scott isn't sure what's right anymore.
Robinsons
Bess tells Helen that she went through a stage when she nearly settled down. She says it's a terrible thing - it makes interesting people become very boring.
Scott sets up the slide projector and Lucy gets in the way. He shouts at her. Bess tells Scott not to take things out on Lucy.
Later at the Robinsons
Bess is showing slides of her adventures in Asia. She shows many pictures of people and places all over Asia. There's a photo of Jim on one of the slides. They get on to talking about parents leaving their children when they were little. Terry says that she doesn't want children very much and Paul gets a bit upset. He takes Terry off home.
HELEN: Well...uh...coffee, anyone?
Lucy says that she doesn't want to have children and a conversation about women having careers ensues. Bess says that Jim never felt neglected just because she was away. But Jim puts her straight - he did.
JIM: I felt unwanted and unloved for most of my childhood thanks to your precious career.
No.32
Terry can't see why having kids is so important to Paul. Paul says he wants a son to carry on his name. Terry gets upset - her own father never forgave her for being a girl. Paul says that Terry has a lot of hang-ups and maybe they should have talked about this before they were married. Terry starts to cry and Paul calms down a bit. He hugs Terry and says he'll take her out for supper.
Robinsons
JIM: I desperately wanted a normal mother. One that would be there when I got home from school. I really envied those other kids - you know, the normal ones.
Jim says he never knew where he'd be from one week to the next because Bess kept going off on her travels.
BESS: I thought you enjoyed the variety.
JIM:(angrily) You didn't think at all, Mum. You just assumed that because you liked our lifestyle, I would too. But I didn't want a part-time adventuress for a mother. I wanted to be normal!
Bess insists that Jim was never neglected. Jim insists that he only wanted his mother to BE there. He says that he and Bess will never understand each other - and he can't even be bothered trying anymore.

Recap
Douglas can't find a place for Helen's exhibition.
Jim rows with his mother.
Robinsons, the following morning
Helen thinks Jim should apologise to Bess, but Jim says there's nothing to apologise for. Helen says that Jim could have been kinder in his words, but he says he can't take it back now. He says his mother should have been more like Anne was, but Helen says that everyone is different. Jim says that he'll talk to Bess next time she's in town. Helen tells him to talk to her before she leaves. Jim says he's off on a business trip anyway.
When Jim has gone, Scott comes into the kitchen and starts moping around. He's upset that Bess is leaving. He says he'll never forgive Jim for sending her away.
Scott's room
Scott is upset.
Kitchen
Helen tells Jim that Scott is very upset. Jim doesn't want to talk about Bess - he says she's always come and gone whenever she pleases. Helen says that Jim has hurt Bess terribly and he shouldn't be so angry. Helen urges him to call Bess. Jim says he'll call from work if he has time.
HELEN: Make time!
Ramsays
Shane asks Danny if he'd like a driving lesson this afternoon - but in the van, not the work Mercedes. Danny doesn't think Max will lend the ban.
Just then, Max comes in and Shane puts the question to him.
MAX: Promise not to break it? OK.
Danny is surprised but pleased. He tells Shane that Max is getting more and more human every day!
Outside No.32
Paul and Terry are saying goodbye - Paul is off to the airline. Shane offers Paul a lift in the company car - he's got to go into the city anyway.
Ramsays
Max rings Miss Drew in the French department. They row about Max doing Danny's homework for him.
MAX: How dare you fail me! My French is better than yours anyday. I want a re-mark!
MISS DREW: I beg your pardon, Mr Ramsay? I got my degree at the Sorbonne in Paris.
MAX: Yeah, well I learnt mine from a Czechoslovakian! Now you can't get any more foreign than that, can you!
Miss Drew says that Max's French isn't that good and she won't give him a re-mark. She also accuses Max of being the type of plumber that charges exorbitant prices for shoddy work. She says that all plumbers are crooks and thieves.
Max takes exception at this, but Miss Drew hangs up.
MAX: Flaming teachers!
MISS DREW: Hate plumbers!
Robinsons
Terry comes in and apologises about Paul's bad words last night. Helen says that was nothing compared to the rest of the ructions last night!
Terry admits that she hasn't really thought about having children and Helen warns Terry not to let Paul talk her into it if it isn't what she wants. Terry invites Helen to come into town with her to go window shopping and have a bit of lunch.
Just then Douglas rings up. He invites Helen to meet him later. Helen asks Terry if they can make it tomorrow - Douglas has found a gallery for her exhibition!
No.32
Dodgy Charles approaches the house and knocks on the door. Terry answers it, but with the chain on. She won't let him in despite his protests. Charles says that Terry is putting them both in danger by hanging on to the tape. Terry says that he having it keeps him from harming her.
She lets him in and she says she won't give him the tape. He says that "Robert" will kill them both if he realises that the tape even exists. Charles says that Terry is on the tape too, but she insists she didn't do anything. Charles says that Robert is killing people for less than they are doing. He says he'll lose everything if the tape comes into the open.
CHARLES: I won't give up.
TERRY: And I won't give in.
A Coffee Shop
Helen is really pleased about the gallery - apparently, it's perfect. Douglas says he'll start organising programmes and publicity - and he'll pay for it all.
Also, Douglas has a proposition for Helen - a day in the country with a picnic to get to know each other properly. She agrees, but later in the week, when Bess has left Erinsborough - she wants to be around until then.
Solicitor's Office
Bess is signing some forms. The solicitor, Edward, tells Bess that he'll miss her. Bess says that she's cheated better odds before - she might even stay round for years.
EDWARD: It'll be a greyer world without you, my dear.
Bess asks Edward to keep something for Jim - his father's war medals. She takes out the war correspondent badge out though, to give to Scott. They chat about families and Bess says that Jim has suffered more than she'd realised. She can't excuse herself - she should have noticed Jim's resentment.
EDWARD: He loves you.
BESS: I hope so.
Scott's room
Danny is moaning that Miss Drew gave him a hard time in class today(!) He's excited about his driving lesson, but Scott is distracted. Danny guesses that it's about Bess. Scott says that he can't let Bess go without his father knowing about her illness.
Just then Bess comes in and Danny heads off for his driving lesson. Bess gives Scott her war correspondent badge. He thanks her, but wishes she didn't have to give it to anybody. Scott asks Bess to stay - it's only Jim that's driving her away.
SCOTT: I might never see you again.
BESS: There has to be a last time for everything.
Bess says she's been along time, and her instinct is telling her to go. They hug. Scott asks her to stay for dinner tonight, but Bess won't. She suggests a farewell dinner for tomorrow.
Ramsay Street
Danny gets into the van, but Shane has to go back into the house to answer the phone.
(Later)
Max comes up the street and finds the van empty with a big scratch up to the side of it.
MAX: Danny!
Ramsays
Max comes in in a temper, and this isn't helped by Miss Drew ringing at that moment! She asks him for a truce.
MAX: Oh year? What's in it for me?
MISS DREW: Er...possible re-marking of your French essay?
MAX:(suspiciously) What's in it for you, then?
MISS DREW: A plumber that might be able to fix the knock in my drain pipes.
MAX: Ha! You've got a cheek!
He agrees to the deal though - providing she does the re-mark fair and square.
He puts the phone down.
MAX: The old battleaxe! I'll fix her pipes, alright!
He hasn't realised as viewers have that Miss Drew is actually attractive and fairly young! Do I see romance on the horizon?!
MAX:(remembering) DANNY!
Robinsons
Danny is playing chess in the kitchen. Scott is upset about Bess's condition, but he doesn't feel angry about it all anymore. He hopes that Bess will tell Jim the truth before she leaves.
Jim is looking for a folder and ropes Scott in to help.
Max comes in and immediately starts shouting at Danny about the van. Jim admits that it was him - he swerved because Basil was on the road. He asks Max to get him a quote and he'll fix him up.
The wind is taken out of Max's sails. Danny tells him that he didn't have the driving lesson - Shane had to go to work. Max offers to take Danny through the driving rules while he knocks up tea for them - he thinks it's his turn.
When Danny and Max have left, Jim is still looking for the yellow folder. He's going on a business trip tomorrow afternoon. Scott is horrified that Jim will miss the farewell dinner for Bess. Jim says he's sure they won't miss his presence.

She tells Des to go out and find a girlfriend, but he says he's happy just hanging out with Daphne. Daphne says that Des needs a romantic interest, not just a friend. Des says he doesn't want to get another room-mate - they can afford the rent with just the two of them. Daphne is pleased.

Basil has chewed up Lucy's sock, much to her dismay.

When Helen and Lucy have gone, Scott asks Bess to let him tell Jim about her illness. She refuses. She says she'd like to talk to him honestly just once though. She says she worked hard to give Jim the things she never had as a child and she loves him. Scott thinks that Bess should tell Jim that she loves him.
The Bank
A new girl called Sarah is starting at the bank and it turns out she knows him. Apparently Sarah is his cousin. Des hasn't seen her in years and asks her not to tell people they are related, in case people think Des is giving her preferential treatment. Sarah doesn't look pleased.

Just then, Edward comes to the door at the Robinsons. He's looking for Bess. He tells Jim that he's very good friends with his mother. He's got some papers for Bess to sign that he forgot about "in the shock".
EDWARD: I wouldn't normally call personally, but I was hoping to see her again...just once more, you understand. I'm goingt o miss her so much.
JIM: Yes, we all will.
EDWARD: Must be a terrible shock to the family. I believe your son Scott's taking the news very hard. Yes, we'll all miss her. I still can't quite believe that all that life and energy is disappearing. I thought she'd live forever.
JIM: I'm sorry?
EDWARD: Her illness. Surely she told you about it? Didn't she?
Jim is very shocked.
The Bank
Sarah tells Des that she is having trouble finding somewhere to live. She's surprised to hear that Des has his own house, and looks disapproving when she hears that Daphne is his lodger.
JULIE: Have you finished? Come on Sarah, please...don't want to get into the habit of gossiping(!)
Julie starts to test Sarah on what she's taught her about bank procedures. She has to serve the next customer. Daphne is next, but Shane is also there and Sarah calls him over first.
Robinsons
Scott is still in a bad mood about Bess. Lucy says it could be puberty(!) Then she asks Helen what puberty is!
LUCY: Do I have it?
HELEN: Not yet.
LUCY: Thank heavens!

The Bank
Marilyn invites Sarah for a coffee, but Des is giving her a lift.
Robinsons
The family are gathered and Lucy gives Bess her card. Julie gives her some flowers. Terry thanks Bess for all her advice with Paul.
Scott and Bess go off to his room for a quiet word. Bess tells Scott that she's failed him. Jim rang to say goodbye, but she couldn't get the words out to tell him she loved him. She tried to ring back, but it was too late. Now she has a regret, and she's never had one in her life before.
In the living room, Jim comes in unexpectedly. He goes through to Scott's bedroom to see Bess. Jim asks Scott for a few moments alone with Bess.
JIM: Why didn't you tell me?
Jim explains that her friend Edward told her this afternoon. He wants to know why Bess didn't tell him she was ill.
Bess tells Jim that Scott loves him a lot. She never meant to fail Jim. Jim asks Bess to stay so they can look after her.
BESS: Let me do it my way. Please, Jim. I'm not dying - I'm living.
Jim says he's terribly sorry for the things he said the other night. They both admit that they've been selfish.
BESS: Jim, I want to tell you something that I shoudl have told you years ago. I just assumed, took it for granted, that you knew.
JIM: What?
BESS: I love you, Jim. I'm sorry I haven't told you before, I just didn't know how.
(they hug tearfully)
JIM: Mum, I love you too.
BESS: Well, we're both OK then, aren't we!
(they continue to hug)
Later in the living room, everyone has a glass of champagne.

Max listens to the water pipes and says, "Zut, alors!"

TERRY: I used to think that once.
Daphne says that she's having dinner with Charles tonight. Terry storms out.

Max has fixed Miss Drew's water pipes and she is very pleased. She has finished Max's remark and he has 55/100. She says she's marked Max hard to teach him a lesson about doing Danny's homework in the future. When Max is leaving, Miss Drew (Kate) tells him that if the pipes haven't banged before the weekend, she will make him a fantastique French meal. Max is chuffed.
KATE: If and when your plumbing works.

KATE: So am I.
MAX: See you.
KATE: Au revoir.
Max goes off with a smile on his face.
Clarkes

Just then, Max smells the dinner and a look of longing comes over his face. Eileen takes Max through the menu and his mouth starts to water.
MAX: You know Eileen, it's a shame you've got noone to appreciate your finer points.

EILEEN: It seems I've underestimated you Mr Ramsay. I thought you were a man of your word.
MAX: Now, hold on...no-one accuses Max Ramsay of going back on his word!
Max has realises he's painted himself into a corner.

EILEEN: Good! Well there we are then! One big happy family!
She starts trying to spoon-feed Danny his bran(!)
No.28
Sarah is up early and makes a lot of noise, waking Daphne with the loud music.
DAPHNE:(spotting toast on the table) Oh! Lovely fresh toast.
SARAH: Actually, Daphne, that's my toast.
DAPHNE: Oh, sorry about that. I thought it was my bread.
SARAH: It's our bread...but it's my toast.
Daphne stands up to Sarah and tells her to stop drinking her orange juice in that case! She explains that in this house it's one for all and all for one.
Des comes out at that moment and Daphne starts to make them some scrambled eggs. He asks Daphne about her date last night but she doesn't tell him who it is. Apparently he's loaded though(!)
Just then, Julie rings Des up to ask him for a lift to work, and one home as well.

A park
Helen and Douglas are having champagne sitting on the grass on a tablecloth. He says he doesn't do it often - not since his wife died. Helen is the first woman he's been out with since he was widowed. He tells her how special she has become to him then kisses her hand.
No.28
Daphne comes in and Terry follows her. She apologises for shouting at her about Charles, but he's not a great guy - he's dangerous. She says he's a sort of a crime-boss - he was the one that broke in and messed up the place: to frighten her. Now he's trying to get even with her. Daphne doesn't believe her when she says Charles is trying to kill her. She thinks Terry is behaving very strangely and advises her to concentrate on her marriage. Terry isn't impressed. She tells Daphne to ask him straight out why he's got it in for Terry, and then look closely at his face. She'll see the truth.
(Later)
Shane comes over and Daphne tells him that she's got a dinner date at home. Shane is rather jealous and wants to know who it is.
Just then Julie comes in, ready to go out (at least I think she is, she appears to be dressed for work though!) Des, Julie, Sarah and Shane head off for town. But Shane turns back to ask Daphne if she's serious about her new date.
SHANE: Whoever he is, Daphne, I hope he's good enough for you.
DAPHNE:(firmly) Goodnight, Shane.
(Later)
Daphne and Charles are having a candlelight dinner. Daphne brings the conversation round to Terry and she says she thinks Terry is being hounded by a nutcase - after all, he left her a wreath on her wedding day. Charles says that maybe it was her husband. Daphne silently picks up on this straightaway - she never told Charles that Terry had a previous husband.
(Later)
Daphne and Charles are having coffee. Charles doesn't really want coffee though, he wants "some fun". He starts insulting Daphne, saying it's years since he's had to pay for sex. She throws him out of the house. Charles says she'll regret her actions - no-one treats him like that.
When Charles has gone, Daphne calls Terry, but there's no-one home.
Robinsons
Daphne rushes in through the back door. Terry happens to be there. Daphne tells Terry that she was right about Charles - he really is a shady character.
Helen comes in (dirty stopout!). Apparently she's been out on Douglas's motorboat and the engine failed. She seems rather drunk and is laughing hysterically to herself.
The Bank, the following morning
Julie and Sarah are telling Larry what a good time they had last night. Des gets a phone call and calls Julie off to a corner.
DES: Julie, there's been some bad news.
JULIE: Bad news?

The Bank, morning
Des goes on to tell Julie that it's Philip Martin who's been in the accident. She is shocked and immediately resolves to go and see him, asking Des to cover for her at the bank.
DES: Julie, hang on. Just take it in before you rush off and do something.
JULIE: No, Des, I'll have to go and see him, I'd never forgive myself.
Des offers to drive her to the hospital - Willowsby General.
Robinsons
Helen is sketching Eileen. They have a cuppa and Eileen moans about how messy Danny Ramsay is. She thinks all the Ramsay men are like children.
Julie comes in through the back door and tells Helen what's happened. Helen manages to get rid of Eileen and then tells Julie that she must be careful - Phil's wife might be at the hospital. Julie doesn't care.
Hospital
Julie is pacing the corridors waiting for news about Phil. There's no news, but it turns out that Loretta was in the accident too - she's also in the accident. They don't know where the children might be.
Ramsays
Eileen tells Max to stop poking about in the fridge - she'll get anything he wants for him. She starts ranting about Danny scibbling "obscenities" on her whiteboard, but it turns out that "I want to drink your blood" is a film that Danny's gone to see. Eileen asks Max if she can invite George over and he isn't very keen.
MAX: Alright, alright! You invite him and I'll go out and drink blood as well(!)
Hospital
Julie is still waiting when Jim arrives. There's no news about whether the children were involved in the accident, and no news about Phil and Loretta either.
The nurse comes up and advises Julie to go home, but she refuses. She's made up her mind.
Clarke's, evening
Eileen is bothering Des by doing some impromptu cleaning and getting in the way of the cricket on TV. She probes Des for details about what's happened to Julie, but he won't give anything away. Eileen is stunned to hear that Sarah is staying with Des but Des reckons that Eileen's squabbles with Sarah's mother are nothing to do with him.
Hospital
The nurses have now changed shifts. The new nurse tells Julie that Phil is improving a bit, and she'll try to get her in to visit him soon - after all, she's waited for such a long time.
Robinsons
Max is moaning to Jim and Helen about Eileen. He asks them if he can stay to dinner to avoid George!
Eileen comes in and drags Max home for dinner. On the way out, Lucy says that she knows Julie is visiting Philip Martin.
HELEN: You have very big ears, young lady.
LUCY: I know. They come in handy when you're small!
Helen tells Jim that she feels a bit sorry for Eileen.
HELEN: She's a very lonely old woman.
LUCY: Danny says she's an old bat.
Helen and Jim try not to laugh.
Ramsays
Max and Eileen are waiting for George to arrive (he's late). When George finally gets there he apologises profusely and tells Eileen a tragic story about a malfunctioning traffic light. Max rolls his eyes.
As they sit down for dinner, Max tries to immerse himself in his newspaper, but George is determined to tell him how overworked Eileen is.
(Later)
George is leaving and kisses Eileen on the cheek. Max is watching a comedy and George gives him a death glare.
When George has gone, Eileen turns on Max for embarrassing and belittling George. Max changes tack and tells Eileen that she's working too hard for them and any time she wants to call it off she can. But Eileen is determined to see out her promise to Max. Then she hands Max her bill so far and he nearly falls over(!)
Robinsons
Jim is sitting up, very worried about Julie. Helen gets up and sits with him. Jim reflects on how much Julie has grown up, but he has to learn to let her go. Jim finally gets up to go to bed, leaving a light on for Julie.
Hospital
Phil is much better and Julie is very relieved. However, the doctor has some more news - Phil's wife Loretta has just died.
DOCTOR: I'm very sorry. How well do you know Mr Martin? Do you feel up to telling him? What I mean is...would you prefer me to do it?
JULIE: Oh...no...I'll tell him.
She slowly enters Phil's room.
Phil is lying on the bed with a tube over his nose. As melancholy music plays, Julie approaches the bed. Phil is awake.
PHIL:(pleased) Thanks for coming.
JULIE: Don't be silly.
PHIL: You didn't have to, you know. Loretta...how is she?
(pause)
JULIE:(faintly) Um... I'm sorry Philip. Loretta died just a little while ago.
Phil takes this in.
PHIL: I think I already knew.
It seems that Debbie and Michael weren't in the car - they're staying with a neighbour called Mrs Finn. But apparently the neighbour is hopeless. Phil doesn't know what will happen now Loretta is gone.
PHIL: They're going to need so much loving and caring. I need your help, Julie.

JULIE: Ssssh.

Des's
Terry has popped round to visit Daphne. She's worried about what Charles will do next. Daphne advises Terry to just give Charles the tape, but Terry reckons it's her only insurance.
Robinsons, the following morning
Julie hasn't slept and is having a quick coffee before going up to pick up Phil's children.
JULIE: Dad...you wouldn't mind if Debbie and Michael came back here, would you?
JIM: No...of course not...why?
JULIE: Well...because last night...Philip's wife died.
HELEN:(coming over) Oh, how sad. Of course, bring them here if that's what you want.
JULIE: Thanks, Gran.
Julie leaves to go and pick up the children.
Ramsays
Eileen is standing over Max as he eats his breakfast. She's still in a white fury towards him for behaving badly towards George. Max can't see what he's done wrong(!) Eileen takes away Max's corn flakes from under his nose in a temper, so he picks up one of the boys bowls and refills it(!)
The Country
Julie has arrived at Phil's neighbour's house. The neighbour, Mrs Finn, isn't in a very good mood at being left with the children all night. Julie explains that she's come to collect the children and quietly explains that Loretta has passed away. The neighbour is very shocked and looks over at Debbie and Michael who are playing happily in some hay.
Julie asks the neighbour to collect the children's clothing while she goes to talk to them.
JULIE:(to Debbie and Michael) Hello. My name's Julie, I'm a friend of your father's.
The Bank
George is suggesting to Eileen that she leaves her job with Max, but Eileen says that she has to see out her month's trial period. Eileen catches sight of Sarah and isn't pleased to be referred to as "Aunty Eileen".
Robinsons
Helen and Terry are discussing Phil's children and in the middle of it, Julie arrives. Debbie and Michael are very subdued so Terry takes them off for a drink in the kitchen.
Helen sits Julie down.
JULIE: Gran, you should have seen their little faces.
Terry comes back and suggests the children stay with her - there isn't much room at the Robinsons. Julie isn't sure but finally agrees.
The Bank
Sarah mentions her row with Daphne to Des. Des immediately takes Daphne's side and says that Sarah must have misunderstood.
SARAH: You men really don't know when women are being bitchy to one another, do you!
DES: Maybe, but that's not the Daphne I know.
Garden of the Robinsons
Julie, Debbie and Michael are playing in the garden. Helen calls Julie into the house - she's had a call from the hospital and Phil has had a bit of a set-back. They didn't say what it was. Julie rushes off to the hospital.

Terry is reading Michael and Debbie a story when Paul comes home. He's not really pleased to see them (not knowing what's happened).
PAUL: Terry, it's not very often we get some time alone together and I thought we could go somewhere...just the two of us.
TERRY: Paul, if you'll let me explain...
PAUL: What did Julie dump them here for? Where's their mother?
DEBBIE: MY MUMMY'S DEAD!
Ramsays
George comes round to see Max. He's still in a temper about the previous evening and tells Max that he's a "coarse and unpleasant" man(!) Max tries not to laugh. George goes on to say that Eileen is a fine woman and Max had better start respecting her!
Hospital
The nurse tells Julie that Phil is still with the doctor. She refuses to leave until she's seen Phil.
Des's
Paul comes in through the back door. He feels bad about putting his foot in it with the children. Paul thinks Terry is getting clucky and it's surprised him a bit. Des admits that he really misses Joan and the kids and thinks about them every day.
Sarah comes in and Des introduces her to Paul.
Ramsays
Eileen stalks in. Max tells her about George's visit. Eileen gets even more angry and stalks out.
Des's
Des, Daphne and Sarah are watching a rather boring documentary about diamonds. Daphne seems quite interested in it though! Des suggests putting on a record and then Eileen comes in. The atmosphere is a bit charged between her and Sarah, so Sarah decides to flounce off to bed.
Des tells Eileen off.
DES: You are judging her completely on your dislike of her mother. I mean, thank God no-one uses the same yardstick on me!
Des tells Eileen that he's going to ask Sarah to stay on and Eileen is not pleased. She storms out.
DES: Well, that's one way to clear a place!
Daphne is a bit alarmed that Des is thinking of asking Sarah to stay on.
